  • As library have become changed. Beyond conventional simple functions such as data storing and recording, the functions of modern public libraries are expended to various directions, for example functions of encouraging residents to utilize information and participate in cultural activities and also a function of life-long education, resulting in playing a role as complex space. As the role of public libraries changes into a complex one, spatial planning reflecting this change is required. Spatial arrangements, furniture arrangements and interior images in 12 public libraries in Seoul were analyzed. As a result of the study, it was found that in spatial arrangements, many public libraries linked spaces by functions. Furniture arrangements have been changing from the closed arrangement to the open arrangement. Interior images were identified as static and simple except digital information space. Accordingly, public libraries have became needed to play a proper role of community facilities for local residents by planning furniture arrangements and conducting interior designs taking characteristics of many different users into consideration.

  • As the cases of merging and cooperation of archives and libraries increase abroad, research and discussions about integration of complex information services among information centers, such as archives, libraries and museums started to emerge. In a similar vein, the need for integrated cultural information centers are suggested in Korea as the museums encounter the need for expansion of contents, and libraries try to diversify their functions, yet regional public archives has not been established. In this context, the concept of 'Larchiveum(libraries + archives + museums)' was proposed as an alternative that integrates and provides various information functions and resources, and research related to this started to emerge. At present, however, the Larchiveum has not been realized, the specific pathway to realize this kind of institution need to be discussed. This study analyzes the functional characteristics and elements of archives, libraries and museums, and based on these, the functional requirements of the larchiveum are drawn, and are reflected on the Larchiveum's functional planning for space planning in this study.

  • This study examined the various functions of public libraries, as well as user satisfaction and needs. We targeted 6 public libraries in the Seoul and Gyunggi area. After 280 library users were surveyed, the collected data were analyzed with an SPSS for Win 14.0 statistics program, where we used frequency, percentage, mean, T-test, One-way ANOVA, and Duncan's test. The major findings were as follows: 1) Half of the users used educational functional space, mainly in the 10-20 age group, who used it for educational purposes as a student or to prepare for getting a job. 2) There were gaps between the furniture arrangement and user preference since most libraries used a rigid system while users preferred a more flexible arrangement. 3) Space by space, public library satisfaction levels differed according to the users' gender and age. Satisfaction of the digital information room scored high, especially for users in their forties. Since public library users are diverse and require various functions, library interiors should be planned accordingly in terms of furniture arrangement and interior design. In particular, there was a gap between satisfaction by age groups, so libraries must account for community needs by considering the age group demographics of their surrounding areas.

  • Discovery is an emerging concept to enhance the search capabilities of library resources with the Next Generation Library Catalog. This paper defined the Discovery feature based on the information search behavior, and then derived the elements that make up its function. After that, the 11 regional representatives libraries' OPACs and 3 Internet bookstores are evaluated and compared against Search & Discovery capabilities. As a result, the Internet bookstores were superior to the libraries' OPACs for all the elements that make up the Discovery functions. This study verified that the public libraries OPACs are still concentrating on known item search, and it is hard for the users to meet a serendipity which is gained through the Discovery functions.

  • The study aims at discussing issues concerning the establishment of the cooperative repository libraries based on regional central libraries which not only support various types of regional libraries and conduct cooperative businesses with them, but also are responsible for collecting and preserving library materials. The study analyzes concepts and types of cooperative repository libraries by literature review and explores cooperative repository libraries in the United States. Futhermore, it conducts a survey and finds that the regional central libraries do not perform their preservation functions, due to the lack of their manpower and budget. As a result, the study provides an establishment plan for cooperative repository libraries which participant libraries hold ownership of transferred materials and regional central libraries own the right of management. Also, it suggests to expand cooperative repository libraries' service coverage from participants to regional communities.
