This study was carried out to know the characteristics of flowering and bearing fruit, the optimum period, regions and methods for seed harvesting, the optimum temperatures for seed storage and germination, and the optimum period for sowing at nursery bed and seedling transplanting of Valeriana fauriei Briquet. The flowering and bearing fruit of Valeriana fauriei was developed from the before-year root. Optimum period for seed harvest of Valeriana fauriei was from late July to middle August, and optimum areas were the high elevated areas over 500 m above the sea level as Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. Using of net-bag for seed harvesting was the effective method to gather the full ripe seed, and bagging of net-bag was necessary from the season of middle May that was the flowering middle-stage. Germination rates don't show the difference among the different temperatures of storage as approximately 41% at $-20^{\circ}C$, $2^{\circ}C$ or $20^{\circ}C$ of seed storage temperatures. The optimum temperature range was in $15{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ for seed germination at nursery bed. The optimum period for seed sowing at nursery bed was the late February, and the optimum period for seedling transplanting was the middle April.
'Ooishiwase' plum (Prunus salicina L.) fruits were harvested at three pre-climacteric stages of ripeness (stages 1, 2, and 3) and treated with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, $1\;{\mu}L/L$) for 24 hours at $10^{\circ}C$ before storage to evaluate the effectiveness of 1-MCP in extending shelf-life at $10^{\circ}C$. Ethylene production and respiration rates were significantly lower after 1-MCP treatment compared to those of control fruit, throughout the entire storage period. Also 1-MCP delayed plum softening and color changes. However the chemical 1-MCP had no effect on fruit soluble solid content changes, the preservative 1-MCP is an effective tool for quality improvement in plums, and extension of shelf life of the fruit and plums can safely be harvested at stage 3 of ripening, at which time the most desirable organoleptic attributes have been developed.
Postharvest dipping of vacuum infiltration treatments of 'Chojuro' pear fruit in $CaCl_2$ resulted in increased calcium content, especially in fruit peel and outer flesh such as just below peel. As $CaCl_2$ concentrations increaced from 2% to 8% in dipping treatment, calcium content became higher. But vacuum infiltration under 200-600 mmHg did not affect and dipping and vaccum infiltration did not have any difference in fruit calcium content. Decreasing of fruit firmness determined at 4 weeks during storage was slower in fruits with $CaCl_2$ treatment than control.

Black mini tomato 'Hei-G' fruits were harvested at different stages of maturity (immature-mature green and mature-black red) and stored at different temperatures (8, 12, and $20^{\circ}C$) to investigate the quality and lycopene content during storage. Weight loss increased dramatically at higher temperature for both harvesting stages without significant differences. Firmness of immature fruits decreased below the initial level of mature fruit (8.1N) after 5, 8, and 19 days storage, when they were stored at 20, 12, and $8^{\circ}C$, respectively. Soluble solid contents of mature fruit increased at initial storage, and were higher as compared to immature fruits before deterioration at each storage temperature. Decrease in titratable acid of mature fruits depended on storage time and temperature. However, titratable acid of immature fruits showed little change during storage, and so it did not affect flavor. Hunter a value changed greatly in immature fruit stored at high temperature. Unlike ripe tomatoes, there was no significant difference in black tomato Hunter b values of immature and mature fruit at initial and 12 days storage. However, immature fruits stored at $8^{\circ}C$ did not reach full maturity and color development and ripening. High storage temperature increased lycopene production while low storage temperature blocked lycopene development. Shelf life of the immature fruits, which was evaluated by elapsed days to conventional mature stage, was 12 and 15 days when they were stored at 20 and $12^{\circ}C$, respectively. The optimum storage temperature to maintain the quality and lycopene content of mature fruits was $12^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the shelf life of mature fruits stored at $20^{\circ}C$ could reach up to 5 days.

