  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of the impulse turbine for a owe type wave energy conversion device. Numerical analysis was performed using the commercially-available software FLUENT. This parametric study includes variation of the setting angle of the guide vane. Since parametric study at various flow coefficients requires a tremendous amount of computing time, two-dimensional cascade flow approximation was employed to determine the optimum principal particulars in a rather simple manner. A Full three-dimensional calculation was also performed for several cases to confirm the validity of the two-dimensional approach. Results were compared to other experimental data, such as Setoguchi et al. (2001)'s extensive set of data, and found that the usefulness of 2-D analysis was well demonstrated. The advantages of each method were also evaluated.

  • This paper analyzes the effects of various operating voltages on the luminous efficacy of high flux RGB LEDs. At first, their equivalent diode model are established from measurements of the V-I characteristics. Operating voltages of three types are applied to a simple LED circuit: DC, square-wave, and full-wave-rectified sine wave. As the result, DC voltage driving gives the hightest efficiency, but invokes much greater variation in the luminous flux and more shift in the peak wavelength.

  • The motion of a small boat in seas is affected in relatively higher degrees than the case of a larger ship by the specific characteristics of sea waves, i.e., the wave length and height. Ship's motion caused by sea waves is a matter of special importance to small fishing boats, because they carry out fishing job in rough seas frequently. This is an experimental study on the rolling and pitching motions of full scale ship. In the experiment, the ship's motions were measured for head, how, beam, quarter and following seas. The experiment were carried out on board the training ship Pusan 404(160 GT) in the adjacent waters off NAM HYENG JAE DO on Dec. 13th 1994. The sea condition during the measurements was that wave height 2.5m, no swell and the wind velocity of 12 m/sec. Some statistic considerations were given to the observed data by the series analysis methods and discussed in this paper.

  • A real-time method to measure full field retardation near quarter wavelength is proposed. The circularly polarized beam passes through a sample with a large aperture. The measuring beam then goes through a quarter-wave plate and is then split by a Wollaston prism. An image with two sub-images is then detected by a high-speed image sensor. The full field retardation near quarter wavelength can be obtained in real time by processing the image. The measured retardation is independent of the fast axis angle of the sample and the fluctuation of the initial intensity. In experiments, a wedge waveplate is measured with different fast axis angle and initial intensity, and the full field retardations are acquired. The maximum and standard deviation of the full field retardation is $1.5^{\circ}$ and $0.4^{\circ}$. The validity of the method is verified.

  • This paper shows that higher amplification can be achieved by applying load current on the internal feedback winding of the magnetic amplifier under test. Since the magnetic flux of the control winding and internal feedback winding saturate the core more fully, the permeability tends to zero and load current increases to the value more than that of ordinary magnetic amplifier without feedback.

  • The resonator using the shielded coplanar waveguide [S.C.P.W.] bounded by the rectangular waveguide is designed. The resonant frequency is obtained by using the full-wave analysis method. The fringing capacitances of the open-ended center strip in the resonator are obtained from the equivalent circuits by 3 different methods.

  • In this study, the frequency transfer function of motions are predicted from the result of a full-scale seakeeping trials. Because the real sea has the characteristics of multi-directional waves,we compare the results in the one directional waves with ones in the directional waves. For calculation of the frequency transfer function in the directional waves, Takezawa's inverse estimation method was introduced and the frequency ranges were divided into three parts in order to consider following seas. The full-scale seakeeping trials was executed in the south sea of Korea using the stern trawler. Those results show that analysis method of the multi-directional waves is more reliable than that of one directional waves, and confirm the possibility of applying this method to the full-scale seakeeping trials.

  • A series of towing tank tests were carried out for 18 full ship models of high block coefficients. The resistance coefficients and wake distribution at the propeller plane were measured and carefully examined. Regression analysis was employed to find out the relationships with the hull form parameters. Equations for wave resistance coefficient, form factor, and nominal wake are given. A harmonic analysis of measured wake was performed to look into the influence of the local stern shape on the magnitude of fluctuating wake components at three different radii. The amplitude of wake harmonics was also expressed by regression quations. It was found that the regression formulas were very useful in estimating resistance and circumferential wake characteristics of full ship models. It was also considered that the formulas presented in this paper could be utilized in the hull form improvement in a preliminary design.
