  • For the purpose of helping development of a GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, the in-cylinder phenomena, such as the spray behaviors and fuel distributions, unburned fuel, and flame characteristics were investigated in a single cylinder GDI engine. The GDI engine was equipped with a swirl type electronic injector and SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used for the measurements of the fuel distributions. The effects of the injector specifications, such as the spray cone angle and the offset angle on the fuel distributions and combustion characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the injected fuel spray collided with the bottom of the bowl and moved upward along the exhaust side wall of the piston bowl. This fuel vapor played a important role in the instance of spark ignition. The injector specifications has a great influence on the flame characteristics.

  • In order to improve the fuel economy by design change of automatic transmission, various technologies such as increased shift stages, slip control of lock-up clutch and compact and low-weight design have been developed. And also many OEMs have developed their own ATFs as a part of these automatic transmissions. In this study, to investigate the effects of ATF characteristics on fuel economy, we got the worldwide OEM ATFs and made some reference fluids. And physical properties, frictional characteristics and fuel economy using dynamometer test for these fluids were evaluated. From the investigation, it was found that viscosities of ATFs are correlated with fuel economy in dynamometer test and reducing the viscosities made it possible to obtain fuel economy.

  • This paper present the diesel spray characteristics at different injection system parameters in a HSDI diesel engine. The spray characteristics was calculated by the coupled simulation of fuel injection system model and three-dimensional KIVA-3V code with TAB spray model. The relevant injection parameters are accumulator volume, control chamber initial volume, control orifice diameter, needle valve diameter and nozzle chamber initial volume, etc. Parametric investigation with respect to twelve relevant injection parameters showed that there was a significant advantage in varying control chamber initial volume, control chamber orifice diameter, and nozzle chamber orifice diameter with respect to effect the SMD and fuel injection speed. Consequently, in order to design the fuel injection system for spray characteristics, it seems reasonable to suppose to be optimized the fuel injection system.

  • Nuclear fuel rods are exposed to axial flow in a reactor, and flow-induced-vibration due to the flow usually causes damage in the fuel rods. Thus a prior knowledge about dynamic behavior of a fuel rod exposed to the flow condition should be provided. This paper shows that dynamic characteristics of a nuclear fuel rod depend on axial flow velocity. Assuming small lateral displacement, the effects of uniform axial flow are investigated. The analytic results show that axial flow generally reduces fuel rod stiffness and raises its damping in normal condition. Also, the critical axial velocities which make the fuel rod behavior unstable were found. That is, solving generalized eigenvalue equation of the fuel rod dynamic system, the eigenvalues with positive real part are detected. Based on the simulation results, on the other hand, it turns out that the ordinary axial flow in nuclear reactors does not affect to stability of a nuclear fuel rod even in the conservative condition.

  • The ignition characteristics in a confined axisymmetric coflow $CH_4$ jet were investigated numerically with the Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS). The $CH_4$ fuel stream was diluted with main combustion product gases, such as $O_2$, $N_2$, CO, $CO_2$, and $H_2O$, and the mixed fuel stream was heated up to the sufficient temperature where a supplying fuel stream can be ignited. For the calculation of chemical reaction in the simulation, a 2-step global finite chemistry model was considered. Boundary condition for confined wall was optimized by investigating the effects of wall temperature on the ignition characteristics of fuel stream. In addition, the effects of composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature on the ignition of fuel steam were investigated. The ignition characteristics of $CH_4$ stream with diluents were very sensitive to the wall temperature, composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature.

  • The liquid phase LPG injection (LPLi) system (the third generation technology) has been considered as one of the next generation fuel supply systems for LPG vehicles, since it has a very strong potential to accomplish the higher power, higher efficiency, and lower emission characteristics than the mixer type (the second generation technology) fuel supply system. To investigate the characteristics of LPG residue in liquid phase LPG injection system, various rubbers in LPG fuel system were reacted with LPG fuels during 3 months. The experimental results showed that the residue of a cover rubber in a fuel pump after test increased 10 times higher than that before test. Furthermore, the amount of sulfur, nitrogen species which are considered as main sources in deposit formation in the LPLi fuel injector were also found to be higher than that in original LPG fuel. And rubber properties of fuel pump cover were decreased after reaction test compared with those of the original rubber. Therefore, the rubber for fuel pump cover is not suitable for a proper material in LPLi fuel system. And these results can provide more information if a motor company shares the data of core rubber parts in field test LPLi vehicles.

  • This study was conducted to identify the pollutants generated by the fuel complex and to determine the health effects of the surrounding residents. In addition, based on the results of epidemiological surveys and health impact surveys of local residents, we analyze the distribution of patient groups and exposure characteristics according to the distance from the fuel complex boundary. Samples were collected from the briquette plant within the fuel complex and analyzed by SEM-EDXA, X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer, and ICP. In addition, the distribution of patients and exposure characteristics were analyzed according to the distance from the fuel complex and yard boundaries. Analysis of briquette samples from the fuel complex showed that the average particle size was 10-30 ㎛, the shape was irregular, and SiO2 accounted for more than 50%. It is believed that silica, which causes pneumoconiosis, may have been scattered into the air. In particular, there was a large distribution of 5 ㎛ particles that affect respiratory diseases. According to the analysis of the residential addresses and distribution of pneumoconiosis cases, many pneumoconiosis cases were located in the area between 200 and 500 meters from the boundary of the fuel complex. In addition, 28 pneumoconiosis cases were identified as a result of the epidemiological survey and health impact survey at the fuel complex. In detail, there were 8 cases of occupational pneumoconiosis, 6 cases of environmental pneumoconiosis, and 14 cases of occupational and environmental pneumoconiosis. The confirmed pneumoconiosis cases were located between 0.3 and 1.1 kilometers from the fuel complex. It was found that environmental pollutants generated by the fuel complex adversely affect the health of local residents. In particular, there are many cases of pneumoconiosis in the area between 200 and 500 meters from the boundary of the fuel complex, and this distance is considered to be the direct and indirect impact zone of the briquette plant.

  • Recently, lots of researchers have been attracted to develop various alternative fuels in diesel engine. The use of biodiesel fuel(BDF) is an effective way of substituting diesel fuel in the long run. But biodiesel fuel can affect the performance and emissions in diesel engine because it has different chemical and physical properties from diesel fuel. In this study, to investigate the combustion characteristics of biodiesel fuel as an alternative fuel for D.I. diesel engine, experiments were carried out at the three-cylinder, four stroke D.I. diesel engine with T/C. As a result, shorter ignition delays were observed for the biodiesel blend cases relative to the diesel oil. The pick value of premixed combustion for the rate of heat release is increased with decreasing C.F.W. temperature.
