DTG Big Data Analysis for Fuel Consumption Estimation

  • Big data information and pattern analysis have applications in many industrial sectors. To reduce energy consumption effectively, the eco-driving method that reduces the fuel consumption of vehicles has recently come under scrutiny. Using big data on commercial vehicles obtained from digital tachographs (DTGs), it is possible not only to aid traffic safety but also improve eco-driving. In this study, we estimate fuel consumption efficiency by processing and analyzing DTG big data for commercial vehicles using parallel processing with the MapReduce mechanism. Compared to the conventional measurement of fuel consumption using the On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) device, in this paper, we use actual DTG data and OBD-II fuel consumption data to identify meaningful relationships to calculate fuel efficiency rates. Based on the driving pattern extracted from DTG data, estimating fuel consumption is possible by analyzing driving patterns obtained only from DTG big data.

Optimization of the Multi-chamber Perforated Muffler for the Air Processing Unit of the Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (연료전지 자동차용 흡기 소음기의 설계 변수 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • Fuel cells convert a fuel together with oxygen in a highly efficient electrochemical reaction to electricity and water. Since the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell stack dose not generate any noise, Fuel cell systems are expected to operated much quieter than combustion engines. However, the tonal noise and the broad band noise caused by a centrifugal compressor and an electric motor cause which is required to feed the ambient air to the cathode of the fuel cell stack with high pressure. In this study, the multi-camber perforated muffler is used to reduce noise. We propose optimized muffler model using an axiomatic design method that optimizes the parameters of perforated muffler while keeping the volume of muffler minimized.

Simulation of the Digital Image Processing Algorithm for the Coating Thickness Automatic Measurement of the TRISO-coated Fuel Particle

  • TRISO (Tri-Isotropic)-coated fuel particle is widely applied due to its higher stability at high temperature and its efficient retention capability for fission products in the HTGR (high temperature gas-cooled reactor), one of the highly efficient Generation IV reactors. The typical ball-type TRISO-coated fuel particle with a diameter of about 1 mm is composed of a nuclear fuel particle as a kernel and of outer coating layers. The coating layers consist of a buffer PyC, inner PyC, SiC, and outer PyC layer. In this study, a digital image processing algorithm is proposed to automatically measure the thickness of the coating layers. An FBP (filtered backprojection) algorithm was applied to reconstruct the CT image using virtual X-ray radiographic images for a simulated TRISO-coated fuel particle. The automatic measurement algorithm was developed to measure the coating thickness for the reconstructed image with noises. The boundary lines were automatically detected, then the coating thickness was circularly by the algorithm. The simulation result showed that the measurement error rate was less than 1.4%.

Combustion Characteristics of Premixed Burner for Fuel Reformer (개질기용 예혼합 연소장치의 연소특성 연구)

  • Fuel processing systems which convert HC fuel into $H_2$ rich gas (such as stream reforming, partial oxidation, auto-thermal reforming) need high temperature environment($600-1000^{\circ}C$). Generally, anode-off gas or mixture of anode-off gas and LNG is used as input gas of fuel reformer. In order to make efficient and low emission burner system for fuel reformer, it is necessary to elucidate the combustion and emission characteristic of fuel reformer burner. The purpose of this study is to develop a porous premixed flat ceramic burner that can be used for 1-5kW fuel cell reformer. Ceramic burner experiments using natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas were carried out respectively to investigate the flame characteristics by heating capacity and equivalence ratio. Results show that the stable flat flames can be established for natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas and mixture of natural & anode off gas as reformer fuel. For all of fuels, their burning velocities become smaller as the equivalence ratio goes to the lean mixture ratio, and a lift-off occurs at lean limit. Flame length in hydrogen and anode off gas became longer with increasing the heat capacity.

  • Fuel spray in the MPI gasoline injector and its atomization characteristics are investigated with both macroscopic and microscopic visualization systems. The Bosch injector is inserted into an air-assist spray adapter which is designed to be fabricated and assembled easily. particle motion analysis system is used to measure the SMD of injector, where the assistant air pressure is varied from 0.0 to 1.5bar with fuel pressure 2.8bar. Droplet size decreased with higher air pressure and fine fuel spray with below $60{\mu}m$ of SMD is acquired at the assistant air pressure over 0.5bar.

  • Spray angle, a parameter which is most commonly used to evaluate. spray distribution, is important because it affects the axial and radial distribution of the fuel. Spray angles were measured and compared for the pintle-type gasoline fuel injector with n-heptane as a test fuel with the three different measuring techniques, i.e. digital image processing, shadowgraphy and spray patternator, respectively. Fuel was injected with the injection pressures of 0.2-0.35MPa into the room temperature and atmospheric pressure environment. In digital image processing method, the transmittance level greatly influences the spray angle with the axial distance from the injector. From the experimental results by the shadowgraphy technique, it is obvious that the spray angle vary during the injection period. The results of spray angle from the spray patternator show that there exist the different spray angles in the different areas. The spray angles increase with the increase in the injection pressure for the three measurement techniques considered in this study. The spray angle is widely different, especially in the near region from the injector, according to the measurement techniques used in this experimental work.

  • The fuel injection type, in the gasoline engines of atomization of fuel droplet and its distribution hae influenced directly on the decision of engine performance and harmful emission. In this paper, atomization characteristics of fuel spray is investigated with microscopic visualization system. Particle motion analysis system is used to measure the SMD from fuel spray of air-assisted injector by initial factors such as temperature of ambient air and air-assisted pressure. As air-assist pressure and ambientair temperature increase, the SMD is decreased, and its variation is more stable.

  • In a gasoline engine with port injection system, the fuel behavior in the intake port has significant influence on the HC emission and the precise A/F control. That is to say, it is inevitable that the injection direction and behavior of fuel injected in the intake port have an effect on the generation of unburned HC within a cylinder. In this paper, we visualized fuel behavior in the intake port using micro CCD camera synchronized with the stroboscope and investigated the fuel-film characteristics formed at the wall of intake port by processing image captured with VCR in the transparent intake port made of acryl. Using these measuring methods, it was found that fuel behavior and the formation of fuel-film in the intake port could be evaluated qualitatively. And results obtained by these methods show that 2-spray injector minimizes the fuel-film formed in the intake port of a DOHC gasoline engine.

  • In a fuel injection engine, atomization of liquid fuel and mixture formation process has influenced(or affected) directly on the engine performance and pollutant emission. In this study, the characteristics of fuel spray and the behaviors of secondary atomization developed at the downstream of the valves were investigated using an image processing method. Solid and perforated valves are chosen in order to evaluate the valve performance in terns of air flow rate, valve opening angle and valve shape. Experimental results clearly indicate that the spray atomization quality can be improved by increasing the perforated rat io and the blockage rat io in the perforated valve, the characteristics of spray atomization is improved by using the perforated valve with high perforated rat io and blockage ratio.
