The fuel cell technology has been considered as a technology to reduce greenhouse gases emission from a ship. In this research, internal reforming 500kW solid oxide fuel cell system fueled by methane for a ship were developed. Characteristics of gas temperature, stack power and system efficiency depending on the air flow rate, $CH_4$ flow rate, $H_2O$ flow rate, and system operation pressure are evaluated. As a result, air and $CH_4$ flow rate directly affect the temperature of inlet and outlet gas in the fuel cell stack. When the air and $H_2O$ flow rate increase, the stack power and system efficiency increases. However, the case of $CH_4$ flow rate increase, the efficiency decreases.
This study investigates the enhancement of the oxygen diffusion rate in the cathode channel of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by pure oscillating flow, which is the same as the mechanism of human breathe. Three-dimensional numerical simulation, which has the full model of the fuel cell including electrochemical reaction, ion and electronic conduction, mass transfer and thermal variation and so on, is performed to show the phenomena in the channel at the case of a steady state. This model could analysis the oscillating flow as a moving mesh calculation coupled with electrochemical reaction on the catalyst layer, however, it needs a lot of calculation time for each case. The two dimensional numerical simulation has carried on for the study of oscillating flow effect in the cathode channel of PEMFC in order to reduce the calculation time. This study shows the diffusion rate of the oxygen increased and the emission rate of the water vapor increased in the channel by oscillating flow without any forced flow.

In this paper, characteristics of a port injection type LPG fuel system were investigated to adopt the system to a spark ignition engine through rig test. Engine combustion characteristics for limited conditions and the precise control method of LPG fuel supply were also studied. As a basic experiment, the effects and the relationships of parameters such as orifice area, fuel delivery pressure, fuel temperature and flow coefficient were established. From this, one dimensional compressible flow equation can be applied to control gaseous fuel flow rate by setting pressure difference between vaporizer and manifold to a certain range, for example about 1.2 bar in a naturally aspirated engine. The combustion analysis results of LPG engine were also compared with those of gasoline engine according to spark timing and load change. At part load and stoichiometric condition, the MBT spark timing of LPG fueled engine is retarded by 2$^{\circ}$ - 4$^{\circ}$CA compared to that of gasoline engine. On the contrary, the spark timing of LPG fueled engine can be advanced by 5$^{\circ}$- 10$^{\circ}$ CA at WOT, which results from higher Octane Number and burned fraction of LPG fuel compared to gasoline.
The architecture of the Fuel Thermal Management System (FTMS) in a commercial aircraft engine was built to model and simulate the fuel system. The study shows the thermal interactions between the fuel and engine lubrication oil through the mission profile of a high bypass ratio, two-spool turbofan engine. Fuel temperature was monitored as it flowed through each sub-component of the fuel system during the mission. The heat load in the fuel system strongly depended on the fuel flow rate, and was significantly increased for the periods of cruise and descent with decrease of fuel flow rate, rather than for the periods of take-off. Due to the thermal interaction in the pump housing, the fuel temperature at the outlet of the low-pressure pump was increased (4.0, 9.2, and 30.0) % over the case without thermal interaction for take-off, cruise, and descent, respectively.
Jet impinging device is designed for decay heat removal on horizontal fuel rods in a low temperature heating reactor. An experimental system with a fuel rod simulator is established and experiments are performed to evaluate water film covering capacity, within 0.0287-0.0444 kg/ms mass flow rate, 0-164.1 kW/m2 heating flux and 13.8-91.4℃ feeding water temperature. An effective method to obtain the film coverage rate by infrared equipment is proposed. Water film flowing patterns are recoded and the film coverage rates at different circumference angles are measured. It is found the film coverage rate decreases with heating flux during single-phase convection, while increases after onset of nucleate boiling. Besides, film coverage rate is found affected by Marangoni effect and film accelerating effect, and surface wetting is significantly facilitated by bubble behavior. Based on the observed phenomenon and physical mechanism, dry-out depth and initial dry-out rate are proposed to evaluate film covering potential on a heating surface. A model to predict film coverage rate is proposed based on the data. The findings would have reliable guide and important implications for further evaluation and design of decay heat removal system of new reactors, and could be helpful for passive containment cooling research.

