  • Objective: Training-related injuries and attrition put an additional burden on police and military institutions. Preventing and minimizing musculoskeletal injuries is the primary concern of the Abu Dhabi Police. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the correlation between functional movement screen, lower-limb strength, Y-balance test, grip strength and vertical jump and the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries among Abu Dhabi police recruits. Design: Observational analytical study. Methods: An observational study was conducted on 400 male police recruits of Abu Dhabi Police Academy. Physical performance was assessed before the 16-weeks basic police training. Spearman's correlation evaluated the correlation between the performance parameters and the outcome measures and logistic regression predicted the risk factors associated with musculoskeletal injuries. Results: 149 (34.4%) participants reported at least one injury during the basic police training. Comparison between injured and non-injured participants showed significant difference in mean right Y-balance, back-leg-chest dynamometer, and vertical jump (p=0.02, p=0.02, and p=0.04, respectively). Spearman's correlation showed a significant negative correlation between risk of injury and back-leg-chest dynamometer and right Y balance (ρ= -0.11, p=0.03). Logistic regression showed that back-leg-chest dynamometer and right Y balance were significant predictors of injury (p =.036 and p=0.037; Odds ratio=0.96; 95% CI (0.92, 0.99) and Odds ratio=0.99; 95% CI (0.98,0.99). Conclusions: Our findings suggest functional movement screen and grip strength may not independently predict injury rates, balance and lower-limb strength needs to be considered in injury prevention strategies to reduce musculoskeletal injuries.

  • This research is conducted on temporary street furniture, which is one of the significant factors that comprise the street landscape in modem cities. The primary purpose of this research is to present the guidance on direction of planning by examining the design and installation types of construction and screen fences usually established at construction sites for buildings, roads, parks and etc. The results are as follows: 1. The construction and screen fences at construction sites of urban areas used to be a mere tentative facility to prevent noise and safety accidents but have now incremented their roles to serve not only as a functional but also as an aesthetic element with a city view and harmonization with other elements taken into consideration. In particular, it is noticeable that, based on its unique feature of tentativeness, its role has developed to serve as street furniture that adds variability to the modem city. 2. There are two different types of screen fences: blackout type and transparent type. The transparent screen turns out to be used a lot at the construction site of building a skyscraper or differentiated building in downtown city area or in places where there are buildings of similar types and shapes located along the street in the vicinity of the construction site. 3. The actual cases of adopting the tentative construction and screen fences all at the same time as a single unit have been found in historically and culturally significant architectures with the screen design used to demonstrate the view after completion of construction or the characteristics of the architecture.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate correlations between the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), pain, and performance ability in professional fencing players. Methods: Fifty-six athletes participated in this study. The pain group included those who had a score on a pain-related Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of ${\geq}$20 and an Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score ${\geq}$10). In the non-pain group, these scores were: VAS(<20), ODI(<10). The VAS and ODI were used to measure pain throughout the study. Performance ability included motor function of the lower extremities (as assessed by a Modified Functional Index Questionnaire, MFIQ), dynamic balance (Balance system, BS and Posture med, PM), flexor and extensor muscle strength of the lumbar region was recorded as maximal isometric strength. Results: Among athletes who had pain, 5 of 15(33.33%) showed impaired functional movement. Conversely, only 2 of 41(4.88%) of those who had no pain showed such impairment (FMS ${\leq}$14score). The athletes who had pain and who had an FMS score above 14 (10/56; 17.86%) showed a significantly higher score for extensor muscle strength of the lumbar compared with those with pain and an FMS score below 14 (5/56; 8.93%) were significant correlations between the FMS and pain (r=-0.40 to -0.42, p<0.01), the MFIQ (r=-0.33, p<0.05), dynamic balance (r=-0.27 to -0.40, p<0.05-0.01), muscle strength of the lumbar (r=0.27 to 0.29, p<0.05). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the dynamic balance score (${\beta}{\beta}$=-0.41) had slightly more power in predicting FMS score than pain, motor function of lower extremity, or muscle strength. Conclusion: The FMS was significantly associated with values of pain, motor function of the lower extremities, dynamic balance, and muscle strength of the lumbar. However the FMS appears to lack relevance and reasonable evidence to suggest that it is an acceptable measurement tool for functional movement analysis.

  • The oral screen is a functional appliance, suitable for the treatment of developing malocclusion associated with aberrant muscular patterns. The better muscle balance between tongue and the buccinator mechanism can be established, and the reestablishment of normal growth and development can be achieved. The oral screen can be used for the correction of the following conditions : (1) thumbsucking, tongue thrusting and lip biting, (2) mouth breathing, (3) mild distocclusion with premaxillary protrusion, (4) open bites in deciduous and mixed dentition, and (5) incompetent lips. The patient should wear the oral screen every night and also during the day whenever possible. The effects of oral screen can be elevated through lip seal exercise : the lips should be kept in contact all the time to improve the lip seal. In the presented two cases, the patients were considered mouth breathers and to have incompetent lips, and one patient with maxillary incisal protrusion and the other with open bite. They were instructed to wear the oral screen with lip seal exercise. After wearing the appliance for 1 and 2 years respectively, mouth breathing was decreased and lip length and strength were increased, the maxillary incisors were retruded and open bite reduced.

  • The split-screen function on the multipoint control unit(MCU) which is usually using processing method based on pixel domain has many problems for manipulating the video signal in real-time. Although the researches and the developements to cope ith such problems are processing, these have too complex architecture to implement and are limited to method for H.261 video signal. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism for split-screen that can actually apply to ISO/IEC MPEG video standard. The new method that is proposed in this paper do the processes in complete compression domain, thus it is suitable for the application of real-time multipoint multimedia communication service. By simple interpreting and manipulating the MPEG video element stream, the split-screen functional module can be implemented easily and the result of the procedures does not accompany image degradation at all. Finally, the complexity of implementation, the aspect for processing delay and the loss of image quality as compared to that resulting in the case of applying the previous split-screen method has been investigated. And it is confirmed that the proposed mechanism has a significant advantage as a split-screen method.
