Model for optimally dimensioned PE film bag was developed according to fruit size to maintain best quality of 'Fuyu' persimmon in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage based on relationship between quality and oxygen and carbon dioxide in PE film bag. Harvested persimmons were graded into five sizes, and average weights were LL:261, L:217, M:188, S:168, and SS:154 g. Five fruit units of each grade were optimized in five PE film bag sizes of $150{\times}376,\;140{\times}357,\;130{\times}344,\;130{\times}333,\;and\;120{\times}3l8\;mm$. To minimize quality deterioration such as softening and discoloration, optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations in PE film bag were 0.5-1.0 and 6.0-8.0%, respectively, and optimal thickness of PE film bag according to fruit size were LL:45, L:50, M:55, S:60, and $SS:65\;{\mu}m$. For all fruit sizes, model for PE film bag area $(mm^2)$ was good quadratic simple equation by fruit weight (g): $Y=-4055.707+627.993X_1-0.701{X_1}^2$. Model far optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide (Y) concentration in PE film bag was suited to linear multiple equation by fruit weight $(X_1,\;g)$ and PE film thickness $(X_2,\;{\mu}m)$. Equations for oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations (%) were $Y=5.798-0.0109X_l-0.0491X_2\;and\;Y=-2.427+0.01927X_l +0.09646X_2$, respectively.

This study is conducted to develop and optimize fruit spirits by using Schizandra chinensis fruit which are rarely used as spirits in the world. For this purpose, the raw material, main compounds of fermented mash and, quality characteristics of distilled liquor prepared with different distillation methods were analyzed. The studt period lasted six months and the results were follows. Schizandra chinensis was not suitable for alcohol fermentation because the sugar concentration and acidity were low. Therefore, the fermentation condition was appropriate to mix with the weight ratio of fresh Schizandra chinensis fruit, water and sugar as 1:1.5:0.25, and was fermented the mix by adding 0.06 w/w% of $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ compared to the must total weight. It was also examined to analyze product characteristics of fruit spirits prepared with different methods of distillation(column-pot still, pot still, vacuum still). The result showed that fruit spirits made by vacuum still with fresh Schizandra chinensis fruit indicated the best product quality while the distillation of column-pot still showed the best yield.
Pepper plants were water-logged at 0, 5, 10 and 15 cm at transplanting and flowering stages under the condition of greenhouse. Treatment of water-logging times were 6, 12, 24, 48 and 120 hours. The results obtained are summarized as follows. At the transplanting stage, plant height, number of leaves, shoot and root fresh weight decreased by water-logging at 0cm for 24 hours and at 5cm or more for 6 hours. Number of fallen leaf was negligible by 12 hours water-logging at 0cm, however, its increased by more increased the water-logging depth and time. Diffusion resistance and chlorophyll content of leaf, and root activity decreased at more than 24 hours of water-logging regardless of the water-logging depth treatments. Photosynthesis and respiration rate diminished by increased the water-logging depth at 120 hours water-logging treatment. Plant diseases, mainly anthracnose(Colletotrichum) occurred in proportion to increase the depth and time of water-logging. It was not possible to control the diseases by fungicides. At the treatment of foliar spray of urea for recovery to water-logging damage, the efficiency was not found on plant height, but the number of leaves. Number of fruit and weight of fruit per plant showed no difference from no water-logging to 24 hours water-logging at 0cm, but its decreased that more than 24 hours water-logging at 0cm and more than 6 hours water-logging at 5cm or more. The averaged weight of a fruit on survival plants increased by more hours and deeper water-logging. There was positive correlation between all the investigated characteristics of growth and yield. There was, however, negative correlation between the characteristics and diffusion resistance of leaf stomata. The correlation between number of fallen leaf and averaged weight of a fruit was not significant. At flowering stage, number of fruit and weight of fruit per plant showed a similar tendency to no water-logging and by 12 hours water-logging at 0cm and 5cm, but significantly decreased at more than 24 hours water-logging from 0 to 5cm, and more than 6 hours water-logging at 10cm or more. The averaged weight of a fruit on survival plants increased by more hours and deeper water-logging except for 120 hours water-logging at all water depths.
