  • An experimental investigation was conducted in order to determine the flammability limit of the solid fuel ramjet using the backward facing step flow combustion of the plexiglass grain. In order to get the different step height ratio, the grain was drilled straight forward or stepwise. The Phoenics computer code was adopted in order to compare. the flow patterns of the some sample tests using a non-reacting cold turbulent flow model. The stepwise grain give some loading advantage; specially thin and long shape grain design.

Simulation of Interlinkage of Grain Boundary Gas Bubbles to Free Surfaces by the Monte Carlo Technique (몬테 카를로 기법을 이용한 결정립계 기포의 자유 공간으로의 연결 모사)

  • A method to simulate the extent of interlinkage of grain boundary gas bubbles to the free surfaces of fuel pellet was developed. With the shape of UO$_2$gain treated as tetrakaidecahedron (TKD)), the interlinked fraction of fission gas bubbles to free surfaces at grain comers was calculated as a function of the radius of grain corner bubbles by the Monte Carlo technique. In spite of two dimensional analysis, the present method shooed reasonable agreement between predicted and measured fuel swelling at the moment that complete bubble interlinkage was achieved. However, for more realistic simulation of interlinkage, grain comer bubbles should be treated three dimensionally.

  • This work is to observe combustion characteristics depending on variation of the solid propellent grain configuration. The LRE (Liquid Rocket Engine) enables adjusting the thrust by controling the required fuel mass glow, but the SRM(Solid Rocket Motor)is not easy to adjust th thrust due to the difficulty of th fuel flow control by its combustion behavior even its configuration is simple. This difficulty can be partly solved by changing th size or the configuration of the propellant grain. In this study a proper grain configuration of a small solid rocket is selected through both the theoretical design and the experimental tests.

  • In this study the regression rate of hybrid rocket fuel has been investigated by two methods. First method is to use swirl injectors for enhancement of regression rate. And second method is the modification of the helical grain deriving improvement of combustion area and generating swirl flow. Tests have been done with PMMA and gaseous oxygen. In this paper the incline angle of the helical grain was varied to find the optimal condition to obtain the max regression rate for a given operational condition.

  • The sintering behavior of UO$_2$-Gd$_2$O$_3$fuel pellets under H$_2$gas has been investigated using dilatometry and XRD methods. The addition of TiO$_2$or Al(OH)$_3$increased the density and grain size. A density of 95% TD and a grain size larger than 6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are achieved by the addition of 0.1 wt% TiO$_2$or Al(OH)$_3$. It was found that the densification of UO$_2$-Gd$_2$O$_3$pellets was suppressed in the temperature range of 1300 to 150$0^{\circ}C$, compared to UO$_2$pellets. The formation of a (U,Gd)O$_2$solid solution is the main reason for the suppression of densification. The role of TiO$_2$in densification and grain growth is discussed on the basis of the densification cuwe and ceramography.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to clarify the combustion characteristics and merge characteristics of PMMA-GOX and PE-GOX hybrid motor using multi-port fuel grain configuration. The regression rate of multi-port fuel grain is higher than the regression rate of single-port fuel grain by thermal conduction and chamber pressure. The merge of multi-port has an effect on hybrid rocket performance by change of a combustion area.

  • In this paper, the combustion characteristics of hybrid rocket fuel with tapered grain port were investigated experimentally. The charging efficiency of convergent and divergent port shape fuel with $1^{\circ}$ taper angle was 6.8% higher than that of cylindrical port shape fuel. The regression rate was increased about 17.5% by using the convergent port shape fuel. On the other hand, in case of divergent port shape fuel, no notable difference of regression rate was observed when compared to that of the cylindrical port shape fuel. In the case of convergent port shape fuel, characteristic velocity and its efficiency were notably increased with respect to cylindrical port fuel. It was found that convergent port shape of hybrid rocket fuel can lead to a better option compared to the conventional cylindrical port in terms of combustion efficiency and performance improvement.

  • Ignition test of the fuel-rich propellant coated with ignition support material in the ramjet combustor condition was conducted. Ignition delay and flame holding was measured. Fuel grain consist of HTPB mixed with AP particle 15 wt.%, Al particle 5 wt.%. To cause the short ignition delay, ignition support consist of $NC/BKNO_3$ and composite propellant was coated to the fuel grain. Ethanol blended $H_2O_2$ gas generator control the temperature, pressure, $O_2$ concentration in the oxidizer gas in the air. Gas is supplied with mass flux of $200kg/m^2s$. Through the test ignition support operated well and ignition delay of 0.6 second and the Flame was sustained.

Effects of $Nb_2O_5$, and Oxygen Potential on Sintering Behavior of $UO_2$ Fuel Pellets

  • The effects of N $b_2$ $O_{5}$ and oxygen potential on the densification and grain growth of U $O_2$ fuel have been investigated.0.3 wt% N $b_2$ $O_{5}$ -doped U $O_2$fuel pellets were sintered at 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours in sintering atmospheres which have various ratios of $H_2O$ to $H_2$ gas. Compared with those of undoped U $O_2$ pellets, the sintered density and grain size of the 0.3 wt% N $b_2$ $O_{5}$ -doped U $O_2$ pellet increase under the $H_2O$/ $H_2$ gas ratio of 5.0$\times$10$^{-3}$ to 1.0$\times$10$^{-2}$ and under the $H_2O$/ $H_2$gas ratio of 5.0$\times$10$^{-3}$ to $1.5\times$10$^{-2}$ , respectively. The sintering of U $O_2$fuel pellets containing 0.1 wt% to 0.5 wt% N $b_2$ $O_{5}$ was carried out at 168$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The enhancing effect of N $b_2$ $O_{5}$ on the sintered density and grain size becomes larger as the N $b_2$ $O_{5}$ content increases. The solubility limit of N $b_2$ $O_{5}$ in U $O_{2}$ seems to be between 0.3 wt% and 0.5 wt%, and beyond the solubility limit the second phase whose composition corresponds near to N $b_2$U $O_{6}$ is precipitated on grain boundary. The enhancement of densification and grain growth in U $O_2$ is attributed to the increased concentration of a uranium vacancy which is formed by the interstitial N $b^{4+}$ ion in the U $O_2$ lattice.

Mechanism of Environmentally-Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zr-Alloys

  • Iodine-induced stress corrosion cracking (ISCC) properties and the associated ISCC process of Zircaloy-4 and an Nb-containing advanced nuclear fuel cladding were evaluated. An internal pressurization test with a pre-cracked specimen was performed with a stress-relieved (SR) or recrystallized (RX) microstructure at $350^{\circ}C$, in an iodine environment. The results showed that the $K_{ISCC}$ of the SR and RX Zircaloy-4 claddings were 3.3 and 4.8MPa\;m^{0.5}, respectively. And the crack propagation rate of the RX Zircaloy-4 was 10 times lower than that of the SR one. The chemical effect of iodine on the crack propagation rate was very high, which was increased $10^4$ times by iodine addition. Main factor affecting on the micro-crack nucleation was a pitting formation and its agglomeration along the grain boundary. However, this pitting formation on the grain-boundary was suppressed in the case of an Nb addition, which resulted in an increase of the ISCC resistance when compared to Zircaloy-4. Crack initiation and propagation mechanisms of fuel claddings were proposed by a grain boundary pitting model and a pitting assisted slip cleavage model and they showed reasonable results.
