A novel L-ascorbic acid and peptide conjugate with increased stability and collagen biosynthesis

  • L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and peptide are both useful compounds for collagen biosynthesis in cosmeceuticals (cosmetic and pharmaceutical fields). The instability of these compounds, however, limit their application in these industries. In this report, we describe the development of a novel compound, Stabilized Ascorbyl Pentapeptide (SAP), which physically is much more stable than L-ascorbic acid in water. The inhibitory effects of this SAP compound on tyrosinase and melanin synthesis is comparable to that of L-ascorbic acid. Importantly, the SAP compound displays no cytotoxicity at a high concentration (5 mM). The ability of SAP to promote collagen biosynthesis is greater than that of L-ascorbic acid or the KTTKS peptide alone. Considering the in vitro stability and functional effects, our data strongly suggest that the SAP compound is a good candidate not only as a cosmetic ingredient, but also as a wound healing agent.

누에실샘 미세분말을 이용한 기능성 색조용 파우더 개발 (Development of functional cosmetic powder using silkgland powder of silkworm)

  • In this study, silkgland powder of silkworm were investigated to see possibility for cosmetic powder materials. To test possibility as a baby powder cosmetics, total content rate of amino acids, DPPH free radical scavenging assay, MTT assay, and clinical trial were done. According to the result of the analysis of the amino acids of silkgland powder, serin (26.77%) content was the highest and asparatic acid (15.47%), and glycine (9.62%) were followed. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of silkgland powder was lower than vitamin C by 82.3% and 97%, respectively, which is relatively good. And the moisture and elasticity effect were increased in silkgland powder compared to control cosmetics by 210% and 185%, relatively. Thus, these results suggest that silkgland powder of silkworm may have beneficial properties as a material for cosmeceuticals.

  • Tumors of the deep lobe of parotid gland are rare. These benign tumors have usually been treated by total parotidectomy, which has functional and esthetic side effects. Recently, there has been a trend for operations of parotid gland benign tumors to be less radical and selective deep lobe parotidectomy has been introduced. This technique preserves the superficial lobe and facial nerve when tumor is located in the deep lobe. Selective deep lobe parotidectomy preserves parotid salivary function, minimizes the incidence of facial nerve damage and gustatory sweating (Frey's syndrome) and improves cosmetic outcome. We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the deep lobe that was successfully treated by selective deep lobe parotidectomy with satisfactory result.

동측 역행성 유경 피판술을 이용한 무지의 재건 - 1예 보고 - (Homodigital Reverse Pedicle Island Flap for Reconstruction of the Great Toe - A Case Report -)

  • Reconstruction of the distal portion of the great toe has always represented a difficult problem to surgeons. There are many methods of flap reconstruction described for foot defects, but none for tip of the great toe. We report a case of reconstruction of the great toe using a homodigital reverse pedicle island flap method. A 25-year-old man had a crushing injury at the distal phalanx of the left great toe. A homodigital reverse pedicle island flap was raised from the dorso-medial aspect of the proximal phalanx of the great toe based on the distal dorsal arcade. The flap covered the exposed distal phalanx and stump was closed without shortening. He made an uncomplicated recovery and when seen 6 months later he had a good cosmetic and functional result. A homodigital reverse pedicle island flap is described for the reconstruction of the distal part of the great toe. It involves only a single stage procedure with minimal donor site morbidity and provides a good cosmetic results.

Traumatic cerebrospinal fluid leakage following septorhinoplasty

  • Septoplasty/septorhinoplasty is a common ear, nose and throat procedure offered for those patients with deviated septum who are suffering from nasal obstruction and functional or cosmetic problems. Although it is a basic and simple procedure, it could lead to catastrophic complications including major skull base injuries which result in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. We describe two different cases of traumatic CSF leaks following septoplasty/septorhinoplasty at two different sites. The first patient suffered a CSF leak following septoplasty and presented to Alexandria University Hospital. The leak was still active at presentation and identified as coming from a defect in the roof of the sphenoid sinus and was repaired surgically. The second patient presented 4 days after her cosmetic septorhinoplasty with a CSF leak and significant pneumocephalus. She was managed conservatively. Understanding the anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and implementing proper surgical techniques are crucial in preventing intracranial complications when performing either septoplasty or septorhinoplasty. A good quality computed tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses is a valuable investigation to avoid major complications especially CSF leaks following either procedure.

