An experimental study on the flow characteristics under various laminar coflow diffusion flames was conducted with a particular focus on the buoyancy force exerted from gaseous hydrocarbon fuels. Methane ($CH_4$), ethylene ($C_2H_4$), and n-butane ($C_4H_{10}$) were used as the fuels. A coflow burner and the Schlieren imaging technique were used to observe the flow field of each fuel near the nozzle exit as well as the flow characteristics in the flames. The results show that a vortex with a density heavier than air appeared in n-butane near the nozzle exit with a strong negative buoyancy on the fuel steam. As the Reynolds number increased through the control of the fuel velocity of the n-butane flame, the vortices were greater and the vortex tips were moved up from the nozzle exit. In addition, the heated nozzle affected the flow fields of the fuel steam near the nozzle exit.

The static pressure distribution, atomization characteristics and velocity distribution of tapered nozzle swirl spray is analyzed and then compared with original swirl spray. The static pressure distribution inside the swirl spray is measured using a piezoresistive pressure transducer. Phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) is applied to measure and analyze the droplet size and velocity distribution of tapered nozzle and original swirl spray. The static pressure inside the spray shows the lower value compared to the atmospheric pressure and this pressure drop is getting attenuated as the taper angle is increased. The droplet size of tapered nozzle spray shows similar value compared to the original swirl spray at the horizontal mainstream while it shows increased value at vertical mainstream. The deteriorated atomization characteristics of tapered nozzle spray is improved by applying high fuel temperature injection without causing the spray collapse. The velocity results show that the larger portion of fuel is positioned with higher injection velocity, and the smaller portion of fuel is positioned with lower injection velocity with causing spatially non-uniform mixture distribution.
An experimental investigation of the characteristic of non-premixed lifted flames with nozzle hole-tone of high-frequency has been performed. Before the fuel was supplied to nozzle, the fuel was supplied through a burner cavity which was located under the nozzle. The fuel passed through the excitation cavity under the influence of the high-frequency affects the lifted flame characteristics. The measurements were performed in flow range that occurs lifted flame and blow out. When the high-frequency is generated from burner cavity, the lifted length became shorter, and noise reduced comparing to unexcitation case. Additionally, operating flow range was increased and diameter of flame base became smaller with high-frequency effect. Through this experiments, it's ascertained that the high-frequency excitation can be adopted with effective method for flame stability and noise reduction.
Experiments have been performed for the burners used in the non-oxidizing direct fired furnaces for the cold rolled plate to investigate the effect of fuel/air mixing patterns of the burner nozzle on flame shape, temperature and combustion gas concentration. CFD simulation has also been performed to investigate the mixing state of air-fuel for a nozzle mixing burner and a partially pre-mixing burner. A partially pre-mixing burner showed that flame temperature increased up to $26^{\circ}C$ on average compared than that of the nozzle mixing. It also showed that the mixing distance is important at the partially pre-mixing burner. Test results for a partially pre-mixing burner showed that the residual oxygen concentration and the volume ratio of $CO/CO_2$ of the flame were applicable to be used in field furnaces.

This paper describes the fuel spray characteristics of gasoline port injectors such as the breakup procedures of liquid fuel, breakup and extinction behaviors of fuel spray at nozzle tip, time history of SMD and velocity distribution of fuel spray in the direction of fuel stream. Pintle-type gasoline fuel injector was used to analyze mentioned spray characteristics. In order to visualize the fuel spray behaviors and to measure the droplet mean diameter and velocities of spray droplets, the Schlieren method, digital image processing and auto-correlation PIV were applied in this study. In addition, the spray characteristics according to the variation of time were considered. The results of fuel spray show that the liquid sheet breakup starts at 10mm downstream actively. The flying time is approximately 4msec between 50mm and 80mm down the nozzle tip. Also, SMD of fuel spray, the number of droplets and fuel velocity distribution at each point of downstream are discussed.

The 3.9 liter diesel engine with a mechanical fuel injection system was converted to di-methyl ether (DME) engine and performance optimized. In order to switch to the DME engine, the plunger of the high pressure fuel pump was replaced and the diameter of the injector nozzle was increased. Through this, the disadvantage of DME having low calorific value per volume can be compensated. To optimize the performance, the number of injector nozzle holes, injector opening pressure, and fuel injection timing were changed. As a result, the optimum number of injector nozzle holes was 5, the injector opening pressure was from 15 MPa to 18 MPa, and the injection timing was 15 crank angle degree before top dead center (CAD BTDC). The power was at the same level as the base diesel engine and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions could be reduced.

The intermitternt and transient fuel spray have been investigated from the simultaneous measurement of droplet sizes and velocities by using Phase/Doppler Particle Analyzer(PDPA). Measurement have been done on the spray axis and at the edge of the spray near nozzle at various gas-to-liquid density ratios(.rho./sub g//.rho./sub l/) that ranges from those found in free atmospheric jets to conditions typical of diesel engines. Probability density distributions of the droplet size and velocity were obtained from raw data and mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distribations were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. In the near nozzle region on the spray axis, droplet sizes ranged from the lower limit of the measurement system to the order of nozzle diameter for all (.rho./sub g/ /.rho./sub l/) and droplet sizes tended to be small on the spray edge. At the edge of spray, average droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and needle closing. The rms intensity is greatly incresed as the radial distance from the nozzle is increased. The probability density function which can best fit the physical breakage process such as breakup of fuel drops is exponecially decreasing log-hypebolic function with 4 parameters.

VCO nozzle is devised to minimize the HC emission and has been applied on some HSDI diesel engines. But it is not well reported whether VCO nozzle would be advantageous over SAC nozzle in a small HSDI diesel engine. In this paper it is presented that characteristics of VCO and SAC nozzle under common rail fuel injection system and their effects on the performance in a small HSDI diesel engine.
Despite its benefit in engine thermal efficiency, gasoline-direct-injection (GDI) engines generate substantial particulate matter (PM) emissions compared to conventional port-fuel-injection (PFI) engines. One of the reasons for this is that the spray collapse caused by the spray-to-spray interaction forms the locally rich fuel-air mixture and increases the fuel wall film. Previous studies have investigated the spray collapse phenomenon through the macroscopic observation of spray behavior using laser optical techniques, but it is somewhat difficult to understand the interaction between sprays that is initiated in the near-nozzle region within 10 mm from the nozzle exit. In this study, the spray structure, droplet size and velocity data were obtained using an X-ray imaging technique from the near-nozzle to the downstream of the spray to investigate the spray-to-spray interaction and discuss the effects of spray collapse on local droplet size and velocity distribution. It was found that as the ambient density increases, the spray collapse was promoted due to the intensified spray-to-spray interaction, thereby increasing the local droplet size and velocity from the near-nozzle region as a result of droplet collision/coalescence.
