The combination of ultrasound echo images with digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) method has resulted in a two-dimensional, two-component velocity field measurement technique appropriate for opaque flow conditions including blood flow in clinical applications. Advanced PIV processing algorithms including an iterative scheme and window of offsetting were used to increase spatial resolution. The optimum concentration of the ultrasound contrast agent used for seeding was explored. Velocity validation tests in fully developed laminar pipe flow and pulsatile flow showed good agreement with both optical PIV measurements and the known analytic solution. These studies indicate that echo PIV is a promising technique for the non-invasive measurement of velocity profiles and shear stress.
The present study concerns a computational study of fully developed laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid through an eccentric annulus with a combined bulk axial flow and inner cylinder rotation. This study considers the identical flow geometry as in the calculation of Escudier et $al.^{(3)}$ An unexpected feature of the calculations for eccentricity ${\varepsilon}$)0.7 is the appearance of a second peak in the axial velocity, located in the narrowing gap. The distribution of the axial component of the surface shear stress has a maximum in the narrowing gap and a minimum in the widening gap.
A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

The present work investigates the heat transfer characteristics for laminar fully developed forced convection in an internally finned tube with axially uniform heat flux and peripherally uniform temperature through analytical models of convection in a porous medium. Using the Brinkman-extended Darcy flow model and the two equation model fur heat transfer, analytical solutions fur fluid flow and heat transfer are obtained and compared with the exact solution for fluid flow and the numerical solutions for conjugate heat transfer to validate the porous medium approach. Using the analytical solutions, parameters of engineering importance are identified and their effects on fluid flow and heat transfer are studied. Also, the expression fur total thermal resistance is derived from the analytical solutions and minimized in order to optimize the thermal performance of the internally finned tubes.

The purpose of this work is to Investigate the pressure drop and the heat transfer characteristics in the channel of plate heat exchanger with crossed-discrete ribs. The flow is assumed to be three-dimensional, laminar and periodically fully developed. Computations have been carried out for angles of attack from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ and ratios of rib height from 0.15 to 0.46 for various values of Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The heat transfer was improved by inclined ribs generating helical vortices and secondary flows. The results show that the pressure drop has a maximum value at $70^{\circ}$ and the heat transfer has a maximum value at $45^{\circ}$. As the rib height increases, the pressure drop and the heat transfer increase quadratically, and the increasing rate of pressure drop is higher than that of the heat transfer. As Reynolds number increases, the pressure drop increases in proportion to the square of Reynolds number and the heat transfer increases linearly.

This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of $0.1\sim0.4%$ aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC), respectively at inner cylinder rotational speed of $0\sim600rpm$. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The present results show that the skin-friction coefficients have the significant relation with the Rossby numbers, only for laminar regime. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficients due to the rotation in uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decrease as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of taylor vortices.
An efficient correction storage scheme on a structured grid is applied to a sequence of approximate Jacobian systems arising at each time step from a linearization of the discrete nonlenear system of equations, obtained by the implicit time discretization of the conservation laws for unsteady fluid flows. The contribution of freezing the Jacobian matrix to computing costs is investigated within the correction storage scheme. The performance of the procedure is exhibited by measuring CPU time required to obtain a fully developed laminar vortex shedding flow past a circular cylinder, and is compared with that of a collective iterative method on a single grid. In addition, some computed results of the flow are presented in terms of some functionals along with measured data. The computational test shows that the computing costs may be saved in favor of the correction storage scheme with the frozen Jacobian matrix, to a great extent.

A three dimensional numerical simulation of laminar flow and heat transfer in fully developed curved pipe flow has been performed to study the effects of Dean number and pipe curvature on the flow and temperature fields under the thermal boundary condition of axially uniform wall heat flux. The Reynolds number under consideration ranges from 100 to 4000, and the Prandtl number is 0.71. The curvature ratios are 0.01, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1. The axial velocity and temperature profiles and the local Nusselt number obtained from the present study are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. To show the effects of pipe curvature on the flow and heat transfer, the resistance coefficients and heat transfer coefficients are computed and compared with the results of the previous theoretical and experimental studies. The averaged Nusselt number is correlated with Dean and Prandtl numbers. Furthermore, the critical Reynolds number for transition to turbulent flow is observed to depend upon the curvature ratio.
This experimental study concerns the characteristics of vortex flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one is rotating. Pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for fully developed flows of water and of 0.4% aqueous solution of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), respectively, when the inner cylinder rotates at the speed of 0~600 rpm. Also, the visualization of vortex flows has been performed to observe the unstable waves. The results of present study reveal the relation of the bulk flow Reynolds number Re and Rossby number Ro with respect to the skin friction coefficients. In somehow, they show the existence of flow instability mechanism. The effect of rotation on the skin friction coefficient is significantly dependent on the flow regime. The change of skin friction coefficient corresponding to the variation of rotating speed is large for the laminar flow regime, whereas it becomes smaller as Re increases for the transitional flow regime and. then, it gradually approach to zero for the turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical (bulk flow) Reynolds number Re$\_$c/ decreases as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of the inner cylinder promotes the onset of transition due to the excitation of Taylor vortices.
