Two enhancements to a recently developed plastic-damage-contact model for concrete are presented. The model itself, which uses planes of degradation that can undergo damage and separation but that can regain contact according to a contact law, is described. The first enhancement is a new damage evolution function which provides a completely smooth transition from the undamaged to the damaged state and from pre-peak to post-peak regions. The second is an improved contact function that governs the potential degree of contact with increasing opening on a crack plane. The use of a damage evolution function with a pre-peak has implications for the consistent tangent matrix/stress recovery algorithm developed for the model implementation, and amendments to this algorithm to accommodate the new function are described. A series of unpublished experimental tests on notched specimens undertaken in Cardiff in the mid 1990s are then described. These include notched beam tests as well as prismatic and cylindrical torsion tests. The tests are then considered in three dimensional finite element analyses using the modified Craft model implemented in the finite element program LUSAS. Comparisons between experimental and numerical data show reasonable agreement except that the numerical simulations do not fully describe the latter stages of the softening responses for the torsion examples. Finally, it is concluded that the torsion tests described provide useful benchmark examples for the validation of three-dimensional numerical models for concrete.
A new type of fabricated subway station construction technology can effectively solve these problems. For a new type of metro structure form, it is necessary to clarify its mechanical properties, especially the seismic performance. A soil-structure elastoplastic finite element model is established to perform three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis based on the first fabricated station structure-Yuanjiadian station of Changchun Metro Line 2, China. Firstly, the nonlinear seismic response characteristics of the fabricated and cast-in-place subway stations under different seismic wave excitations are compared and analyzed. Then, a comprehensive analysis of several important parameters that may affect the seismic response of fabricated subway stations is given. The results show that the maximum plastic strain, the interlayer deformation, and the internal force of fabricated station structures are smaller than that of cast-in-place structure, which indicates that the fabricated station structure has good deformation coordination capability and mechanical properties. The seismic responses of fabricated stations were mainly affected by the soil-structure stiffness ratio, the soil inertia effect, and earthquake load conditions rarely mentioned in cast-in-place stations. The critical parameters have little effect on the interlayer deformation but significantly affect the joints' opening distance and contact stress, which can be used as the evaluation index of the seismic performance of fabricated station structures. The presented results can better understand the seismic responses and guide the seismic design of the fabricated station.
In this study, a constitutive model called the disturbed state concept (DSC) was modified to be applied to the interface shear stress-displacement relationship between geosynthetics. The DSC model is comprised of two reference states, namely the relative intact (RI) and the fully adjusted (FA) state, and one function, namely the disturbance function. This model is a unified approach and can allow for various models as an RI state such as elastic-perfectly plastic model, hierarchical model, and so on. In addition, by using this model, the elastic and plastic displacements can be considered simultaneously. Comparisons between the measured data and predicted results through the parameters determined from four sets of large direct shear tests showed good agreements with each other, especially for the smooth geomembrane-involved interface. Although there are slight differences at peak shear strength for textured geomembrane-involved interface, this model can still be useful to predict the position of displacement at peak strength and the large displacement (or residual) shear strength.

Recently a simplified design procedure as well as load transfer model for seismic steel moment connections with welded straight haunch have been proposed by Lee and Uang. Cyclic seismic testing was conducted to verify the proposed design procedure and to develop the details that will prevent the cracking at the haunch tip, where stress concentration was the highest. All the specimens thus designed effectively pushed plastic hinging away from the haunch tip and were able to develop satisfactory plastic rotation capacity of 0.04 radian with no fracture. A sloped edge combined with drilling a hole near the haunch tip or a pair of stiffeners(partially or fully) extended from the beam web successfully prevented the crack initiation at the haunch tip. The strut action of the haunch web, which had been predicted from the previous analytical study, was also experimentally identified through the strain gage readings.

This research project was carried out to develop the technique to assess quantitatively and rapidly the stability of a tunnel by using the measured displacement at the tunnel construction site under excavation. To achieve this purpose, a critical strain concept was introduced and applied to an assessment of a tunnel under construction. The new technique calculates numerically the strains of the surrounding ground by using the measured displacements during excavation. A numerical practical system was developed based on the proposed analysis technique in this study. The feasibility of the developed analysis module was verified by incorporating the analysis results obtained by commercial programs into the developed analysis module. To verify the feasibility of the developed analysis module, analysis results of models both elastic and elasto-plastic grounds were investigated for the circular tunnel design. Then the measured displacements obtained in the field are utilized practically to assess the safety of tunnels using critical strain concept. It was verified that stress conditions of in-situ ground and ground material properties were accurately assessed by inputting the calculated displacement obtained by commercial program into this module for the elastic ground. However for the elasto-plastic ground, analysis module can reproduce the initial conditions more closely for the soft rock ground than for the weathered soil ground. The stability of tunnels evaluated with two types of strains, that is, the strains obtained by dividing the crown displacement into a tunnel size and the strains obtained by using the analysis module. From this study, it is confirmed that the critical strain concept can be fully adopted within the engineering judgment in practical tunnel problems and the developed module can be used as a reasonable tool for the assessment of the tunnel stability in the field.