포도가공 부산물로부터 화장품용 항산화물질의 추출 및 분리 (Extraction and Isolation of Antioxidant Fraction from Waste of Grape Products for Cosmetic Application)

  • 본 연구는 포도가공부산물로부터 유용성분을 추출하여 자원의 활용과 환경오염을 줄이고, 공정을 간결하게 하여 실제산업현장에서 이용할 수 있는 공정의 개발을 목적으로 하였다. 포도가공 부산물을 포도과피와 포도씨로 나누어 과피에서는 anthocyanin을 씨에서는 oligomeric proanthocyanidin (OPC)를 주 대상물질로 하여 추출하기 위한 공정을 개발하였다. 추출된 항산화물질은 HPLC를 이용하여 정량하였으며, 이들의 효능은 DPPH법, SOD법을 이용하여 대조군들과의 비교를 통하여 확인하였다. 두 방법 모두 포도씨 추출물의 효능이 포도과피 추출물보다 뛰어난 항산화도를 보였다. 이렇게 생산된 추출물을 이용하여 multiple lamella emulsion의 화장품 제형을 개발하였고 이 제형의 안전성과 안정성을 실험적으로 확인하였다.

신규 자외선차단제인 Methoxycinnamidopropyl Polysilsesquioxane의 광안정성 평가 (Photostability Evaluation of a New Sunscreen Agent, Methoxycinnamidopropyl Polysilsesquioxane)

  • 신규 자외선차단제로 개발된 methoxycinnamidopropyl polysilsesquioxane은 유기-무기 혼성 구조의 고분자 입자로, 본 연구진은 이미 신규 자외선차단제에 대한 제조방법, 물리적 특성 및 자외선차단 효과에 대해 보고한 바 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 대표적인 유기 자외선차단제인 ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC)와 동일한 기능기를 갖는 methoxycinnamidopropyl polysilsesquioxane의 광화학적 특성과 자외선에 대한 광안정성을 평가하였다. 또한, 자외선 흡광도와 형광의 상관관계를 이용하여, 광안정성을 향상시킬 수 있는 광안정화제에 대하여 연구하였다. Methoxycinnamidopropyl polysilsesquioxane은 광화학적으로 EHMC와 유사한 특성을 보였으며, octocrylene, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene 및 bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine이 우수한 광안정화제로 확인되었다.

  • The eyelids perform many complex functions and are esthetically important, since eye is focal point of face. Tumor extirpation or trauma can lead to full-thickness eyelid defect, which Should be reconstructed as soon as possible There are a number of operation methods for lower lid reconstruction, and among them, Hughes procedure is a time-honored method. Its advantages are good cosmetic result and conjunctival repair by using eyelid structures to rebuild eyelid structures. However, this is a two-staged procedure in which the vision of the affected eye is obstructed during the interval between the operations. We experienced a case of trauma-induced full-thickness lower lid defect extending over one-third of lid length treated by Hughes method. The cosmetic and functional result was good and there was no donor site morbidity, and now we report this case with review of literatures.

어리연꽃으로부터 분리한 Sweroside의 항노화 효과 (Anti-aging Effects of Sweroside Isolated from Nymphoides indica)

  • 본 연구에서는 신규 기능성 화장품 소재 개발을 위해 어리연꽃으로부터 분리한 sweroside를 이용하여 섬유아세포 내에서의 항노화 효과를 확인하였다. CCD-986sk 세포를 이용하여 sweroside의 항노화 효과를 측정한 결과, UVB에 의해 증가된 ROS의 발현을 억제하였으며, pro-collagen의 발현을 증가시키며 MMP-1의 발현을 억제하는 것으로 확인되었다. 이 결과를 종합해보면, sweroside는 화장품 분야에서 신규 항노화 기능성 소재로서의 활용 가능성이 있는 것으로 판단된다.

광용혈에 대한 Ketocarotenoids의 현저한 세포 보호작용에 관한 연구

  • ${\beta}$-Carotene has been known as an effective quenching agent of singlet oxygen and the carotenoid pigments in general are expected to protect cells against photosensitized oxidations. We are determined the quenching rate constants of several Ketocarotenoids including capsanthin, capsanthin diester, astaxanthin and fucoxanthin, and the relative quenching actiyities against singlet oxygen were compared with those of ${\beta}$-carotene and reported carotenoids. Nevertheless the ketocarotenoids exhibited lower quenching rate constants than ${\beta}$-carotene, they showed more pronounced protective activitives than ${\beta}$-carotene against photohemlysis induced by singlet oxygen. Among the ketocarotenoids investigated, fucoxanthin indicated a significant protective activity for the cell. The results suggested that. 1) 1O2 may be alikely initiator of photohemolysis, but this reaction is followed by slow dark reactions involving secondary reactive species. 2) For protection of RBC against photodynamic action with carotenoids, carotenoids having functional groups such as -C=0 and -OH groups are most efficient. This suggests that partition of carotenoids between the buck and the mombrane and/or their specific binding to membrane proteins are more critical for the photo-protection by carotenoids than is a diffusional quenching of 1O2.