Two oriental melons cultivars, ‘Geumssaragi Euncheon’(GSEC) and ‘House Eunchon’(HEC), were grafted onto different rootstocks and the growth, mineral contents and fruit quality were examined. The seedlings grafted onto‘Geumtozwa’rootsticks showed about 10% defected seedling loss(wilting or dwarfing0as compared to the little or no loss in the seedlings grafted onto 'Sintozwa' or 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks. The seedings grafted onto 'Sintozwa' or 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks also exhibited better vine growth as compared to the intact seedlings or the seedlings grafted onto 'Geumtozwa' rootstocks. The fruits growth, as measured by fruits length, fruit diameter and fruit fresh weight, was accelerated by the rootstocks especially by 'Sintozwa' and 'Chamtozwa' . Intact oriental melons showed the highest soluble solids content in the fruit pericarp followed by 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks. Sucrose contents were higher in the seedling grafted onto 'Sintozwa', whereas higher glucose and fructose contents were measured in intact GSEC fruits or HEC fruits on 'Chamtozwa' rootstock. As compared to the intact plants, the seedling grafted onto 'Sintozwa' rootstock showed higher N. P and K and lower Ca and Mg contents in leaves, stems, roots and fruits. 'Geumtozwa' rootstock, developed specially for oriental melons, showed very similar pattern of mineral absorption or distribution as compared to the intact plants.
Extracts from bay leaves, Chongbaek (Allium fistulosum L.), Hutgae (Hovenia dulcis Thunb.) fruit, and green tea, using Soju (Korean alcohol, $30^{\circ}$) as a solvent were analyzed for their antioxidative properties. The eels were evenly coated with the extract concentration equivalent to 2% of their total weight and dried for 15 hours at $35^{\circ}C$ using an air blower. The DPPH radical scavenging effect, acid value and peroxide value of semi-dried eel, and linoleic acid peroxidation of eel oil were investigated. The highest level of DPPH radical scavenging was found in green tea extracts, followed by Hutgae fruit extract and bay leaves extract (p<0.05). The acid value and peroxide value of Hutgae fruit extracts coated eels refrigerated for 21 days were the lowest followed by the green tea extract coated eels. During the 20 days reaction period, all four kinds of extracts analyzed were found to effectively decrease linoleic acid peroxidation. Among them, Hutgae fruit and green tea extracts decreased the peroxide content of eel oil steadily and for a longer period when compared to other extracts. In conclusion, pre-application of Hutgae fruit and green tea extracts on eels before drying was found to be effective in delaying peroxidation in eels during the drying process and refrigeration.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate preharvest drop control in 'Tsugaru' apple with combined treatments of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and several adhesive agents. AVG+Silwet L-77 at $75+1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was most effective among the tested combinations. Little or no significant difference was observed among the different application times of AVG+Silwet L-77. AVG+Silwet L-77 significantly reduced preharvest drop while increasing fruit weight, fruit length, diameter and fruit firmness. All the tested combinations were generally effective in reducing preharvest drop as compared to dichlorprop and in maintaining better fruit quality.
This study was made to investigate the effects of soil moisture content according to irrigation methods on the storability and quality of cucumber. The fresh weight loss of cucumber fruit harvested in drip irrigation plot was more than that in conventional irrigation plot at both 13$^{\circ}C$ and 24$^{\circ}C$ storage temperature. Dry weight ratio decreased during storage, and was higher in conventional irrigation plot than drip irrigation plot both 13$^{\circ}C$ and 241 storage. The decrease of dry weight ratio was higher at 24$^{\circ}C$ than 13$^{\circ}C$. Vitamin C was not influenced by soil moisture content, but decreased during storage at 13$^{\circ}C$ and 24$^{\circ}C$ The decrease of vitamin C at 24$^{\circ}C$ in 8 days after storage was twice as much at 13$^{\circ}C$. Firmness was measured differently in two parts of cucumber ; fruit stalk and blossom part. The firmness of fruit stalk part was higher than that of blossom part. This phenomena was observed continuously at until final day at 13$^{\circ}C$ and 24$^{\circ}C$ storage. But the difference of firmness was not showed in soil moisture content. Vitamin C, firmness and other quality characteristics were not influenced by soil moisture content during cultivation. The different soil moisture content according to irrigation methods did not affect the storability and quality of cucumber.