The supersonic shock wave generated by fully coupled explosion will change into subsonic shock wave, plastic wave, and elastic wave consecutively as the wave propagates through rock mass. While the estimation of the blast-induced peak pressure was the main aim of the companion paper, this paper will concentrate on the estimation of the rise time of blast-induced pressure. The rise time can be expressed as a function of explosive density, isentropic exponent, detonation velocity, exponential coefficient of the peak pressure attenuation, dynamic yield stress, plastic wave velocity, elastic wave velocity, rock density, Hugoniot parameters, etc. Parametric analysis was performed to pinpoint the most influential parameter that affects the rise time and it was found that rock properties are more sensitive than explosive properties. The probabilistic distribution of the rise time is evaluated by the Rosenblueth'S point estimate method from the probabilistic distributions of explosive properties and rock properties. Numerical analysis was performed to figure out the effect of rock properties and explosive properties on the uncertainty of blast-induced vibration. Uncertainty analysis showed that uncertainty of rock properties constitutes the main portion of blast-induced vibration uncertainty rather than that of explosive properties. Numerical analysis also showed that the loading rate, which is the ratio of the peak blasting pressure to the rise time, is the main influential factor on blast-induced vibration. The loading rate is again more influenced by rock properties than by explosive properties.
A fully coupled effective stress dynamic analysis procedure for modeling seismic liquefaction on slope is presented. An elasto-plastic formulation is used for the constitutive model UBCSAND in which the yield loci are radial lines of constant stress ratio and the flow rule is non-associated. This is incorporated into the 2D version of Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) by modifying the existing Mohr-Coulomb model. This numerical procedure is used to simulate centrifuge test data from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). UBCSAND is first calibrated to cyclic direct simple shear tests performed on Nevada sand. Both pre- and post-liquefaction behaviour is captured. The centrifuge test is then modeled and the predicted accelerations, excess porewater pressures, and displacements are compared with the measurements. The results are shown to be in general agreement. The procedure is currently being used in the design of liquefaction remediation measures for a number of dam, bridge, tunnel, and pipeline projects in Western Canada.
In this paper, the global study trends for material behaviors are investigated regarding the static and dynamic hardenings and final fractures of marine structural steels. In particular, after reviewing all of the papers published at the 4th and 5th ICCGS (International Conference on Collision and Grounding of Ship), the used hardening and fracture properties are summarized, explicitly presenting the material properties. Although some studies have attempted to employ new plasticity and fracture models, it is obvious that most still employed an ideal hardening rule such as perfect plastic or linear hardening and a simple shear fracture criterion with an assumed value of failure strain. HSE (2001) presented pioneering study results regarding the temperature dependency of material strain hardening at various levels of temperature, but did not show strain rate hardening at intermediate or high strain rate ranges. Nemat-Nasser and Guo (2003) carried out fully coupled tests for DH-36 steel: strain hardening, strain rate hardening, and temperature hardening and softening at multiple steps of strain rates and temperatures. The main goal of this paper is to provide the theoretical background for strain and strain rate hardening. In addition, it presents the procedure and methodology needed to derive the material constants for the static hardening constitutive equations of Ludwik, Hollomon, Swift, and Ramberg-Osgood and for the dynamic hardening constitutive equations of power from Cowper-Symonds and Johnson-Cook.
Recently, growing interests in frozen ground have stimulated us to advance fundamental theories and systematic researches on soil behavior under freezing conditions. Unlike the well-established soil mechanics theory, temperature variation and phase change of pore-water cause water migration to cold side, ground heaving, sharp increase in earth pressure, etc., which bring about serious problems in frozen geotechnical structures. Elasto-plastic mechanical constitutive model for frozen/unfrozen soil subjected to fully coupled THM phenomena is formulated based on a new stress variable that is continuous in frozen-unfrozen transitional regions. Numerical simulations are conducted to discuss numerical reliability and applicability of the developed constitutive model: one-dimensional heaving pressure, tri-axial compression test, and one-side freezing tests. The numerical results show that developed model can efficiently describe complex THM phenomena of frozen soil, and they can be utilized to analyze and design the geotechnical structures under freezing conditions, and predict their long-term behavior.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of high temperature and deficit irrigation on growth and yield of hot pepper. Hot pepper was subjected to four irrigation treatments: fully irrigation (FI), 10, 20, and 30 days deficit irrigation (DI) combination with high temperature treatment. Control plants were grown natural environment and conventional culture methods. The plant height treated with high temperature was significantly higher than that of control plant. At FI combination with high temperature treatment, growth parameters such as stem diameter, leaf area, fresh and dry weight were the greatest. The yield was the greatest (2,036 kg/10a) under control, DI combination with high temperature treatment decreased by approximately 42% compare with FI combination with high temperature treatment. The number of abnormal fruits was approximately 38/plant under control, which was the smallest and that of 30 days DI combination with high temperature was higher 3.3 times compare with control. Flower abscission and calcium deficiency induced by DI treatments, especially those physiological disorder promoted by increasing DI treatments period. Results indicated that yield of hot pepper reduced by DI treatments, these results suggest that the growers should irrigate to proper soil moisture for preventing reduction of total fruit yield.
