  • As environmental friendly energy system, distributed micro gasturbine is focused on new energy source for overcoming brand new construction area of power generation. This distributed micro gasturbine system has the powerful characteristics as belows; 1) environmental friendly features NOx < 9 ppm, noise < 65 db 2) various fuel flexbility which is used such as natural gas, diesel, low calory new & renewable fuel, kerosene. 3) high specific output power based on small area and is avilable for very easy and compact installation. There are many new installation sites in USA and Japan from 1998. On the other hand the exhisting large power system was constructued by the sea side, this compact power system is now installed by enduser in downtown area and supplying combined heat & power, has the various apllication on-site power generation. In recently, there is the very important issue for new & reliablbe energy development and spreading out. This paper represent as belows for important system characteristics; 1) grid connection modeling 2) system operation characteristics 3) on-site operation result and evaluation output of power quality analysis.

  • 고분자 전해질형 연료전지에서는 수소이온의 이온전도성 저하를 방지하기 위하여 외부에서 가습하여 주는 방식이 일반적이지만, 가습에 소요되는 부품을 일부라도 제거할 경우 연료전지의 효율은 높이고 제작단가도 경감할 수 있다. 이를 위하여 저가습 및 무가습 실험을 수행하였으며, 정확한 data의 수집과 시험장비의 자동제어를 위하여 National Instrument사의 compact field point (cFP)를 사용하였다. 무가습 실험 중 stack의 안정성 측면을 고려하기 위하여 수소연료가 부족하거나 갑작스런 voltage drop이 발생할 경우 LabVIEW logic에 의한 stack 보호용 자동차단 시스템을 구현하였다. Humidifier와 heater의 온도를 조절하여 공급유체의 상대습도 및 온도를 각각 조절하였으며, 이에 필요한 이론적 온도는 Antoine equation을 사용하여 산정하였다. Anode와 cathode 양측 $100\%$ 가습 경우를 기준으로 가습량을 조절하면서 실험을 수행하였으며 성능 차이를 그래프로 도시하여 양측의 변화에 대한 영향을 볼 수 있도록 하였다. Stack의 온도가 $70^{\circ}C$이고 양측 무가습일 경우에 성능 측정이 불가능하여 stack의 온도를 저온에서부터 변화시키면서 무가습 성능을 실시간으로 측정하여 보았다 일반적으로 hydronium ion은 anode측에서 cathode측으로 계속 이동하여야 전기를 생성할 수 있으므로 cathode측 무가습이 anode측 무가습보다 성능이 더 잘 나오는 것으로 예측하였으나 이와 반대되는 경향의 실험 결과를 얻었다. Anode측 무가습과 cathode측 무가습의 standard deviation은 anode 무가습일 경우가 크게 발생하였고 양측 무가습일 경우는 stack의 온도가 높을수록 크게 관찰되었다. 이와 같은 현상은 공기중의 상대습도와 back diffusion등에 영향을 받을 수 있으므로 각종 변수들의 영향을 분리하여 관찰할 수 있는 실험을 수행중에 있다.

Investigation of Direct and Mediated Electron Transfer of Laccase-Based Biocathode

  • Enzymatic fuel cells are promising low cost, compact and flexible energy resources. The basis of enzymatic fuel cells is transfer of electron from enzyme to the electrode surface and vice versa. Electron transfer is done either by direct or mediated electron transfer (DET/MET), each one having its own advantages and disadvantages. In this study, the DET and MET of laccase-based biocathodes are compared with each other. The DET of laccase enzyme has been studied using two methods; assemble of needle-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the electrode, and CNTs/Nafion polymer. MET of laccase enzyme also is done by use of ceramic electrode containing, ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis [3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid]) /sol-gel. Cyclic voltammetric results of DET showed a pair of well-defined redox peaks at $200{\mu}A$ and $170{\mu}A$ in a solution containing 5and $10{\mu}M$ o-dianisidine as a substrate for needle-like assembled CNTs and CNTs-Nafion composite respectively. In MET method using sol-gel/ABTS, the maximum redox peak was $14{\mu}A$ in the presence of 15 M solution o-dianisidine as substrate. The cyclic voltammetric results showed that laccase immobilization on needle-like assembled CNTs or CNTs-Nafion is more efficient than the sol-gel/ABTS electrode. Therefore, the expressed methods can be used to fabricate biocathode of biofuel cells or laccase based biosensors.

  • In this work, a nano-sized samaria-doped ceria(SDC) was prepared by a urea-based hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, FESEM and TEM. It was observed that the increase in synthesis time and temperature gave rise to crystallity and particles size. Moreover, the synthesised powders had a excellent ion-conductivity(0.1 S/cm at 600~$800^{\circ}C$) which is suitable for electrolyte of intermediate temperature-solid oxide fuel cell(IT-SOFC). Doubled Thrust by Boundary Layer Control in Scramjet Engines in Mach 4 and 6

  • Boundary layer ingestion in airframe-integrated scramjet engines causes engine stall (“engine un start” hereafter) and restricts engine performance. To improve the unstart characteristics in engines, boundary layer bleed and a two-staged injection of fuel were examined in Mach 4 and Mach 6 engine tests. A boundary layer bleed system consisting of a porous plate, an air coolers, a metering orifice and an ON/OFF valve, was designed for each of the engines. First, a method to determine bleed rate requirements was developed. Porous plates were designed to suck air out of the Mach 4 engine at a rate of 200 g/s and out of the Mach 6 engine at a rate of 30 g/s. Air coolers were then optimized based on the bleed airflow rates. The exhaust air temperature could be cooled below 600 K in the porous plates and the compact air coolers. The Mach 4 engine tests showed that a small bleed rate of 3% doubled the engine operating range and thrust. With the assistance of two-staged fuel injection of H2, the engine operating range was extended to Ф0.95 and the maximum thrust was tripled to 2560 N. The Mach 6 tests showed that a bleed of 30 g/s (0.6% of captured air in the engine) extended the start limit from Ф0.48 to Ф1 to deliver a maximum thrust of 2460 N.

  • Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy, which is commonly used as a biomaterial, is associated with a high elastic modulus and poor biocompatibility. This alloy presents a variety of problems on several areas. Therefore, the development of good non-toxic biocompatible biomaterials with a low elastic modulus is necessary. Particularly, hydroxyapatite (HA) is an attractive material for human tissue implantation. This material is widely used as artificial bone due to its good biocompatibility and similar composition to human bone. Many scientists have studied the fabrication of HA as a biomaterial. However, applications of bulk HA compact are hindered by the low strength of HA when it is sintered. Therefore, HA has been coated on Ti or Ti alloy to facilitate good bonding between tissue and the HA surface. However, there are many problems when doing this, such as the low bonding strength between HA and Ti due to the different thermal expansion coefficients and mechanical properties. In this study, a Ti-HA composite with a porous surface was successfully fabricated by pulse current activated sintering (PCAS) and a subsequent leaching process.

Analysis of Design and Part Load Performance of Micro Gas Turbine/Organic Rankine Cycle Combined Systems

  • This study analyzes the design and part load performance of a power generation system combining a micro gas turbine (MGT) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). Design performances of cycles adopting several different organic fluids are analyzed and compared with performance of the steam based cycle. All of the organic fluids recover greater MGT exhaust heat than the steam cycle (much lower stack temperature), but their bottoming cycle efficiencies are lower. R123 provides higher combined cycle efficiency than steam does. The efficiencies of the combined cycle with organic fluids are maximized when the turbine exhaust heat of the MGT is fully recovered at the MGT recuperator, whereas the efficiency of the combined cycle with steam shows an almost reverse trend. Since organic fluids have much higher density than steam, they allow more compact systems. The efficiency of the combined cycle, based on a MGT with 30 percent efficiency, can reach almost 40 percent. hlso, the part load operation of the combined system is analyzed. Two representative power control methods are considered and their performances are compared. The variable speed control of the MGT exhibits far better combined cycle part load efficiency than the fuel only control despite slightly lower bottoming cycle performance.

Numerical study for the characteristics of diesel spray impinging on a wall (벽에 충돌하는 디젤분무의 특성에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • It is unavoidable that the fuel spray impinges on the wall of piston cavity in a compact high-pressure D.I. diesel engine. Therefore the characteristics of impinging spray are the very significant information on the consideration and the simulation of its combustion processes including the formation mechanism of exhaust emission and the design of the combustion chamber. In this paper, the numerical simulation was performed to study the characteristics of impinging spray. The spray-wall impingement model used is Watkins and Park's model. Calculation parameters are the inclination angles and the ambient pressures. As the inclination angle increases, the impinging spray develops mainly to the direction of the downstream and scarcely flows to that of the upstream. The shape on the wall of the impinging spray is the circle in the case of the normal impingement, while it is the ellipse in that of the oblique impingement. As the ambient pressure increases, the growth of impinging spray on the wall in the radial direction decreases owing to the increase in the resistance of the ambient.

  • As a method of variable valve train(VVT), Electro-Mechanical Valve(EMV) has been studied. Compared with conventional VVT system, the EMV system has a relatively simple structure. The system has two electromagnets, springs and an armature. The system can be operated by reciprocal action between armature and two electromagnets. And, the operating event can be controlled by electrical signal from controller. Therefore, reduction of emission and fuel consumption can be achieved through valve event control at each engine operating condition. In this study, characteristics of EMV system were investigated by simulations and experiments. The results of simulation and experiment show that the core shape and material characteristics are dominant parameters on magnetic force and delay time. In order to apply the system to commercial engine, it has a compact size and high stiffness springs(50N/mm) to increase the valve speed. Because of high valve seating velocity, loud noise and high impact force generated, which can lead to reduction of actuator durability. Therefore, further research is required to reduce valve seating velocity.

  • High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying coating has been used widely throughout the last 60 years mainly in defense, aerospace, and power plants. Recently this coating technique is considered as a promising candidate for the replacement of the traditional electrolytic hard chrome plating (EHC) which pollutes the environment and causes lung cancer by toxic hexa-valent $Cr^{6+}$. In this study, two kinds of cermet coatings, WC-CoCr and WC-CrC-Ni, are formed by HVOF spraying. The wear properties of coatings are evaluated comparatively by reciprocating sliding wear tests at $25^{\circ}C$, $250^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$ respectively. Wear rates show that WC-CoCr coatings have better sliding wear resistance than WC-CrC-Ni coatings regardless of temperature due to more, compact and homogeneously distributed WC particles, less metal content, Co, Cr rich metallic bindermatrix with higher fracture strength and better adhesive strength with WC particles.