The combustion instability of turbulent flames is the most important problem of the gas turbine combustor. Thus improved understanding of mechanisms of combustion instability is necessary for the design and operation of gas turbine combustors. In this study, the cause of the combustion instability in a rearward-step dump combustor was investigated with respect to the fuel flow modulation; choked fuel flow, unchoked fuel flow and fully premixed mixture flow. We observed various types of combustion instabilities with respect to the change of equivalence ratio, fuel flow conditions and fuel injection location. Particularly in the unchoked fuel flow condition, it was found that the oscillation time of combustion instability is strongly related to the convection time of the fuel and that the pressure fluctuation in a lab-scale combustor is highly related to the vortex and the equivalence ratio fluctuations due to fuel flow modulation and unmixedness of the fuel and air.
The CH* chemiluminescence of premixed flames and their dependency on fuel types has been experimentally investigated on laminar methane and propane premixed flames. The measured chemiluminescence intensities are observed linearly proportional to the fuel flow rate, which could be interpreted as the CH* chemiluminescence signal is linearly proportional to the heat release rate under fuel lean conditions. The effect of equivalence ratio could be expressed by an exponential function as ${I_{CH*}}^{\propto}\;a_1\;{\exp}(b_1{\Phi})$, where $a_1\;=\;0.00054$ and $b_1\;=\;4.60$ for methane and $a_1\;=\;0.0056$ and $b_1\;=\;5.02$ for propane. Oscillating flames showed the temporal fluctuation of chemiluminescence intensity: however, the time averaged values are virtually identical to those of quiescent flames under the same fuel flow rate and equivalence ratio conditions. This observation suggests that there is no significant flame stretch effect on chemiluminescence intensity, in average values.

In this study, the electrochemical performance of a 5-layer fuel cell stack using silica composite membranes as polymer electrolyte membranes was evaluated. It was observed that the flow rate of the fuel gases plays a crucial role in stack performance, particularly being mainly dependent on the flow rate of hydrogen. Increasing the flow rate of oxygen resulted in negligible changes in performance, whereas an increase in the flow rate of hydrogen demonstrated performance improvements. However, this led to an imbalance in the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen flow rates, causing significant degradation in stack performance and durability. A decline in stack performance was also observed over time due to the degradation of stack components. This phenomenon was consistently observed in individual unit cells. Based on these findings, it was emphasized that, in addition to optimizing the performance of each component during stack operation, it is important to optimize design and operating conditions for uniform flow rate control. Lastly, the developed silica composite membrane was assessed to have sufficient performance for application in actual fuel cell systems, exhibiting a performance of over 25 W based on maximum power.

This study focuses on the performance characteristics of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) using the AC impedance technique. The experiment was carried out to investigate the optimal operating conditions of PEMFC such as cell temperature, flow rate, humidified temperature and back-pressure. The fuel cell performance was analyzed by DC electronic-loader with constant voltage mode and expressed by voltage-current density. Additionally, AC impedance was measured to analysis of ohmic and activation loss and expressed by Nyquist plot. The results showed that the cell performance increased with increase of cell temperature, air flow rate, humidified temperature and backpressure. Also, the activation loss decreased as the increase of cell temperature, air flow rate, humidified temperature and backpressure.
An experimental studies of conventional gasoline fuel pump were carried out to obtain fundamental data fur liquid phase LPG injection(LPLi) system. A regenerative type and a roller-vane type of pumps were investigated in various operational condition. The experiments were performed to obtain flow rate of LPG fuel as a function of pressure differences and temperatures. The regenerative pump had too low flow rate at some experimental conditions to use this pump system for LPLi fuel supply system. On the other hand, the roller-vane type pump can be applied to the system only if its check valve is modified. Cavitation might occur in this system which can result in system noise, flow rate variation, and pump durability problem. To solve these problems the system is needed to increase $NPSH_{re}$(required net positive suction head).
