This computational investigation of micro-sized particle dispersion concerns the fume particle contamination over target surface in high-precision laser line machining process of semiconductor and display device materials. Employing the random sampling based on probabilistic fume particle generation distributions, the effects of sphericity for nonspherical fume particles are analyzed for the fume particle dispersion and contamination near the laser machining line. The drag coefficient correlation for nonspherical particles in a low Reynolds number regime is selected and utilized for particle trajectory simulations after drag model validation. When compared to the corresponding results by the assumption of spherical fume particles, the sphericity of nonspherical fume particles show much less dispersion and contamination characteristics and it also significantly affects the particle removal rate in a suction air flow patterns.

The concentration of welding fume was measured by 221 welders themselves in chassis frame workplace of the manufactory from February, 1, 1996 to May, 31, 1997. Welding parameters were the welding current and the distance between helmet and arc. Those two optimum conditions were proposed by excess probability analysis using logistic regression, so the best position in the workplace was proposed considering two factors to control the welding fume. The results are as followings; 1) The excess proability of welding fume TLV was over 99% in above 260 Amperes of welding current and also in below 30cm of distanced between helmet and arc. 2) The equation from logistic regression analysis using SPSS/PC+5.02 had the welding current as a independent variable and the excess of welding fume TLV as a dependent variable (p<0.05). Logit(welding fume TLV) = 0.1296 ${\times}$ wlding currnet - 28.8750 3) The equation from logistic regression analysis using SPSS/PC+5.02 had the distance between helmet and arc as a independent variable and the excess of welding fume threshold limit value a, a dependent variable (p<0.05). Logit (welding fume TLV) = -0.6809 ${\times}$ distance between helmet and arc +25.1665 4) Considering both cases or 2) and 3). the result equation is following. (p<0.05). Logit (welding fume TLV) = 0.1346 ${\times}$ welding current -0.3859 ${\times}$ distance between helmet and arc -15.7382 5) The excess probability of welding fume threshold limit value was 100% in above 240 Ampere of welding current. Thus, below 220 Ampere can be suggested to reduce the 40% number of welders who have a excess welding fume threshold limit value. 6) The excess probability of welding fume TLV was 100% in below 34cm of distance between helmet and arc. Thus, over 38cm can be suggested to reduce the 33% number of welders who have a excess welding fume TLV. 7) Considering both 5) and 6) cases, first of all, the best welding current can be 200 Ampere to have a below 15% of welding fume excess probability for the welders who works in distance of 34-37cm. Secondly, to have a below 30% excess probability of welding fume TLV, the working distance must be over 38cm in 220 Ampere and 32cm in 200 Ampere. 8) To reduce the average exposure concentration of welding fume ($8.21{\pm}5.83mg/m^3$), the movable local exhaust system equipped with flexible hoods can be used.

Silica fume is a common addition to high performance concrete mix designs. The use of silica fume in concrete leads to increased water demand. For this reason, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) allows only a 72-hour continuous moist cure process for concrete containing silica fume. Accelerated curing has been shown to be effective in producing high-performance characteristics at early ages in silica-fume concrete. However, the heat greatly increases the moisture loss from exposed surfaces, which may cause shrinkage problems. An experimental study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of steam curing of FDOT concrete with silica fume in order to reduce precast turnaround time. Various steam curing durations were utilized with full-scale precast prestressed pile specimens. The concrete compressive strength and shrinkage were determined for various durations of steam curing. Results indicate that steam cured silica fume concrete met all FDOT requirements for the 12, 18 and 24 hours of curing periods. No shrinkage cracking was observed in any samples up to one year age. It was recommended that FDOT allow the 12 hour steam curing for concrete with silica fume.
Silica fume has long been used as a mineral admixture to improve the durability and produce high strength and high performance concrete. And in marine and coastal environments, penetration of chloride ions is one of the main mechanisms causing concrete reinforcement corrosion. In this paper, we proposed a numerical procedure to predict the chloride diffusion in a hydrating silica fume blended concrete. This numerical procedure includes two parts: a hydration model and a chloride diffusion model. The hydration model starts with mix proportions of silica fume blended concrete and considers Portland cement hydration and silica fume reaction respectively. By using the hydration model, the evolution of properties of silica fume blended concrete is predicted as a function of curing age and these properties are adopted as input parameters for the chloride penetration model. Furthermore, based on the modeling of physicochemical processes of diffusion of chloride ion into concrete, the chloride distribution in silica fume blended concrete is evaluated. The prediction results agree well with experiment results of chloride ion concentrations in the hydrating concrete incorporating silica fume.

