  • Applying design methodology, new type friction tester has been developed. Functional analysis has been executed and functional structure were constructed during the conceptual design. Optimal solution has been selected and a proto model has been manufactured according to the conceptual design. Using the tester developed in the laboratory, frictional characteristics of natural rubbers have been experimentally analyzed. Friction coefficient has been calculated from the measured normal force and friction force under various speeds, loads, and temperatures. The corelations between the various operating conditions and friction coefficients have been verified. Especially, drag friction due to the visco-elastic behavior of the rubber has been observed in this analysis.

  • In this study, an alternative solution procedure presented by using variational methods for analysis of shear deformable functionally graded material (FGM) beams with mixed formulation. By using the advantages of $G{\hat{a}}teaux$ differential approaches, a refined complex general functional and boundary conditions which comprises seven independent variables such as displacement, rotation, bending moment and higher-order bending moment, shear force and higher-order shear force, is derived for general thick-thin FGM beams via shear deformation beam theories. The mixed-finite element method (FEM) is employed to obtain a beam element which have a 2-nodes and total fourteen degrees-of-freedoms. A computer program is written to execute the analyses for the present study. The numerical results of analyses obtained for different boundary conditions are presented and compared with results available in the literature.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the functional ingredients of Perilla Frutescens L. Britt extracts and to confirm the possibility of producing PVA nanofibers using extracts. Distilled water, 3% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and ethanol were used as extraction solvents. The electrospinning was carried out at a PVA concentration of 12%, an applied voltage of 10 kV and a tip to collector distance of 15cm. The contents of volatile substances, essential oils, total polyphenols and flavonoids of the extracts were measured to examine the constituents of functional materials. Flavor components and esters were identified in 3% sodium hydroxide and ethanol extracts. The content of polyphenols and flavonoids in ethanol extracts was higher than that of medicinal plants. 1wt.% of Tween 20 was added to disperse the essential oil components of the ethanol extract. Addition of a dispersant made it possible to produce a homogeneous mixture by having some compatibility with the ethanol extracts and the PVA molecule. When the concentration of the ethanol extract was 0.25 and 0.5wt%, relatively uniform PVA nanofiber having an average diameter of 350 to 365nm could be produced. The results of FT-IR, XRD and DSC analysis confirmed that Perilla Frutescens L. Britt ethanol extract was well mixed with PVA molecules and was electrospun.

  • A numerical method for the solution of one-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem is established and its performance is demonstrated with computational results. The present work introduces the maximum entropy method in order to build a robust formulation of the inverse problem. The maximum entropy method finds the solution that maximizes the entropy functional under given temperature measurement. The philosophy of the method is to seek the most likely inverse solution. The maximum entropy method converts the inverse problem to a non-linear constrained optimization problem of which constraint is the statistical consistency between the measured temperature and the estimated temperature. The successive quadratic programming facilitates the maximum entropy estimation. The gradient required fur the optimization procedure is provided by solving the adjoint problem. The characteristic feature of the maximum entropy method is discussed with the illustrated results. The presented results show considerable resolution enhancement and bias reduction in comparison with the conventional methods.

  • Investigation of the protein-protein interaction mode at atomic resolution is essential for understanding on the underlying functional mechanisms of proteins as well as for discovering druggable compounds blocking deleteriou interprotein interactions. Solution NMR spectroscopy provides accurate and precise information on intermolecular interactions even for weak and transient interactions, and it is also markedly useful for examining the change in the conformation and dynamics of target proteins upon binding events. In this mini-review, we comprehensively describe three unique and powerful methods of solution NMR spectroscopy, paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE), pseudo-contact shift (PCS), and residual dipolar coupling (RDC), for the study on protein-protein interactions.

  • In this paper, we study a linear system of homogeneous commensurate /incommensurate fractional-order differential equations by developing a new semi-analytical scheme. In particular, by decoupling the system into two fractional-order differential equations, so that the first equation of order (δ + γ), while the second equation depends on the solution for the first equation, we have solved the under consideration system, where 0 < δ, γ ≤ 1. With the help of using the Adomian decomposition method (ADM), we obtain the general solution. The efficiency of this method is verified by solving several numerical examples.

  • In order to increase the critical speed of rotating disks of which functional material could not be changed such as in optical and magnetic data storage disks, a new disk with a rim reinforced by composite material is proposed and its concept is verified by numerical analysis. Stress distributions are found for the rotating disk composed of two annular disks of which materials are isotropic inside and orthotropic outside. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed. For the solution of lateral vibration, a rotational symmertry condition is applied along circumferential direction and a finite element interpolation with Hermite polynomial is performed along the radial direction to obtain a proper solution. According to the results, reinforcing a disk at rim makes critical speeds drastically increased, and induces a buckling phenomenon in mode (0,0) which occurs over the lowest critical speed.

  • To assess the electrostatic interaction of surfaces at the triple contact line, the electrostatic field is analyzed by using the finite element method. The Helmholtz free energy is used as a functional which should be minimized under an equilibrium condition. The numerical results are compared with the nonlinear analytical solution for a two-dimensional charged interface and linear solution for a wedge shaped geometry, which shows fairly good agreement. The method is applied to the analysis of electrostatic influence on the contact angle on a charged substrate. The excess free energy found to increase drastically as the contact angle approaches to zero. This excess free energy Plays an opposite role to the Primary electrocapillary effect, as the contact angle gets smaller. This enables an alternative explanation for the contact-angle saturation phenomenon occurring in electrical control of surface tension and contact angle.

  • In this paper, we introduce and study a new class of random generalized nonlinear implicit variational-like inclusion with random fuzzy mappings in a real separable Hilbert space and give its fixed point formulation. Using the fixed point formulation and the proximal mapping technique for strongly maximal monotone mapping, we suggest and analyze a random iterative scheme for finding the approximate solution of this class of inclusion. Further, we prove the existence of solution and discuss the convergence analysis of iterative scheme of this class of inclusion. Our results in this paper improve and generalize several known results in the literature.

  • The adsorption and reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by surface modified activated carbon (AC) in an aqueous solution was studied. The effects of surface modifications on the properties of the carbons were investigated by the analysis of specific surface area, carbon surface pH, acid/base surface values and functional groups. In order to understand the Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction ratio from Cr(VI) to Cr(III), the Cr adsorption capacity of AC was also measured and discussed by using inductively coupled plasma and UV spectrophotometer. The modifications bring about substantial variation in the chemical properties whereas the physical properties such as specific surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution nearly were not changed. Total Cr adsorption efficiency of as-received activated carbon (R-AC) and nitric acid treated activated carbon (N1-AC and N2-AC) were recorded on 98.2, 99.7 and 100%. Cr(III) reduction efficiency of R-AC increased largely from 0.4% to 28.3% compared to N1-AC and N2-AC.