A series of study has been conducted to develop a multi-purpose fruit grader using a black & white image processing system equipped with a 550 nm interference filter. A device and high performance algorithms were developed for sizing and color grading of Fuji apple in the previous study. In this study an emphasis was put on finding correlations between weights of several kinds of fruits and their area fractions(AF), and on compensating the blurring effect upon sizing and color grading by conveying speed of fruit. Also, the effect of orientation and direction of fruit on conveyor during image forming was analyzed to identify any difficulty (or utilizing an automatic fruit feeder. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The correlation coefficients(r) between the weights of fruits and their image sizes were 0.984~0.996 for apples, 0.983~0.990 for peachs, 0.995 for tomato, 0.986 for sweet persimmon and 0.970~0.993 for pears. 2. It was possible to grade fruits by color with the area weighted mean gray values(AWMGV) based on the mean gray valves of direct image and the compensated values of reflected image of a fruit, and also possible to sort fruits by size with AF. Accuracies in sizing and color grading ranged over 81.0% ~95.0% and 82.0% ~89.7% respectively as compared with results from sizing by electronic weight scale and grading by expert. 3. The blurring effect on the sizing and color grading depending on conveying speed was identified and regression equations were derived. 4. It was found that errors in sizing and coloring grading due to the change in direction and orientation of Fuji apple on the conveyor were not significant as far as the stem end of apple keeping upward.

Intermediate parent "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" (Malus domestica Borkh.) was released from Fruit Research Division, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Korea in 2008. It was derived from the cross between "Starkrimson" and columnar type "McIntosh Wijcik" in 1992 after selection tests from 2000 to 2008. Trees are moderately vigorous and have spreading branching habit. It bears abundant flower buds on one-year-old branches and fruits mainly on spurs or short branches. Harvesting time of this variety is late September, 7 days later than that of "Hongro" in Suwon. The fruit is conical to narrow conical in shape and bright red in skin color. Fruit size is small with weight of 200~240g on an average and fruits have $14^{\circ}Bx$ soluble solid and medium acidity. It is moderately susceptible to alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria alternata). "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" is a promising apple cultivar and will appeal to young people with good sugar-acid balance.

This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of hot water ($43-53^{\circ}C{\cdot}5min^{-1}$; $47^{\circ}C{\cdot}2-6min^{-1}$), 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) at $50-300nL\;L^{-1}$ and a combination of hot water ($47/49^{\circ}C{\cdot}5min^{-1}$) and phosphite $40%\;P_2O_5+20%\;K_2O$;$40%\;P_2O_5+10%\;Zn$) in anthracnose control and the effect on fruit quality [fresh weight loss (FWL-%); pH, total soluble solids ($TSS-^{\circ}Brix$), and titratable acidity (TA = % citric acid (CA)] of passion fruit ( Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa ) at the postharvest stage. When the fruits were in the stage of 0% dehydration and fully yellow peels, they were disinfested and inoculated with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. They were then subjected to the above mentioned treatments; this was followed by incubation for 120 h. The diameter of the disease lesions was monitored daily. After the incubation, a physico-chemical analysis was performed. Hot-water treatment resulted in disease reduction at 47 and $49^{\circ}C$ for 4 and 5 min. The combination of hot-water treatment at $47^{\circ}C$ (4 or 5 min) and application of the phosphite of K or Zn significantly reduced disease severity in fruits. The 1-MCP treatment reduced anthracnose severity in passion fruit mainly at $200nL\;L^{-1}{\cdot} 24h^{-1} $. None of the treatments significantly changed the physico-chemical characteristics of the fruit [FWL (2.6-4.1%); pH (3.2-3.5), TSS ($8.9-10.9^{\circ}Brix$), and TA (1.8-2.5% CA)].
