  • Objectives This report aimed to investigate the possibility of correcting facial asymmetry using cervical Chuna manipulation treatment and functional cerebrospinal technique and introduce meaningful additional improvement of systemic symptoms of non-surgical Korean medicine treatments through three case studies. Methods Three patients with facial asymmetry were treated using Korean medicine treatments. The effects of the treatments were all measured using photographs, lateral cephalograms, and whole-body radiogram and Likert scale. Results After Korean medicine treatment, there were significant correction effects of asymmetry in photography, cephalography, and whole-body radiogram and meaningful score of Likert scale. Conclusions This study suggested that Korean medicine treatments may be effective in facial asymmetry. Improving muscular asymmetry, including soft tissue asymmetry and functional asymmetry, has meaningful effects on maintaining an overall balance of the body. Facial asymmetry should be treated by making an alignment of the whole body and there should be further well-designed, randomized, and placebo-controlled trials to verify these results.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Korean medicine treatment on facial asymmetric treatment in 5 cases of facial asymmetry correction by non - surgical treatment such as acupucture, chuna treatment, FCST (Functional cerebrospinal technique) and cranial osteopathy. Methods: We analyzed the initial charts of 5 patients who had undergone facial asymmetry in a Korean medicine clinic and measured the position and distance using the photograph, lateral cephalograms, and whole body radiograms. The results were as follows. Results: To quantify both soft and hard tissues to confirm the results of Korean medicine treatment of facial asymmetry, soft tissues quantitatively measure the displacement of the face, the slope of the left and right eyes, and the slope of the lip in order to grasp the positional displacement of the mandible. As a result, on the average, the correction effect as measured by the angle difference between A and C is $1.8{\pm}0.57$, the correction effect as measured by the angle difference between B and C is $1.4{\pm}0.89$, and the angle difference between D and the horizontal plane is $1.9{\pm}0.89$, and the angle difference between E and the horizontal plane is $1.9{\pm}0.89$. The result of reduced angle difference between A and C means that the head position shifted from the center of the body to the unilateral side was shifted to the center. The decrease in the angle difference between B and C means the restoration of the maxillary distortion relative to the mandible. In hard tissues, numerical values were measured based on the skull standard. The average distortion of the skull was $1.9{\pm}0.67$, and the distortion of the lower eye was $1.4{\pm}0.41$. Conclusion: General studies on facial asymmetric treatment are limited to treatments such as surgery and orthodontics. However, this study confirmed the possibility that facial asymmetry could be corrected by Korean medical treatment consisting of reversible non-surgical treatment rather than irreversible treatment such as surgery or orthodontic treatment. In particular, Korean medicine treatment is effective for muscular asymmetry, soft asymmetry, functional asymmetry, etc. The facial asymmetric treatment of Korean medicine is not limited to the face-centered correction, but the asymmetry of the whole body may be corrected as well.

  • Facial symmetry is an important component of attractiveness. However, functional symmetry is favorable to aesthetic symmetry. In addition, fluctuating asymmetry is more natural and common, even if patients find such asymmetry to be noticeable. However, fluctuating asymmetry remains difficult to define. Several studies have shown that a certain level of asymmetry could generate an unfavorable image. A natural profile is favorable to perfect mirror-image profile, and images with canting and differences less than $3^{\circ}-4^{\circ}$ and 3-4 mm, respectively, are generally not recognized as asymmetry. In this study, a questionnaire survey among 434 medical students was used to evaluate photos of Asian women. The students preferred original images over mirror images. Facial asymmetry was noticed when the canting and difference were more than $3^{\circ}$ and 3 mm, respectively. When a certain level of asymmetry is recognizable, correcting it can help to improve social life and human relationships. Prior to any operation, the anatomical component for noticeable asymmetry should be understood, which can be divided into hard tissues and soft tissue. For diagnosis, two-and three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetry and radiometry are used, including photography, laser scanner, cephalometry, and 3D computed tomography.

  • This paper presents 2 clinical cases of facial asymmetry resulted from vertical asymmetry of the maxilla and unilateral hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle. Both patients, a 27 year 4 month old female and a 17 year 1 month old male, had a anterior crossbite with deviated dental midline and a concave profile. Both cases were treated with orthodontic and orthognathic procedure. The following results were obtained; 1. The facial asymmetry was favorably corrected. 2. The concave profile was improved. 3. The anterior crossbite was corrected. 4. The upper and lower dental midlines against the facial midline were corrected. 5. The functional overbite and overjet were established.

  • Facial asymmetry can be most distressing for the young child and parents. It can cause functional problems as a result of malocclusion. Classification of facial asymmetry has not been yet well-organized because of its varieties on etiologic factors, involved sites and clinical expressions. Even though, we don't know its causes definitely. It is generally believed that problems with aberrant pattern of condylar growth are related to facial asymmetry. This is a case report on surgical correction of the patients who had severe facial asymmetry. One patient was diagnosed as condylar hyperplasia and the other was diagnosed as a condylar hypoplasia related to trauma. We performed a simultaneous two-jaw surgery, condylar shaving, inferior border ostectomy of affected mandible in the former case, and a simultaneous two-jaw surgery, reverse-L osteotomy and alloplastic implantation with $Biocoral^{TM}$ in the latter case. The postoperative results of the two cases were excellent functionally and esthetically.

  • Introduction: Condylar fractures are common in the maxillofacial region, comprising 29-40 percent of all mandibular fractures, accounting for about 20-62 percent). Previous studies reported that pediatric condylar fractures can cause disorders in facial growth and function, and the treatment methods have been controversial. Recently, conservative treatment has shown good results in skeletal growth and functional recovery but the conservative treatment of pediatric condylar fractures has shown unpredictable and undesirable results in some cases, such as facial asymmetry and temporomandibular joint disorder. This study examined the specific age groups and specific mandibular condylar fracture type in growing children treated conservatively in the past. Materials and Methods: Eighteen patients (10 men and 8 women) who received conservative treatment for unilateral condylar fractures in Dankook University Dental Hospital between 2000 to 2007 were followed up for a mean period of 7.2 years. Results: In the survey of 18 pediatric patients who received conservative treatment for condylar fractures, the incidence of temporomandibular dysfunction and growth disturbance was 45% and 35%, respectively. Conclusion: In all complications, the symptoms observed most frequently was mouth opening displacement of the mandible exceeding 2 mm. The other complications of functional and growth disturbance included facial asymmetry concentrated along specific condylar types. Complications including facial asymmetry and functional and growth disturbances showed an increasing tendency according to the specific fracture types. Functional and growth disturbances in the undisplaced condylar fracture type showed a lower incidence(P <0.05). Functional and growth disturbances differed according to the fracture type, which has poor relationship with articular fossa and condyle(P <0.05). Functional and growth disturbance in the cases of the high-level condylar fracture type showed a higher incidence(P <0.05). The functional and growth disturbances of the fracture types were similar in the fragment-contact and non-contact groups(P >0.05).

  • An 8-years old boy with facial asymmetry and unilateral posterior crossbite on the left side received orthopedic and orthodontic treatment. During the first phase of treatment, the narrow maxillary arch was expanded using an acrylic plate. Then, the acrylic plate was used as a bite block with occlusal indentations from the construction bite that was obtained with the incisors in a coincident dental midline. After the position of the mandible was stabilized, the second phase of orthodontic treatment was initiated using fixed appliances for detailing of the occlusion. Skeletal symmetry, ideal occlusion, and coincident dental midlines were thus achieved. Functionally, occlusal force balance and masticatory muscle activity were improved, and the chewing patterns were normalized.
