A nuclear fuel test loop (after below, FTL) is installed in IR1 of an irradiation hole in HANARO for testing neutron irradiation characteristics and thermo hydraulic characteristics of a fuel loaded in a light water power reactor (PWR) or a heavy water power reactor (CANDU). There is an in-pile section (IPS) and an out-pile section (OPS) in this test loop. When HANARO is normally operated, the fuel loaded in the IPS has a nuclear reaction heat generated by a neutron irradiation. To remove the generated heat and to maintain an operation condition of the test fuel, a main cooling water system (MCWS) is installed in the OPS of the FTL. The pump can not continuously suck a fluid and not pressurize the fluid during a cold function test. To verify the flow characteristics of the MCWS, a flow net work analysis has been conducted. When the higher elevation pipelines wholly filled with coolant, it was confirmed through the analysis results that the pump pressurized the coolant normally. And the analysis results described the system characteristics with operation temperature and pressure variation satisfactorily.
The probability density functions (PDF) of temperature were measured by coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) in flames of gas turbine combustor sector rig of an aero-engine. The combustor was operated at simulated ground idle conditions with standard kerosene fuel. Temperature PDFs had been measured near fuel nozzle with change of rotation of a swirler and existence of a prefilmer. The characteristic features of temperature PDFs showed the variation of combustion configurations at four experimental conditions. Without a prefilmer, large recirculation of high temperature gas was expected in the co-flow condition and un vaporized fuel fragments were detected in the counter-flow condition. With a prefilmer, the enhanced mixing increased combustion intensity near fuel nozzle in the counter-flow condition and the flame was attached far from the fuel nozzle in the co-flow condition.

Currently, BLDC fuel pump was applied on LPi vehicle using 3rd fuel supply system as liquified phase LPG injection method had already shown better performance than others. Its cost, however, is rather expensive because of drawbacks such as complicated structure, a fault of localization of system. In this work, demonstration system for a developed turbine type fuel pump to replace BLDC system was setup and investigated. This study results that fuel mass flow rate of turbine type pump and injection performance of injector were better compared to BLDC type. Comparing flow rate of summer LPG with that of winter LPG, the flow rate decreased about 25% using winter LPG. Performance applying turbine type LPi fuel pump to engine is confirmed.

A micro cyclone combustor was developed to be used as a heat source of thermoelectric power generator (TPG). The cyclone combustor was designed so that fuel and air were supplied to the combustion chamber separately. The mixing and flow characteristics in the combustor were investigated numerically. The global equivalence ratio ($\Phi$), defined using the fuel and air flow rates, was introduced to examine the flow features of the combustor. The mixing of fuel and air inside the combustor could be well understood using the fuel concentration distribution. It was found that the weak recirculating zone was formed upper the fuel-supplying tube in case of ${\Phi}$<1.0. In addition, it was found that small regions that have a negative axial velocity exist near the fuel injection ports. It is assumed that these negative axial velocity regions can stabilize a flame inside the micro cyclone combustor.
The effects of anode, cathode, and cooling channels for a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) on flow fields have been investigated numerically. Continuous open-faced fluid flow channels formed in the surface of the bipolar plates traverse the central area of the plate surface in a plurality of passes such as a serpentine manner. The pressure distributions and velocity profiles of the hydrogen, air and water channels on bipolar plates of the PEMFC are analyzed using a two-dimensional simulation. The conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy in the three-dimensional flow solver are modified to include electro-chemical characteristics of the fuel cell. In our three-dimensional numerical simulations, the operation of electro-chemical in Membrane Electrolyte Assembly (MEA) is assumed to be steady-state, involving multi-species. Supplied gases are consumed by chemical reaction. The distributions of oxygen and hydrogen concentration with constant humidity are calculated. The concentration of hydrogen is the highest at the center region of the active area, while the concentration of oxygen is the highest at the inlet region. The flow and thermal profiles are evaluated to determine the flow patterns of gas supplied and cooling plates for an optimal fuel cell stack design.
The characteristics of turbulent flow and mixing in a small can type combustor are investigated by means of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Attention is paid for a combustor having a baffle plate with oxidant injection and fuel injection holes and study is made for three cases of different baffle plate configurations. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by interaction between the jets during their developing process and large vortical flows generated in the vicinity of the combustor wall or fuel jet front. This particular flow feature is effective to accelerate the slow mixing between fuel and oxidant suffering from low Reynolds number condition in such a small combustor. In particular, the vortical flow region ahead of fuel jet plays an important role for rapid mixing. Discussion is made for the time and space averaged turbulent flow and scalar quantities which show peculiar characteristics corresponding to different vortical flow structures for each baffle plate shapes.
This study investigates the enhancement of the oxygen diffusion rate in the cathode channel of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by pure oscillating flow, which is the same as the mechanism of human breathe. Three-dimensional numerical simulation, which has the full model of the fuel cell including electrochemical reaction, ion and electronic conduction, mass transfer and thermal variation and so on, is performed to show the phenomena in the channel at the case of a steady state. This model could analysis the oscillating flow as a moving mesh calculation coupled with electrochemical reaction on the catalyst layer, however, it needs a lot of calculation time for each case. The two dimensional numerical simulation has carried on for the study of oscillating flow effect in the cathode channel of PEMFC in order to reduce the calculation time. This study shows the diffusion rate of the oxygen increased and the emission rate of the water vapor increased in the channel by oscillating flow without any forced flow.

GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines are considered as one of the candidates for next generation engines of passenger cars, which reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. In GOI engines, a high-pressure gasoline supply system is required to directly inject the fuel to combustion chambers. Because of low lubricity of gasoline fuel, the clearance between a plunger and a barrel in GDI fuel pumps is too wide to achieve smooth hydrodynamic lubrication. Thus, it is difficult to generate high-pressure condition in GDI fuel pump since large amount of leakage flow occurs between the plunger and the barrel In this study, an optimum plunger design is presented to minimize leakage in the aspect of flow control. This paper analyzes leakage flow characteristics in the clearance to improve pumping performance of GDI fuel pumps. Effects of groove in the plunger are studied according to variations of depth and width. Evaluations of pumping performance are determined by the amount of pressure drop in the leakage path assuming a constant leakage flows. Both of turbulence and incompressible models are introduced in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. Design parameters have been introduced to minimize leakage in limited space, and a methodological study on geometrical optimization has been conducted. As results of CFD analysis in various geometrical cases, optimum groove depths have been found to generate maximum sealing effects on gasoline fuel between the plunger and the barrel. This procedure offers a methodological way of an enhancement of plunger design for high-pressure GDI fuel pumps.
To identify the flow characteristics of the SMART reactor, a flow distribution model test and a numerical simulation are performed in KAERI. Among several part of the SMART reactor, the fuel assemblies are simulated using simulators because of the complexity. The geometries of the core in the SMART reactor and simulator are different, but some similarities are maintained such as the ratio of pressure drop in the vertical and cross directions. There are cross flow holes in each core simulator to reproduce the cross flow of SMART fuel assemblies. To know the flow characteristics of the cross flow, numerical analysis is performed. As the cross flow area is decreased, the pressure drop between inlet and outlet is decreased. Also, when the flow imbalance between two core simulators is constant, the cross flow area does not significantly affect the cross flow.
Many studies have been conducted to increase regression rate of solid fuel in hybrid rocket. One of them resorts to swirl flow since it can extend the residence time of oxidizer in the fuel grain. Also, metal wires may lead to increase the regression rate of solid fuel as shown in solid propellants. In this study, a series of experiments was designed to investigate the enhancement of regression rate of solid fuel by embedded metal wires and by fuel port grain. And fuel port was designed with a helical configuration to attempt to induce swirl flow. PMMA with gaseous oxygen is the solid fuel used for investigation. Test results showed that embedded metal wires turned out to be ineffective method because only $3-4\%$ increases in regression rate were observed. However, fuel port grain configuration yields higher burning performance of up to $50\%$ increase in regression rate. Also pitch number as well as total impulse was found to be a design variable.
