  • Preparing for treatment and management of the emulsified fuel oil which will be generalized henceforth, this paper is an attempt to examine the viscosity-temperature characteristics of emulsified heavy fuel oil which is mixed with water and emulsifier in various mixture ratio by mechanical mixer. The experimental results are summarized as follows: 1. The viscosity-temperature characteristics of the emulsified C & B grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water of same or less weight, is changed according to log.log(v+0.6)=b-3.8log T. 2. The emulsifier has to be added to the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water of same or less weight, because it is instable. Especially if the emulsifier is sodium stearate, it is added more than 0.3% of the weight of oil and water. 3. In the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water and emulsifier, the higher the ratio of water addition becomes, the higher the viscosity is and the more the viscosity-temperature slope decreases. But the higher the ratio of emulsifier addition is, the more the viscosity-temperature slope increases. In this case, the linearity of viscosity-temperature characteristic curve is poorer than that of B and C grade heavy fuel oil. 4. In the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with emulsifier of 0.3% or less, the emulsion type is O/W type when water addition ratio is 40%, but it is W/O type when it is 10%, 20%, 30% and 50%.

  • DME (Dimethyl ether) is regarded as one of the candidates of alternative fuels for diesel engine, because of its higher cetane number suitable for a compression ignition engine. Also, DME is a simple chemical structure, colorless gas that is easily liquefied and transported. On the other hand, Bunker oil (JIS C heavy oil) has long been used as a basic fuel in marine diesel engines and is the lowest grade fuel oil. In this study, the combustion and emission characteristics were measured experimentally in the direct injection type diesel engine operated with DME and Bunker oil mixed fuel. From our experimental results, it is induced that DME and Bunker oil blended fuel would be an effective fuel which can reduces the concentration of harmful matter in exhaust gases.

  • Straight vegetable oil (SVO) is widely recommended as fuel for diesel engines in general and especially for marine diesel engines. However, SVOs used directly as fuel for diesel engines may cause problems for the engines; SVOs blended with diesel oil are a better choice. To widen understanding of the possibility of using blended SVOs as fuel alternatives, this paper presents results of experimental research on the combustion of blended straight vegetable oil in a marine diesel engine's cylinders. Results show that the fuel combustion process have the same curves as in simulations and, in the case of using blended fuels with up to 20% palm oil, the test diesel engine technical parameters such as engine output, exhaust gas temperatures, and specific fuel consumption are very similar to those of diesel oil (DO). Based on these results, marine diesel engines are strong potential applications and particularly recommended for the use of SVO blends.

  • Lately, our world is faced with very serious problems related to the increased air pollution of the exhaust emissions from automobiles. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engines are recognized as a main cause which strongly influence environment. Lots of researchers have attempted to develop various alternative fuels to reduce these harmful emissions in diesel engine. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the possibility of esterfied rice bran oil for diesel fuel substitution in a naturally aspirated D. 1. diesel engine, and also find means to reduce smoke emissions in esterfied rice bran oil combustion. The smoke emission of esterfied rice bran oil is reduced remarkably in comparison with commercial gas oil, that is, it was reduced approximately 58.2% at 2500rpm. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have no large differences. It was concluded that esterfied rice bran oil can utilize effectively as an alternative and renew- able fuel fur diesel engine.

  • An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the viscosity characteristics of multi-grade engine oils in which contain diesel fuels. Unused engine oils of SAE 5W40, 10W40 and 15W40 were blended with a diesel fuel ratio of 5%, 10%, and 15%. The viscosity of a diluted engine oil was measured with temperature variation ranging from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$ using a rotary viscometer. The diluted engine oil in which is blended to a diesel fuel plays an important role for decreasing an engine oil viscosity, which may decrease the oil film thickness and a load-carrying capacity. Test results show that the viscosity tends to fall for the increased temperature when engine oil is mixed with a diesel fuel. Especially, the viscosity at a low temperature zone is radically decreased compared with a high temperature zone. Based on the experimental results, the empirical equation that can predict the viscosity of diluted engine oil is expressed in the exponential function with the variation of the temperature and a fuel ratio of diluted engine oil. This equation may be possible to predict the limitation of the oil-fuel dilution rate at the concept design stage of the CDPF system, which doesn't affect the influence of the tribological components.

  • In recently, lots of researcher have been attached to develope various alternative fuels and to use renewable fuels for solution of the exhaust emission problems. In this study, the usability of used vegetable oil as alternative fuel for diesel engines has been investigated. This paper was compared with the exhaust emissions and performance in diesel engine with used vegetable oil and conventional diesel fuel. Since the vegetable oil includes oxygen of about 10%, it influenced the combustion process strongly. So, the smoke emissions of used vegetable oil were exhausted to be lower than those of diesel fuel. Also, the used vegetable oil was much the same cycle to cycle variation with diesel fuel except $P_{(dP}$d.theta.)max/, but the cycle to cycle variation of used vegetable oil was reduced significantly by preheating of the fuel and swirling of the intake air. It was concluded that used vegetable oil could be utilized effectively as renewable fuel for diesel engine.e.

  • The traditional method to calculate the gravity feed is to assume that only one tank in fuel system supplies the needed fuel to the engine, and then calculated for the single branch. Actually, all fuel tanks compete for supplying oil. Our method takes into consideration all fuel tanks and therefore, we believe, our method is intrinsically superior to traditional methods and is closer to understanding the real seriousness of the oil supply situation. Firstly, the thesis gives the mathematical model for fuel flow pipe, pump, check valve and the simulation model for fuel tank. On the basis of flow network theory and time difference method, we established a new calculation method for gravity feed oil of aeroplane fuel system, secondly. This model can solve the multiple-branch and transient process simulation of gravity feed oil. Finally, we give a numerical example for a certain type of aircraft, achieved the variations of oil level and flow mass per second of each oil tanks. In addition, we also obtained the variations of the oil pressure of the engine inlet, and predicted the maximum time that the aeroplane could fly safely under gravity feed. These variations show that our proposed method of calculations is satisfactory.

  • Harmful exhaust emissions of diesel engines are recognized as main causes of air pollution in these days. But, the direct injection diesel engine is widely used for sake of minimization on energy consumption. Because biodiesel fuel is a renewable and alternative fuel for a diesel engine, its usability is expanded. To investigate the effect of biodiesel fuel(extracted from rapeseed oil) on the characteristics of performance and exhaust emissions in an agricultural diesel engine, the biodiesel fuel derived from rapeseed oil was applied in this study. Smoke emission of esterified rapeseed oil was reduced remarkably by approximately 44.5% at 1500 rpm, full load in comparison with the commercial diesel fuel. The power, torque and brake specific energy consumption of the diesel engine showed very slight differences. It was concluded that esterified rapeseed oil could be utilized effectively as an alternative and renewable fuel for agricultural direct injection diesel engines.

  • An experimental study was conducted to evaluate characteristic variation of diluted engine oil by diesel fuel and its effects on engine components. Especially, engine oil was made to have $15\%$ fuel content. To predict existing diesel fuel content in engine oil after test was used the viscosity calibration curve. About $54\%$ percent of diesel fuel in diluted engine oil was distillated by various paths related to reciprocating motion of piston and the rest diesel fuel plays an important role for decreasing engine oil viscosity. Test results show that lowered engine ell viscosity by diesel fuel dilution become a reason of increasing engine elements wear, Therefore, this caused the quantity of blow-by gas to increase and main gallery pressure to decrease.
