  • Spent nuclear fuel is very dangerous substance emitting strong ionizing radiation which is harmful to human body. The remote handling of spent nuclear fuel is essential because people cannot access this substance without protecting radiation. To handle highly radioactive material or nuclear waste, many kinds of teleoperators such as master slave manipulator, electro mechanical manipulator, servo manipulator, mobile robot was developed. The distance and dimension of target object cannot be measured easily when highly radioactive material is handled by teleoperator because one should use lead glass or TV camera and monitor to protect radiation and see target object. During experiments on the remote handling of spent nuclear fuel by electro mechanical manipulator, we often felt that a distance and dimension measurement system is necessary to handle the objects which is in the highly radioactive environment, so we developed a system which is appropriate for this purpose.

  • The fuel handling machine handles the core assembly in refueling period of the reactor, it is necessary to predict the motion and structural integrity of it. The kinetic analysis of the fuel handling machine was carried out for the refueling motion. The reaction forces at the joints of machine were calculated with IDEAS code considering the weight of the machine and the loading force of the core assembly, Also, the structural analysis for the machine modeled by lumped-mass and beam elements was performed by using ANSYS code. The stresses and deformations were calculated for the equivalent static force based on the kinetic analysis and the seismic loads. The calculated displacements and stresses are quite low compared with allowable limits.

  • During demonstrations of a process conditioning spent nuclear fuels, it may be necessary to transport and handle Spent fuel road cuts from Post Irradiation Examination facility to Slitting device in The hot cell. It may be not easy to transport spent fuel rod cuts because rod cuts are high radioactive materials. For this purpose, we have developed a capsule for transporting and handling high radioactive materials. We have analyzed conditions of a hot cell and requirements of the device, designed and manufactured The prototype of the device, and done some performance tests. From the tests, it has been shown that transportation and handling without scattering nuclear material was smooth but the weight of capsule was heavy. These result will be reflected to a design of the improved transportation and handling device which will be used during demonstrations.

  • 저장조에 위치한 사용후핵연료는 가혹한 원자로 조건에 의해 구조적 건전성이 와해되므로 외력에 취약하다. 따라서 운반 및 취급 중 사고 상황이 고려되어야 한다. 극단적인 경우, 핵연료 취급 중 사고로 인해 핵연료 저장조에서 핵연료집합체 낙하가 발생할 수 있다. 이러한 사고 상황 하에서 연료봉 파손 등을 평가하기 위해서 수조에 충돌할 때 발생하는 충돌력을 분석할 필요가 있다. 이는 핵연료가 수조 바닥에 충돌할 때의 속도를 입력으로 하여 평가될 수 있다. 연료봉이 핵연료 중량 및 부피의 대부분을 차지하고 있으므로, 연료봉 다발은 수중 항력을 예측하는데 중요한 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 $3{\times}3$ 의 짧은 연료봉 다발을 모델로 사용하여 수중에서 낙하할 때 받는 수력을 계산하였고, 이를 전산모사와의 비교를 통하여 검증하였다. 본 방법론을 사용후핵연료 건전성 평가에 적용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

파이로 공정장치의 원격 취급성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study of Remote Handling Performance for Pyroprocessing Facilities)

  • In this study, it is performed that the assessment of feasibility of developed material processing facilities using tele-operation manipulator system for the pyroprocessing. To evaluate the performance of developed facilities using tele-operation system, several performance indices are considered as remote visibility, remote reachability and remote manipulability. These are applied to RHEM (Remote Handling Evaluation Mock-up) and digital mock-up system respectively. Through this approaches, several requirements for the system improvement are deduced and preliminary inspection for real system application is fully performed. Additionally, assembly and disassembly tasks for the repair of remote handling system are also examined remotely in RHEM and evaluated those performances.

  • The in-core neutron Flux Mapping System in a pressurized water reactor yields information on the neutron flux distribution in the reactor core at selected core locations by means of movable detectors. The obtained data are used to verify the reactor core design parameters. The detector cables run through guide tubes(thimbles), and typically thirty-six to fifty-eight thimbles are allocated in the reactor depending on the number of fuel assemblies. These thimbles are inserted into nuclear fuel assemblies through conduits connected from the bottom of the reactor vessel to a seal table. During the plant refueling outage period, the thimbles are withdrawn up to 4m from the seal table, the height of a nuclear fuel. In spite of their importance, however, the thimble handling work has been performed by only human operators. In addition, its efficiency is very low due to narrow working environments on the seal table, thereby resulting in the excessive radiation exposure of maintenance personnel. To solve these problems, a new thimble handling equipment for in-core flux mapping system was developed, and we confirmed its effectiveness through experiments.

  • Rod consolidation is a method of increasing spent nuclear fuel storage capacity by disassembling fuel assemblies thus storing the fuel rods in a tighter array. It involves some basic operations which closely resemble to the material handling of a manufacturing process. But all the operations must be controlled remotely in shielded environment from outside due to the highly radioactive nature of the workpiece. In this study the status of the rod consolidation technology in other countries has been surveyed and a feasibility study for the conceptual design of this process have been made.

  • This paper describes the development process of high stiffness body for ride and handling performance. High stiffness and light weight vehicle is a major target in the refinement of Passenger cars to meet customers' contradictable requirements between ride and handling performance and fuel economy This paper describes the analysis approach process for high stiffness body through the data level of body stiffness. According to the frequency band. we can suggest the design guideline about lg cornering static stiffness, torsional and lateral stiffness, body attachment stiffness. The ride and handling characteristic of a vehicle Is significantly affected by vibration transferred to the body through the chassis mounting points from front and rear suspension. It is known that body attachment stiffness is an important factor of ride and handling performance improvement. And high stiffness helps to improve the flexibility of bushing rate tuning between handling and road noise. It makes possible to design the good handling performance vehicle and save vehicles to be used in tests by using mother car at initial design stage. These improvements can lead to shortening the time needed to develop better vehicles.
