  • The present work deals with the thermomechanical bending response of functionally graded plates resting on Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundations. Theoretical formulations are based on a recently developed refined trigonometric shear deformation theory (RTSDT). The theory accounts for trigonometric distribution of transverse shear stress, and satisfies the free transverse shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. Unlike the conventional trigonometric shear deformation theory, the present refined trigonometric shear deformation theory contains only four unknowns as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The material properties of the functionally graded plates are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness, according to a simple power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The elastic foundation is modelled as two-parameter Pasternak foundation. The results of the shear deformation theories are compared together. Numerical examples cover the effects of the gradient index, plate aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and elastic foundation parameters on the thermomechanical behavior of functionally graded plates. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and efficient in predicting the thermomechanical bending response of functionally graded plates.

  • A theoretical method is presented to investigate the thermoelastic and dynamic response of functionally graded material (FGM) rectangular plates made up of metal and ceramic. The temperature is assumed to be constant in the plane of the plate and to vary in the thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependant, and vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains is adopted to formulate the theoretical model. The modal analysis technique is used to develop the analytic solutions of the dynamic problem. The effect of material compositions and temperature fields is examined. The present theoretical results are verified by comparing with those from finite element analysis by ANSYS.

  • In this study, additive manufacturing of a functionally graded material (FGM) as an alternative to joining dissimilar metals is investigated using directed energy deposition (DED). FGM consists of five different layers, which are mixtures of austenitic stainless steel (type 316 L) and low-alloy steel (LAS, ferritic steel) at ratios of 100:0 (A layer), 75:25 (B layer), 50:50 (C layer), 25:75 (D layer), and 0:100 (E layer), respectively, in each deposition layer. The FGM samples are successfully fabricated without cracks or delamination using the DED method, and specimens are characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy to monitor their microstructures. In layers C and D of the sample, the tensile strength is determined to be very high owing to the formation of ferrite and martensite structures. However, the elongation is high in layers A and B, which contain a large fraction of austenite.

  • The hygro-thermo-mechanical bending behavior of sigmoid functionally graded material (S-FGM) plate resting on variable two-parameter elastic foundations is discussed using a four-variable refined plate theory. The material characteristics are distributed within the thickness direction according to the two power law variation in terms of volume fractions of the constituents of the material. By employing a four variable refined plate model, both a trigonometric distribution of the transverse shear strains within the thickness and the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate are respected without utilizing shear correction factors. The number of independent variables of the current formulation is four, as against five in other shear deformation models. The governing equations are deduced based on the four-variable refined plate theory incorporating the external load and hygro-thermal influences. The results of this work are compared with those of other shear deformation models. Various numerical examples introducing the influence of power-law index, plate aspect ratio, temperature difference, elastic foundation parameters, and side-to-thickness ratio on the static behavior of S-FGM plates are investigated.

  • Optimal design of functionally graded plates is investigated considering stress and critical temperature. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and varied continuously in the thickness direction. The effective material properties are obtained by applying linear rule of mixtures. The 3-D finite element model is adopted using an 18-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties and temperature field in the thickness direction. For stress analysis, the tensile stress ratio and compressive stress ratio of the structure under mechanical load are investigated. In the thermo-mechanical buckling analysis, temperature at each node is obtained by solving the steady-state heat transfer problem and Newton-Raphson method is used for material nonlinear analysis. Finally, the optimal design of FGM plates is studied for stress reduction and improving thermo-mechanical buckling behavior, simultaneously.

  • Using a combination of nonlocal Eringen as well as classical beam theories, this research explores the thermal buckling of a bidirectional functionally graded nanobeam. The formulations of the presented problem are acquired by means on conserved energy as well as nonlocal theory. The results are obtained via generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). The mechanical properties of the generated material vary in both axial and lateral directions, two-dimensional functionally graded material (2D-FGM). In nanostructures, porosity gaps are seen as a flaw. Finally, the information gained is used to the creation of small-scale sensors, providing an outstanding overview of nanostructure production history.

  • The transient thermo-mechanical behavior of a simply-supported beam made of a functionally graded material (FGM) under the effect of a moving heat source is investigated. The FGM consists of a ceramic part (on the top), which is the hot side of the beam as the heat source motion takes place along this side, and a metal part (in the bottom), which is considered the cold side. Grading is in the transverse direction, with the properties being temperature-dependent. The main steps of the thermo-elastic modeling included deriving the partial differential equations for the temperatures and deflections in time and space, transforming them into ordinary differential equations using Laplace transformation, and finally using the inverse Laplace transformation to find the solutions. The effects of different parameters on the thermo-mechanical behavior of the beam are investigated, such as the convection coefficient and the heat source intensity and speed. The results show that temperatures, and hence the deflections and stresses increase with less heat convection from the beam surface, higher heat source intensity and low speeds.

  • The functionally graded materials (FGM) used in plates contain probably a porosity volume fraction which needs taking into account this aspect of imperfection in the mechanical bahavior of such structures. The present work aims to study the effect of the distribution forms of porosity on the bending of simply supported FG plate reposed on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. A refined theory of shear deformation is developed to study the effect of the distribution shape of porosity on static behavior of FG plates. It was found that the distribution form of porosity significantly influence the mechanical behavior of FG plates, in terms of deflection, normal and shear stress. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is simple and precise for the resolution of the behavior of flexural FGM plates resting on elastic foundations while taking into account the shape of distribution of the porosity.

  • Studying the dynamic behavior of axially moving cylindrical shells in hygro-thermal environments has important theoretical and engineering value for aircraft design. Therefore, in this paper, considering hygro-thermal effect, the nonlinear forced vibration of an axially moving cylindrical shell made of functionally graded materials (FGM) is studied. It is assumed that the material properties vary continuously along the thickness and contain pores. The Donnell thin shell theory is used to derive the motion equations of FGM cylindrical shells with hygro-thermal loads. Under the four sides clamped (CCCC) boundary conditions, the Gallekin method and multi-scale method are used for nonlinear analysis. The effects of power law index, porosity coefficient, temperature rise, moisture concentration, axial velocity, prestress, damping and external excitation amplitude on nonlinear forced vibration are explored through parametric research. It can be found that, the changes in temperature and humidity have a significant effect. Increasing in temperature and humidity will cause the resonance position to shift to the left and increase the resonance amplitude.
