This study was conducted to develop an index of fuel consumption to rate agricultural tractors by their fuel efficiencies. The fuel consumption index consisted of two components: basic and operational indexes. The basic index is to consider an average amount of fuel consumed by engine when it transmits 20 and 100% of the rated power. The operational index is to consider the fuel consumed by tractor for typical field operations: plowing, rotavating, and the remains. The equations and procedures to obtain these indexes were proposed. The method and fuel consumption rate to classify tractors into 5 grades were also proposed. The best 15% of the tractor models were rated as the first grade, 20% as the second grade, 30% as the third grade, 20% as the fourth grade, and 15% as the fifth grade in order of fuel efficiency. Using the fuel consumption index, the classification was conducted on 143 tractor models tested at the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering from 2000 to 2007. The proposed 5-grade system of classification using the fuel consumption index could be used to rate the fuel efficiency of 20-100 kW tractor models produced over past 10 years in Korea.

With increases in international oil prices, the proportion of fuel cost to the operational costs of a ship is currently increasing. To reduce fuel cost, a method for determining an economical route for a ship based on the acquisition of the sea state and the estimation of fuel consumption is proposed. The proposed method consists of three items. The first item is to acquire the sea state information in real time. The second item is to estimate the fuel consumption of a ship according to the sea state. The last item is to find an economical route for minimal fuel consumption based on the previous two items. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, it was applied to routing problems in various ocean areas. The result shows that the proposed method can yield economical ship routes that minimize fuel consumption. The results of this study can contribute to energy savings for environmentally friendly ships.
This paper aims at finding out the optimum operating condition to reduce fuel consumption for the training ship Pusan 402 with controllable pitch propeller. For this purpose, this paper examints the variation of ship speed and fuel consumption in accordance with the change of engine revolution and propeller pitch. The results obtained are as follows: 1. When engine revolution is constant, the ship speed sluggishly increases according to the increase of propeller pitch but fuel consumption extremely increases. The higher revolution the engine is, the more remarkable this tendency is. 2. As the engine revolution becomes lower, the fuel consumption per mile decreases. Howt.er = the fuel consumption under the same engine revolution differs according to the propeller pitch. 3. Specific fuel consumption is uniformed about 180g/ps.h at any case of load. 4. Among the various operating conditions which yield the same ship speed, fuel consumption lowers in the case of lower engine revolution and larger propeller pitch.
A mathematical model was developed to predict the fuel consumption rate consumed by agricultural tractors under arbitrary loaded conditions. The model utilizes the measured data on the fuel consumptions at the full load and at the rated engine speed with partial loads, which can easily be obtained from the official OECD tractor test reports. It was found from the analysis of the measured fuel consumption data that the fuel consumptions at two different speeds does not change with power. The model was developed based on this fact and validated with the measured data of the 159 tractor test reports. The fuel consumptions predicted by the model were compared with those measured under the partially loaded conditions specified in the official OECD tractor test code II. The percent errors of the predicted fuel consumptions were in a range from 0.36 to 2.86% which assured that the developed fuel consumption model can be used practically to predict the fuel consumptions at any speed and power combinations. It was also shown that the developed model predicts the fuel consumption rate better than the Grisso's model.
As global warming becoming an environmentally serious issue, more attention is drawn to fuel consumption which is the direct source of green house gas emission. The fuel consumption by aircraft operation is not an exception. Motivated by the societal and environmental context, this paper explains a method for estimation of aircraft fuel consumed during their flights as well as the computational process using real flight track data. Applying so-called 'Total Energy Model' along with aircraft specific parameters provided in EUROCONTROL's Base of Aircraft Data (BADA) to aircraft radar track data, we estimate fuel consumption of individual aircraft flown between Gimpo and Jeju airports. We then assess the estimation accuracy by comparing the estimated fuel consumption with the actual one collected from an airline. The computational results are quite encouraging in that the method is able to estimate the actual fuel consumption within ${\pm}6{\sim}11%$ of error margin. The limitations and possible enhancements of the method are also discussed.
Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles (FCHVs) have become a major topic of interest in the automotive industry owing to recent energy supply and environmental problems. Several types of power management strategies have been developed to improve the fuel economy of FCHVs including optimal control strategy based on optimal control theory, rule-based strategy, and equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS). The ECMS is applied in this study. This strategy is based on the heuristic concept that the usage of the electric energy can be exchanged to equivalent fuel consumption. This strategy is known as one of the promising solutions for real-time control of hybrid vehicles. The ECMS for an FCHV is introduced in this paper as well as the equivalent fuel consumption parameter. The relationship between the battery final state of charge (SOC) and the fuel consumption while changing the equivalent fuel consumption parameter is obtained for three different driving cycles. The function of the equivalent fuel consumption parameter is also discussed.
In this paper, we established a prediction model of fuel consumption at the aircraft's taxi operation. To look for countermeasures to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, Airbus A380's actual ground taxi data was used. As a result, the number of stops or turnings during the taxi operation was not related to fuel consumption. It was confirmed that the amount of fuel consumption in the taxi operation was the taxi time and the thrust change. It can be confirmed that ground control optimization, which is the result of close cooperation between the control organization and the airline, is absolutely necessary to reduce taxi time and minimize the occurrence of thrust change events.
To measure the fuel consumption rate of a vehicle, a car is tested on chassis dynamometer following given driving mode. But the fuel consumption rate measured by this method may be somewhat different from that measured in on-road driving conditions. It may be due to not considering road grade in driving modes. In this study, new driving modes which include road grade are proposed, and the simulation program to estimate the real driving fuel consumption rate of a vehicle is developed. On-road car tests to verify the simulation program are carried out and the results of the simulation are analysed and compared with those of the experiments.

Miller cycle was studied and analyzed by engine performance simulation to achieve very low fuel consumption and to meet the IMO NOx regulation on a medium speed diesel engine. Based on the performance simulation results the intake valve closing time for HYUNDAI HiMSEN 6H21/32 engine was set at 0deg.ABDC(After Bottom Dead Center). Also, the simulation results indicated that significant NOx reduction could be achieved with low reduction of fuel consumption. The performance simulation investigated the effect of compression ratio and turbocharger on fuel consumption and NOx concentration in combination with Miller cycle. The results indicated a significant reduction of fuel consumption with keeping NOx concentration. The results of performance simulation were compared with measured data to verify simulation results. The comparison showed the maximum error was 2.34% in exhaust temperature. Also, the experimental result showed that improvement in BSFC(Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) was 5.8g/kwh with keeping NOx level similar to simulation result.

The effects of fuel injection nozzle hole on the NOx emission and fuel oil consumption of medium speed diesel engine HYUNDAI HiMSEN 6H21/32 engine are investigated by engine performance simulation. The results of performance simulation are verified by experimental results of NOx omission fuel oil consumption, cylinder pressure, and heat release rate according to the variation of the number of fuel injection nozzle hole and engine load. The performance simulations are also carried out to optimize the fuel injection nozzle of 6H21/32 engine in respect to the NOx emission and fuel oil consumption. The engine performance measurements are performed to verify the results of performance simulation and to investigate the effects of fuel injection nozzle on engine performance. The results of measurement indicate that significant NOx reduction can be achieved with minimum deterioration in fuel oil consumption by optimizing the geometry of fuel injection nozzle on 6H21/32 engine.
