The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of NOx and soot emissions under a wide range of engine loads were experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, sw irl chamber type, water-cooled diesel engine operating at three engine speeds. The purpose of this study was to develop the EGR-control system for reducing NOx and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce NOx emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal device with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system was specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The experiments were performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of 4$^{\circ}$ ATDC regardless of experimental conditions. It was found that soot emissions in exhaust gases were reduced by 20 to 70% when the scrubber was applied in the range of the experimental conditions, and that NOx emissions decreased markedly, especially at higher loads, while soot emissions increased owing to the decrease in intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and the increase in equivalence ratio as the EGR rate is elevated.

Controlled Auto Ignition(CAI) combustion has great potential in achieving significant increase in engine efficiency, while simultaneously reducing exhaust emissions. The process itself involves the auto ignition and subsequent simultaneous combustion of a premixed charge. In this study, NVO(Negative Valve Overlap) system was applied to a CAI engine in order to use residual gas. The fuel was injected directly to the cylinder under the high temperature condition resulting from heating the intake port to initiate CAI combustion. This paper introduced the valve timing strategy and experimental set-up. From this study, the effect of engine speed and valve timing on CAI combustion and exhaust emissions was clarified. In addition, stratified charge method was used to extend CAI operating region.
In this paper, the atomization characteristics of bi-swirl coaxial injectors for a 420 N-class bipropellant thruster were investigated. Three types of injectors, namely closed-type, open-type, and screw-type, were manufactured and designed to have the same spray angle and injection pressure drop. Water was used as a simulant, and cold-flow tests were conducted under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. Since the inner and outer injectors were designed to be the same type, only the inner fuel injectors that were easy to measure were used. Using a phase doppler particle analyzer, the velocity and diameter of atomized droplets were measured. Closed-type swirl injector exhibited droplet distributions with relatively high velocities and small SMD compared to the other two injectors. Open-type swirl injector formed droplets with reverse velocities in the center region and had a large recirculation zone. Screw-type swirl injector showed a sharp decrease in droplet velocity and size with radial distance from the liquid film breakup point. For the same design requirements, the closed-type swirl injector has superior atomization performance.
Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion is one of dual-fuel combustion systems which can be constructed by early diesel injection during the compression stroke to improve premixing between diesel and air. As a result, RCCI combustion promises low nitrogen oxides (NOx) and smoke emissions comparing to those of general dual-fuel combustion. For this combustion system, to meet the intensified emission regulations without emission after-treatment systems, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is necessary to reduce combustion temperature with lean premixed mixture condition. However, since EGR is supplied from the front of turbocharger system, intake pressure and the amount of fresh air supplementation are decreased as increasing EGR rate. For this reason, the effect of various EGR rates on the brake power and thermal efficiency of natural gas/diesel RCCI combustion under two different operating conditions in a 6 L compression ignition engine. Varying EGR rate would influence on the combustion characteristic and boosting condition simultaneously. For the 1,200/29 kW and 1,800 rpm/(lower than) 90 kW conditions, NOx and smoke emissions were controlled lower than the emission regulation of 'Tier-4 final' and the maximum in-cylinder pressure was 160 bar for the indurance of engine system. The results showed that under 1,200 rpm/29 kW condition, there were no changes in brake power and thermal efficiency. On the other hand, under 1,800 rpm condition, brake power and thermal efficieny were decreased from 90 to 65 kW and from 37 to 33 % respectively, because of deceasing intake pressure (from 2.3 to 1.8 bar). Therefore, it is better to supply EGR from the rear of compressor, i.e. low pressure EGR (LP-EGR) system, comparing to high pressure EGR (HP-EGR) for the improvement of RCCI power and thermal efficiency.

The aim in this study is to develop the combined EGR system with a non-thermal plasma reactor for reducing exhaust emissions and improving fuel economy in turbo intercooler ECU common-rail diesel engines. In this study, the characteristics of soot, CO and $CO_2$ emissions under four kinds of engine loads are experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, direct injection type, water-cooled turbo intercooler ECU common-rail diesel engine with a combined plasma exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) system operating at three kinds of engine speeds. The EGR and non-thermal plasma reactor system are used to reduce $NO_x$ emissions, and the non-thermal plasma reactor and turbo intercooler system are used to reduce soot and THC emissions. The plasma system is a flat-to-flat type reactor operated by a plasma power supply. The fuel is sprayed by pilot and main injections at the variable injection timing between BTDC $15^{\circ}$ and ATDC $1^{\circ}$ according to experimental conditions. It is found that soot emissions with increasing EGR rate are increased, but are decreased as the applied electrical voltage of the non-thermal plasma reactor is elevated at the same engine speed and load. Results also show that CO and $CO_2$ emissions are increased as EGR rate is elevated, and CO emissions are increased, but $CO_2$ emissions are decreased as the applied electrical voltage of the non-thermal plasma reactor is elevated at the same engine speed and load.

