Implementation and Evaluation of Integrated Viewier for Displanning Text and TIFF Image Materials on the Internet Environments (인터넷상에서 텍스트와 TIFF 이미지 자료 디스플레이를 위한 뷰어 구현 및 평가)

  • The purpose of the study is to develop an integrated viewer which can display both text and image files on the Internet environment. Up to now, most viewers for full-text databases can be displayed documents only by image or graphic viewers. The newly developed system can compress document files in commercial word processors (e.g, 한글TM, WordTM, ExceITM, PowerpointTM, HunminJungumTM, ArirangTM, CADTM), as well as conventional TIFF image file in smaller size, which were converted into DVI(DeVice Independent) file format, and display them on computer screen. IDoc Viewer was evaluated to test its performance by user group, consisting of 5 system developers, 5 librarians, and 10 end-users. IDoc Viewer has been proved to be good or excellent at 20 out of 26 check lists.

An Embedded Text Index System for Mass Flash Memory (대용량 플래시 메모리를 위한 임베디드 텍스트 인덱스 시스템)

  • Flash memory has the advantages of nonvolatile, low power consumption, light weight, and high endurance. This enables the flash memory to be utilized as a storage of mobile computing device such as PMP(Portable Multimedia Player). Potable device with a mass flash memory can store various multimedia data such as video, audio, or image. Typical index systems for mobile computer are inefficient to search a form of text like lyric or title. In this paper, we propose a new text index system, named EMTEX(Embedded Text Index). EMTEX has the following salient features. First, it uses a compression algorithm for embedded system. Second, if a new insert or delete operation is executed on the base table. EMTEX updates the text index immediately. Third, EMTEX considers the characteristics of flash memory to design insert, delete, and rebuild operations on the text index. Finally, EMTEX is executed as an upper layer of DBMS. Therefore, it is independent of the underlying DBMS. We evaluate the performance of EMTEX. The Experiment results show that EMTEX can outperform th conventional index systems such as Oracle Text and FT3.

  • KORMARC used in library bibliographic information, had been pointed several weaknesses such as inflexibility lack of link information and compatibility. In addition, a sudden increase in digital information associated with development of internet is demanding an integration of web resources metadata as the resource of library information. This study mentioned XML/KORMARC system or adaption of XML standard format turned out to be the most efficient way to use KORMARC formats and to expand the range of those information service such as bibliographic information, factual information, referral information and full-text.

  • As Damyang has preserved both beautiful natural environment and tradition very well, it needs colors which can coexist with Damyang while preserving it as it is rather than colorful and refined colors. However, the present Damyang deteriorates the quality of beautiful natural scenes by chaotic uses of colors. Therefore, colors which can represent symbolism based on the present colors of Damyang should be used so that everyone can be pleased with them. Finally, the basic colors decided were classified into main, supplement and highlight colors in consideration of characteristics of each scene and they were effectively arranged based on the colors decided. If such colors and color schemes are properly applied according to characteristics of scenes, ecological, historical, cultural and traditional scenes of Damyang can be preserved consistently. Academic literature uses the abstract to succinctly communicate complex research. An abstract may act as a stand-alone entity instead of a full paper. As such, an abstract is used by many organizations as the basis for selecting research that is proposed for presentation in the form of a poster, platform/oral presentation or workshop presentation at an academic conference. Most literature database search engines index only abstracts rather than providing the entire text of the paper. Full texts of scientific papers must often be purchased because of copyright and/or publisher fees and therefore the abstract is a significant selling point for the reprint or electronic version of the full-text. Abstracts are protected under copyright law just as any other form of written speech is protected. However, publishers of scientific articles invariably make abstracts publicly available, even when the article itself is protected by a toll barrier. For example, articles in the biomedical literature are available publicly from medline which is accessible through design. It is a common misconception that the abstracts in medline provide sufficient information for medical practitioners, students, scholars and patients. The abstract can convey the main results and conclusions of a scientific article but the full text article must be consulted for details of the methodology.

Implementation of Very Large Hangul Text Retrieval Engine HMG (대용량 한글 텍스트 검색 엔진 HMG의 구현)

  • In this paper, we implement a gigabyte Hangul text retrieval engine HMG(Hangul MG) which is based on the English text retrieval engine MG(Managing Gigabytes) and the Hangul lexical analyzer HAM(Hangul Analysis Module). To support Hangul information, we use the KSC 5601 code in the database construction and query processing stages. The lexical analyzer, parser, and index construction module of the MG system are modified to support Hangul information. To show the usefulness of HMG system, we implemented a NOD(Novel On Demand) system supporting the retrieval of Hangul novels on the WWW. The proposed system HMG can be utilized in the construction of massive full-text information retrieval systems supporting Hangul.
