Wave propagation in a three-dimensional (3D) fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) is studied based on velocity potential theory. The governing Laplace equation with fully nonlinear boundary conditions on the moving free surface is solved using the indirect desingularized boundary integral equation method (DBIEM). The fourth-order predictor-corrector Adams-Bashforth-Moulton scheme (ABM4) and mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) method are used for the time-stepping integration of the free surface boundary conditions. A smoothing algorithm, B-spline, is applied to eliminate the possible saw-tooth instabilities. The artificial wave speed employed in MTF (multi-transmitting formula) approach is investigated for fully nonlinear wave problem. The numerical results from incorporating the damping zone (DZ), MTF and MTF coupled DZ (MTF+DZ) methods as radiation condition are compared with analytical solution. An effective MTF+DZ method is finally adopted to simulate the 3D linear wave, second-order wave and irregular wave propagation. It is shown that the MTF+DZ method can be used for simulating fully nonlinear wave propagation very efficiently.
A long wave induced by a Gaussian-shape submarine landslide is simulated by a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The NWT is based on the boundary element method and the mixed Eulerian/Lagrangian approach. Using the NWT, physical characteristics of land-slide tsunami, including wave generation, propagation, particle kinematics, hydrodynamic pressure, run-up and depression, are simulated for the early stage of long wave generation and propagation. Various sliding mass heights are applied to the developed model for a systematic sensitivity analysis. In particular, the fully nonlinear NWT results are compared with linear results (exact body-boundary conditions with linear free-surface conditions) to identify the nonlinear effects in the respective cases.

Based on the potential flow theory, a fully nonlinear numerical procedure is developed with boundary element method to analyze the interaction between a fixed semi-submersible platform and incident waves in open water. The incident wave is separated from the scattered wave under fully nonlinear boundary conditions. The mixed Euler-Lagrangian method is used to capture the position of the disturbed wave surface in local coordinate systems. The wave forces exerted on an inverted conical frustum are used to ensure the accuracy of the present method and good agreements with published results are obtained. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the semi-submersible platform interacting with regular waves are analyzed. Pressure distribution with time and space, tension and compression of the platform under wave action are investigated. 3D behaviors of wave run-ups are predicted. Strong nonlinear phenomena such as wave upwelling and wave interference are observed and analyzed.
Based on the fully nonlinear velocity potential theory, the liquid sloshing in a three dimensional tank under random excitation is studied. A smoothing scheme, B-spline curve, is applied to both the longitudinal and transverse directions of the tank to eliminate the possible saw-tooth instabilities. When the tank is undergoing one dimensional regular motion of small amplitude, the calculated results are found to be in very good agreement with linear analytical solution. In the simulation, the normal standing waves, travelling waves and bores are observed. The extensive calculation has been made for the tank undergoing specified random oscillation. The nonlinear effect of random sloshing wave is studied and the effect of peak frequency used for the generation of random oscillation is investigated. It is found that, even as the peak value of spectrum for oscillation becomes smaller, the maximum wave elevation on the side wall becomes bigger when the peak frequency is closer to the natural frequency.
Considering that different boundary conditions can have an important impact on structural vibration characteristics. In this paper, the nonlinear forced vibration behavior of functionally graded material (FGM) doubly curved shells with initial geometric imperfections under different boundary conditions is studied. Considering initial geometric imperfections and von Karman geometric nonlinearity, the nonlinear governing equations of FGM doubly curved shells are derived using Reissner's first order shear deformation (FOSD) theory. Three different boundary conditions of four edges simply supported (SSSS), four edges clamped (CCCC), clamped-clamped-simply-simply (CCSS) were studied, and a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations was obtained with the help of Galerkin principle. The nonlinear forced vibration response of the FGM doubly curved shell is obtained by using the modified Lindstedt Poincare (MLP) method. The accuracy of this method was verified by comparing it with published literature. Finally, the effects of curvature ratio, power law index, void coefficient, prestress, and initial geometric imperfections on the resonance of FGM doubly curved shells under different boundary conditions are fully discussed. The relevant research results can provide certain guidance for the design and application of doubly curved shell.

In this paper we analyze the error estimates for a single-phase nonlinear Stefan problem with Neumann boundary conditions. We apply the modified Crank-Nicolson method to get the optimal order of error estimates in the temporal direction.

In this paper, numerical and experimental studies are performed to investigate the liquid impact on a free falling wedge. In the numerical simulation, the structure is assumed to be rigid and the elastic response is ignored. The fully nonlinear coupling between wedge and water is considered by an auxiliary function method based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM). At the intersection of the wedge surface and liquid surface, two coincident nodes are used to decouple the boundary conditions. The Eulerian free surface conditions in the local coordinate system are adopted to update the deformed free surface. In the experiments, five pressure sensors are fixed on each side of the wedge which is released from an experimental installation. Steel and aluminum wedges that have different structural elasticity are used in the experiments to investigate the influence of structural elasticity on the impact force. Numerical results are compared with experimental data and they agree very well. The influence of fluid gravity, body mass, initial entry speed and deadrise angle on the impact pressure are further investigated.
The aim of this study is to analyze the hydrodynamic properties of a 2D floating body with moon pool using a 2D fully nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank(NWT). This NWT was developed based on the Boundary Element Method(BEM) with potential theory and fully nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. Free surface elevations in the moon pool were calculated in the time domain for various frequencies of forced body motions. The added-mass and damping coefficients of the heaving body were also obtained. The present numerical results were compared with the analytic and experimental results and their accuracy was verified.
Seismic response of two dimensional liquid tanks is numerically simulated using fully nonlinear velocity potential theory. Galerkin-weighted-residual based finite element method is used for solving the governing Laplace equation with fully nonlinear free surface boundary conditions and also for velocity recovery. Based on mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) method, fourth order explicit Runge-Kutta scheme is used for time integration of free surface boundary conditions. A cubic-spline fitted regridding technique is used at every time step to eliminate possible numerical instabilities on account of Lagrangian node induced mesh distortion. An artificial surface damping term is used which mimics the viscosity induced damping and brings in numerical stability. Four earthquake motions have been suitably selected to study the effect of frequency content on the dynamic response of tank-liquid system. The nonlinear seismic response vis-a-vis linear response of rectangular liquid tank has been studied. The impulsive and convective components of hydrodynamic forces, e.g., base shear, overturning base moment and pressure distribution on tank-wall are quantified. It is observed that the convective response of tank-liquid system is very much sensitive to the frequency content of the ground motion. Such sensitivity is more pronounced in shallow tanks.

Hydrodynamic analysis of a surface-piercing body with an open chamber was performed with incident regular waves and forced-heaving body motions. The floating body was simulated in the time domain using a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) technique based on potential theory. This paper focuses on the hydrodynamic behavior of the free surfaces inside the chamber for various input conditions, including a two-input system: both incident wave profiles and forced body velocities were implemented in order to calculate the maximum surface elevations for the respective inputs and evaluate their interactions. An appropriate equivalent linear or quadratic viscous damping coefficient, which was selected from experimental data, was employed on the free surface boundary inside the chamber to account for the viscous energy loss on the system. Then a comprehensive parametric study was performed to investigate the nonlinear behavior of the wave-body interaction.