This study was carried out to compare the storability in MA storage and quality of paprika fruits among 9 cultivars grown in 2011 and 12 cultivars in 2012. 'Mosanto 7044' was the most proper cultivar in red-type paprika has grown in 2011 for MA storage, because it showed relatively higher fruit weight, firmness, soluble solid content, and the lowest ethylene production rate, as well as the second longest shelf life. 'Stayer' was suitable cultivar in yellow-type paprika cultivated in 2011, because it showed higher firmness, soluble solid content and lower ethylene production rate than other cultivars. 'Nagano' was the most proper cultivar in red-type paprika has grown in 2012 for MA storage. Because it showed relatively higher fruit weight, firmness, flesh thickness and the lowest ethylene production rate and decay ratio, although the shelf life of 'Nagano' was the third longest (28 days). 'Freestar' was the excellent cultivar in yellow-type paprika cultivated in 2012, because it showed higher firmness, vitamin C content and lower respiration rate than other cultivars and the longest shelf life of 26 days. The shelf life had a high correlationship with ethylene production rate (r = -0.5504), and soluble solid (r = 0.6112), as comparing with the shelf life and the fruit characteristics of 21 cultivars paprika has grown in 2011 and 2012.
We investigated the efficacy of heat shock treatments to improve storage quality of green red pepper. Green red pepper were stored at 10$^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks after no treatment (control) or hot water dips at 50-65$^{\circ}C$ for 10s. Treatments at 65$^{\circ}C$ generally caused high levels of heat injury on the surface of fruit. The hot water dips had no effect on firmness, Hunter ‘a’ and ‘b’ values and viable cell count by 3 weeks of storage. But color of fruit changed toward darker and redder direction and firmness was decreased by heat treatment at 4 weeks of storage. The contents of capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin were not caused significant influence by different heat treatment, were decreased through the storage. The optimal hot water dip condition for maintaining fruit quality after prolonged storage was found to be 55$^{\circ}C$ for 10s, which can lead to reduced chilling sensitivity of green red pepper.
Sweet persimmon, 'Fuyu', is the major cultivar for MA storage, but browning of blossom end part and fruit surface darkening occur during storage and decrease fruit qualities in fresh fruit market. Calcium (Ca) has a very important role in cell membrane and reduces Ca-related fruit disorder. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of soluble Ca fertigation and foliar applications on soil chemical properties, root activity, and leaf nutrient status. Ca concentration in the soil was higher in both Ca fertigation (Ca-FG) and Ca+IBA fertigation (Ca+IBA) treatments than the other treatments, such as control (Cont), Ca foliar application (Ca-FA), and IBA fertigation (IBA). The increase in soil Ca improved soil pH. The Ca+IBA treatment increased root activity. Leaf Ca concentration was significantly increased by the CA-F A application, followed by Ca+IBA, and Ca-FG treatments.
Postharvest characteristics of 'Pingguoli' fruit produced between China and Korea were compared to find an ecological difference. There was a difference in fresh weight per fruit, thus, fruit weight produced in Korea was much higher than those in China. However, no significant differences were confirmed in the level of soluble solid content and flesh firmness. The acidity of Korean 'Pingguoli' was higher than Chinese ones. The external appearance of Korean 'Pingguoli' was not attractive due to the rough and rugged surface. Thus, the prospect of 'Pingguoli' cultivation in Korea seems not to be promised. The general trend of respiration and ethylene evolution during storage did not significantly differed but the amount of $CO_2$ and ethylene production was higher in fruits produced in China. There was a strong similarity in respiration and ethylene evolution pattern to typical climacteric fruits. Thus, 'Pingguoli' is considered as a climacteric fruit. Even though the rate of ethylene production of 'Pingguoli' was relatively high, the storability of 'Pingguoli' showed a strong potential. The further studies in postharvest physiology of pear using 'Pingguoli' and in its breeding potentials as a source of long storage life are needed.
Calyx-end browning in sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki) fruits is the postharvest disorder during the storage and shows different proportions by the cultivars. This study was to evaluate fruit texture characteristics at harvest and to learn how browning in fruits affects the cell structures in different cultivars. Persimmon cultivars included 'Fuyu', 'Jiro', 'Uenishiwase', 'Daiandangam', and 'Ro-19', which were harvested at the end of October in 2003 and investigated after 100 days storage. Fruit texture varied with different cultivars. 'Jiro' and 'Ro-19' fruits did not have browning symptoms while 'Daiandangam' fruits had approximately 80% browning of them. There were no visual differences for the cell structure in fruit peels between fruits without browning, such as 'Jiro' and 'Ro-19', and fruits with browning, such as 'Fuyu', 'Uenishiwase', and 'Daiandangam'. The most outer layers in a 'Jiro' fruit peel arranged one to two epidermis which could not induce browning in the tissues, while 'Fuyu' had two to three layers, inducing a browning symptom. Although there were no differences for the tissue structure between browning and normal fruits, browning fruits did not have apparent cell organelle and proceeded degradation of cell walls in the flesh.

Oriental melon ($Cucumis$$melo$ var. $makuwa$) is a popular and high-value market fruit cultivated in Korea. Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in oriental melon as a healthy diet over the past few years. However, the melons have relatively high quality loss because the fruit are mainly produced for a limited period of time in the summer season. Lack of the proper postharvest treatments and high temperature exposure at harvest or during distribution are the most critical environmental factors limiting postharvest life of fruit. This review focuses on the overview of current research studies for postharvest treatment and functional packaging technology of oriental melon in Korea. Major physiological problems of the harvest fruit include the ripening process in quality changes of the produce such as loss of weight, firmness, flavor, and decay during the storage periods. Low temperature at 7 to $10^{\circ}C$ with high relative humidity of 90 to 95% is the suitable environmental condition used to maintain the quality of fresh oriental melon. Controlled atmosphere (CA) storage or modified atmosphere (MA) packaging can be used as supplemental treatments to extend postharvest-life. For oriental melon, an optimum CA is currently recommended to be 2-3% oxygen and 5-10% carbon dioxide atmosphere. Precooling, pretreatments of ethylene action and functional packaging system can be applied to oriental melon after harvest in order to extend storage life. Major active packaging technologies are concerned with a selectively gas permeable film related to respiration of produce and the packaging applications of ethylene removal, antimicrobial, and antifogging substances to keep the effective freshness of fruit.