This paper investigated the combustion and exhaust gas characteristics of gasoline direct injection engines for various cooling water temperature. The engine-out nanoparticle emission number and size distribution were measured by a DMS-500 equipped upstream of the catalyst. A CLD-400 and an HFR-400 were equipped at the exhaust port to analyze the cyclic NOx and total hydrocarbon emission characteristics. The results showed that the nanoparticle emission number greatly increased at low coolant temperatures and that the exhaust mainly contained particulate matter of 5.10 nm. THC also increased under low temperature conditions because of fuel film on the combustion chamber. NOx emissions decreased under high temperature conditions because of the increase in internal exhaust gas recirculation. In conclusion, an engine management system control strategy for driving coolant temperature up rapidly is needed to reduce not only THC and NOx but also nanoparticle emissions.

The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of ;$NO_x$ and soot emissions under a wide range of engine load have been experimentally investigated by a water-cooled, four-cylinder, indirect injection, four cycle and marine diesel engine operating at two kinds of engine speeds. The purpose of the present study is to develop the EGR control system for reducing $NO_x$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce NOx emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal apparatus with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system which has 6 water injectors(A water injector is made up 144 nozzles with 1.0mm in diameter) is specially designed and manufactured to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines. The intake oxygen concentration obtained by the intake air flow and the oxygen concentration in the recirculated exhaust gas, and the exhaust oxygen concentration measured in exhaust manifold are used to analyse and discuss the influences of EGR on NOx and soot emissions. The experiments are performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. It is found that $NO_x$ emissions decrease and soot emissions increase owing to the drop of intake oxygen concentration and exhaust oxygen concentration as EGR rate rises. Also, one can conclude that it is sufficient for the scrubber EGR system with a novel diesel soot removal apparatus to reduce $NO_x$ emissions, but not to reduce soot emissions.

The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wear of cylinder liner piston and piston rings have been investigated by the experiment with a two-cylinder four cycle indirect injection diesel engine operating at 75% load and 1600 rpm speed For the purpose of comparison between the rates of two cylinders with and without EGR the recirculated exhaust gas is sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot among exhaust emissions is removed by an intntionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diame-ter) while only the fresh air into another cylinder. These experiments are carried out on the fuel injection at a fixed $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC timing. It is found that firstly the mean wear amount of cylinder liner with EGR is more increased in the measurement positions of the second half than of the first half and the mean wear amount without EGR is almost uniform regardless of measurement posi-tions secondly the wear rates of the first and second piston ring(compression ring)thickness with EGR are more than twice but the wear rate of oil ring thickness without EGR is more increased than that with EGR and finally the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR is a little bit increased but the piston hed diameter is rather increased owing to soot adhesion and corrosion wear and espe-cially larger with EGR.

In diesel engines, accurate EGR control is important due to its effect on nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. Conventional EGR control system comprises a PI feedback controller for tracking target air mass flow and a feedforward controller for fast response. Physically, the EGR flow is affected by EGR valve lift and thermodynamic properties of the EGR path, such as pressures and temperatures. However, the conventional feedforward control output is indirectly derived from engine operating conditions, such as engine rotational speed and fuel injection quantity. Accordingly, the conventional feedforward control action counteracts the feedback controller in certain operating conditions. In order to improve this disadvantage, in this study, we proposed feedforward EGR control algorithm based on a physical model of the EGR system. The proposed EGR control strategy was validated with a 3.0 liter common rail direct injection diesel engine equipped with a DC motor type EGR valve.
Computational flow dynamics(CFD) has been frequently applied to the waste incinerators to understand the flow performance for various design and operating parameters. Though it needs many simplifications and complicated flow models, the reasonability of its results is not fully evaluated. For example, the inlet condition is calculated from an arbitrarily assumed properties of combustion gas release from the waste bed, since the combustion in the bed is difficult to be predicted. In this study, the computational modeling and calculation procedures of CFD for the grate type waste incinerator were evaluated using comparative simulations. Though the assumption method on the generation of the combustion gas directly affected the temperature and gas species concentrations, the overall flow pattern was dominated by the secondary air jets. The gaseous reaction could be included by assuming the release of the products of incomplete combusion from the bed. However, the reaction effficiency cannot not be directly evaluated from the species concentration, since it is not possible to simulate the actual co-existence of fuel rich or oxygen rich puffs over the bed. In predicting the turbulence, the higher order model, such as Reynolds stress model, gave difference shape of local recirculation zones, but similar results was acquired from the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. Introducing radiation model was required for accurate temperature prediction, but it also caused heat imbalance due to the fixed temperature of the inlet, i.e. the waste bed. Thus, the computational modeling procedures on incinerators and the analysis of the predicted results should be progressed carefully. Though not validated experimentally, current simulation method is capable of comparative evaluation on the flow-related parameters such as the furnace shape and secondary air injection using identical inlet conditions. Quantitative analysis using measures of the residence time and mixing is essential to compare the flow performance efficiently.
