A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flame structure of CH$_4$$N_2$-air counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed chemistry were adopted in this simulation. The characteristic vortex and chemical time scales were introduced to quantify and investigate the extinction phenomenon during a flame-vortex interaction. The results showed that fuel- and air-side vortex cause an unsteady extinction. In this case, the flame interacting with a vortex was extinguished at much larger scalar dissipation rate than steady flame. It was also found that the air-side vortex extinguished a flame more rapidly than the fuel-side vortex. Furthermore, it was noted that the degree of unsteady effect experienced by a flame can be investigated by comparing the above two characteristic time scales, and this analysis could give an appropriate reason for the results of the previously reported experiment.
Six shear coaxial injectors for a 3 tonf-class liquid rocket engine using oxygen and methane as propellants were designed and manufactured by considering geometric design parameters such as a recess length and a taper angle. Cold-flow tests on the injectors were performed using water and air as simulants. By changing the water mass flow rate and air mass flow rate, the injection pressure drop under single-injection and bi-injection was measured. The discharge coefficients through the injector oxidizer-side and fuel-side were calculated and the discharge coefficient ratio between bi-injection and single-injection was obtained. Under single-injection, the recess served to reduce the injection pressure drop on the injector fuel-side. For the injectors without recess, the discharge coefficients under bi-injection were almost the same as those under single-injection. However, for the injectors with recess, the taper angle and bi-injection had a significant effect on the discharge coefficient.
A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the flame structure of $CH_4/N_2-Air$ counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed reaction mechanism are adopted in this calculation. To quantify the strain on flame induced by a vortex, a scalar dissipation rate (SDR) is introduced. Results show that the fuel and air-side vortex cause an unsteady extinction. In this case, the flame interacting with a vortex is extinguished at much larger SDR than steady flame. It is also found that air-side vortex extinguishes a flame more rapidly than fuel-side vortex. The unsteady effect induced by flame-vortex interaction does not lead to a transient OH overshoot of the maximum steady concentration observed in experiment, while $HO_2$ radical increases more than the maximum steady concentration with increasing SDR. In addition, it is seen that NO and $NO_2$ are not sensitive to the unsteady variation of SDR.
Two different type scramjet models with side-wall compression and top-wall compression inlets have been tested in HPTF (Hypersonic Propulsion Test Facility) under the experimental conditions of Mach number 5.8, total temperature 1700K, total pressure 4.5㎫ and mass flow rate 3.5kg/s. The liquid kerosene was used as main fuel for the scramjets. In order to get fast ignition in the combustor, a small amount of hydrogen was used as a pilot. A strut with alternative tail was employed for increasing the compression ratio and for mixing enhancement in the side-wall compression case. Recessed cavities were used as a flameholder for combustion stability. The combustion efficiency was estimated by one dimensional theory. The uniformity of the facility nozzle flow was verified by a scanning pitot rake. The experimental results showed that the kerosene fuel was successfully ignited and stable combustion was achieved for both scramjet models. However the thrusts were still less than the model drags due to the low combustion efficiencies.
In this study, the crash analysis was carried out to evaluate the influence of steel sheet grade and thickness on weight reduction and crash characteristics for front side member which had an important role of absorbing the impact energy during front and side impact. In order to achieve the aim of this study the reverse engineering was applied to obtain 3D model of front side member from BIW for the FE simulation. In the result, the crashworthiness of front side member is considerably improved with steel sheet strength and thickness increase. Also, the weight reduction in automotive parts for the improvement of the fuel efficiency can be easily achieved with applying high strength steel without deterioration of crashworthiness.
This paper is concerned with the weight reduction of front side member of a vehicle considering the application of high strength steel sheet. The influence of steel sheet grade and thickness on the energy absorption, impact load and deformed shape of front side member is investigated by using reverse engineering and FE-analysis. The reverse engineering is applied to obtain 3D model of front side member from B.I.W for the FE simulation. FE analysis is carried out with commercial crash analysis SW PAM-CRASH. The crashworthiness of front side member is considerably improved with steel sheet strength and thickness increase. From the result of this study the weight reduction in automotive parts for the improvement of the fuel efficiency can be easily achieved with replacing high strength steel without deterioration of crashworthiness.
Aerodynamic characteristics, such as drag and lift, play an important role in automobile design under certain speed conditions. Such characteristics are essential to design an automobile since they are directly related to automobile's performance such as passenger safety and fuel consumption. There is a huge demand for the automobile to have safe performance at high speed. Reduction in drag is also important and it could lead to the solution of air flow induced noise and dust problems. The objective of this research is to find out the aerodynamic differences between conventional side mirror and a modified one using CFD. Although drag generated around a side mirror is only about 7% of the total drag when a car runs, it is very closely related to driver's field of vision and noise generation. CFD simulation of the flowfield around a car side-view mirror was performed using a commercial code; Gambit and FLUENT.
A new type of a fretting wear tester has been designed and developed in order to simulate the actual vibration behavior of a nuclear fuel rod for springs/dimples in room temperature. When considering the actual contact condition between fuel rod and spring/dimple, if fretting wear progress due to the flow-induced vibration (FIV) under a specific normal load exerted on the fuel rod by the elastic deformation of the spring, the contacting force between the fuel rod and dimple that were located in the opposite side should be decreased. Consequently, the evaluation of developed spacer grids against fretting wear damage should be performed with the results of a cell unit experiments because the contacting force is one of the most important variables that influence to the fretting wear mechanism. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new type of fretting test rig in order to simulate the actual contact condition. In this paper, the development procedure of a new fretting wear tester and its performance were discussed in detail.
Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is widely adopted to control NO emission in combustion systems. Recirculated flue gas decreases flame temperature and reaction rate, resulting in the decrease in thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the recirculated flue gas in fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), could enhance much improved reduction in NO per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to conventional FGR in air. In the present study, the effect of dilution methods in air and fuel sides on NO reduction has been investigated numerically by using $N_2$ and $CO_2$ as diluent gases to simulate flue gases. Counterflow diffusion flames were studied in conjunction with the laminar flamelet model of turbulent flames. Results showed that $CO_2$ dilution was more effective in NO reduction because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat of $CO_2$ compared to $N_2$. Fuel dilution was more effective in reducing NO emission than air dilution when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas was used by the increase in the nozzle exit velocity, thereby the stretch rate, with dilution gas added to fuel side.
A Spent Fuel Pool (SFP) is designed to store spent fuel assemblies in the pool. And, a SFP cooling and cleanup system cools the SFP coolant through a heat exchanger which exchanges heat with component cooling water. If the cooling system fails or interfacing pipe (e.g., suction or discharge pipe) breaks, the cooling function may be lost, probably leading to fuel damage. In order to prevent such an incident, it is required to properly cool the spent fuel assemblies in the SFP by either recovering the cooling system or injecting water into the SFP. Probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) is a good tool to assess the SFP risk when an initiating event for the SFP occurs. Since PSA has been focused on reactor-side so far, it is required to study on the framework of PSA approach for SFP and identify the key factors in terms of fuel damage frequency (FDF) through a case study. In this study, therefore, a case study of SFP-PSA on the basis of design information of APR-1400 has been conducted quantitatively, and several sensitivity analyses have been conducted to understand the impact of the key factors on FDF.