This study investigates the effect of the pre-mix cement to the physical properties of the concrete according to the various combinations of the binders and the silica fume types. The results are summarized as following. For the properties of the fresh, the fluidity in the case that OPC+cilica fume-blast-furnace slag is appropriate compared to OPC+cilica fume+fly ash. Expecially, it is favorable when pre-mix is used. The fluidity time of the A, B depending on silica fume types is favorable, but it is decreased on C. The air content depending on silica fume types is low when the fly ash is used. Specially, the air content in the case that pre-mix is used is low caused by the dispersion of the silica fume. For the properties of the hardened concrete, the compressive and flexible strength when the blast-furnace slag is pre-mixed are high, and they exceed OPC. The strength depending on the silica fume types is high on B, and the strength of the others is similar.

This experimental study investigated the effect of silica fume mixed in concrete blocks on laser-induced explosion behavior. We used a 5.3 kW fiber laser as a thermal source to induce explosive spalling on a concrete surface blended with and without silica fume. An analytical approach based on the difference in the removal rate and thermal behavior was used to determine the effect of silica fume on laser-induced explosive spalling. A scanner was employed to calculate the laser-scabbled volume of the concrete surface to derive the removal rate. The removal rate of the concrete mixed with silica fume was higher than that of without silica fume. Thermal images acquired during scabbling were used to qualitatively analyze the thermal response of laser-induced explosive spalling on the concrete surface. At the early stage of laser heating, an uneven spatial distribution of surface temperature appeared on the concrete blended with silica fume because of frequent explosive spalling within a small area. By contrast, the spalling frequency was relatively lower in laser-heated concrete without silica fume. Furthermore, we observed that a larger area was removed via a single explosive spalling event owing to its high porosity.

The purpose of this study was to investigate for filtration efficiency of several dust masks, comparing with filtration efficiency certified by KOSHA(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency), and to require of the right use of protective respirators. Using a welding fume generator and chamber, several dust masks, which were widely used in the workplaces in korea, were tested for their filtering efficiency for stainless steel arc welding fume. The filtration efficiency testing system consisted of a welding fume generator, a chamber and a filtration unit. The filtration unit was made of a mask which was inserted into the sampling cassette and another sampling cassette, which contained mixed cellulose ester filter paper. These two cassettes were connected with tubing. Stainless steel arc welding fume generator was delivered into an chamber. The welding fume in the chamber was passed into the filtration unit with flow rate of 30 liter/min. The welding fume filtration efficiency was evaluated by gravimetric measurement. Metal concentrations in the welding fume before and after filtration were measured with inductive coupling plasma analyzer. Following results were obtained: Filtration efficiency of welding fume for common hygienic mask was 63.82% and the average efficiencies for A, B, C, D, E, F and G masks were 94.62%, 96.58%, 83.20%, 82.76%, 77.25%, 86.55% and 93.22%, respectively. Our results indicate that dust masks used widely in the welding workplaces in korea are not proper for protecting worker's health and then the use of fume mask should be required.

Effect of silica fume on fresh properties, compressive strength at 28 days and fracture behavior of fly ash concrete composite were studied in this paper. Test results indicated that the fluidity and flowability of fly ash concrete composites decreased and fly ash concrete composite are more cohesive and appear to be sticky with the addition of silica fume. Addition of silica fume was very effective in improving the compressive strength at 28 days of fly ash concrete composite, and the compressive strength of fly ash concrete composite has a trend of increase with the increase of silica fume content. Results also indicated that all the fracture parameters of effective crack length, fracture toughness, fracture energy, the critical crack opening displacement and the maximum crack opening displacement of fly ash concrete composite decreased with the addition of silica fume. When the content of silica fume increased from 3% to 12%, these fracture parameters decreased gradually with the increase of silica fume content. Furthermore, silica fume had great effect on the relational curves of the three-point bending beam specimen. As the silica fume content increased from 3% to 12%, the areas surrounded by the three relational curves and the axes were becoming smaller and smaller, which indicated that the capability of concrete composite containing fly ash to resist crack propagation was becoming weaker and weaker.

This paper deals with the effects of silica fume content and polymer-binder ratio on the properties of ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortar using silica fume and ethylene-vinyl acetate redispersible polymer powder instead of styrene-butadiene rubber latex to shorten the hardening time. The ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortar was prepared with various silica fume contents and polymer-binder ratios, and tested flexural strength, compressive strength, water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration depth. As results, the flexural, compressive and adhesion strengths of the ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortar tended to increase as increasing polymer-binder ratio, and reached the maximums at 4 % of silica fume content. The water absorption, carbonation and chloride ion penetration resistance were improved according to silica fume content and polymer-binder ratio.
