Aerodynamic shape design of a partial admission turbine using CFD has been performed. Two step approaches are adopted in this study. Firstly, two-dimensional blade shape is optimized using CFD and genetic algorithm. Initially, the turbine cascade shape is represented by four design parameters. By controlling the design parameters as variables, the non-gradient search is analyzed for obtaining the maximum efficiency. The final two-dimensional blade proved to have a more blade power than the initial blade. Secondly, the three-dimensional CFD analysis including the nozzle, rotor and stator has been conducted. To avoid a heavy computational load due to an unsteady calculation, the frozen rotor method is implemented in steady calculation. The frozen rotor method can detect a variation of the flow-field dependent upon the blade's circumferential position relative to the nozzle. It gives a better idea of wake loss mechanism starting from the lip of the nozzle than the mixing plane concept. Finally, the combination of two and three dimensional design method of the partial admission turbine in this study has proven to be a robust tool in development phase.
Conjugate heat analysis on a high pressure turbine stage including secondary flow paths has been carried out. The secondary flow paths were designed to be located in front of the nozzle and between the nozzle and rotor domains. Thermal boundary conditions such as empirical based temperature or heat transfer coefficient were specified at nozzle and rotor solid domains. To create heat transfer interface between the nozzle solid domain and the rotor fluid domain, frozen rotor with automatic pitch control was used assuming that there is little temperature variation along the circumferential direction at the nozzle solid and rotor fluid domain interface. The simulation results showed that secondary flow injected from the secondary flow path not only prevents main flow from penetrating into the secondary flow path, but also effectively cools down the nozzle and rotor surfaces. Also thermal barrier coating with different thickness was numerically implemented on the nozzle surface. The thermal barrier coating further reduces temperature gradient over the entire nozzle surface as well as the overall temperature level.

High-speed air turbine handpieces have been used as a dental cutting tool in clinical dentistry for over 50 years, but little study has been reported on their performance analysis. Therefore, the effect of turbine blade shape on performance characteristics of dental air turbine handpiece were studied using CFD in this paper. Computations have been performed for five different positions of turbine blade by using frozen rotor method that is one of steady-state method. The characteristics of turbine blade for shapes and reflection angles were analyzed. As a result of the computation, torque is increased by increasing the reflection angle of turbine blade.
A three-dimensional flow simulation was performed to investigate the wind flow around wind-power generation facilities on mountainous area of complex terrain. A digital map of eastern mountainous area of Korea including a wind farm was used to model actual complex terrain. Rotating wind turbines in the wind farm were also modeled in the computational domain with detailed geometry of blade by using the frozen rotor method. Wind direction and speed to be used as a boundary condition were taken from local meteorological reports. The numerical results showed not only details of flow distribution in the wind farm but also the variation in the performance of the wind turbines due to the installed location of the turbines on complex terrain. The wake effect of the upstream turbine on the performance of the downstream one was also examined. The methodology presented in this study may be used in selecting future wind farm site and wind turbine locations in the selected site for possible maximum power generation.

The properties of superconductor bearing are depend on shape of rotor, especially thickness of ferromagnetic shim between permanent magnets. The levitation forces and stiffness of superconductor bearings as the thickness of the ferromagnetic shim were calculated and measured, Frozen image model and difference of magnetization per unit volume of the superconductor were used to calculate stiffness for two models. The calculated values had similar trend with the measured one. From the results, an optimal design of the rotor was selected.
For designing high Tc superconductor proceeding bearing(HTSJB) which is used on a flywheel energy storage system which requests the free of the bearing loss caused by the friction, it is necessary to understand the basic characteristics of the classical superconductor proceeding bearing because the mechanical characteristics of the HTSJB are identified by the magnetic relationships between the permanent magnet(PM) and the high Tc superconductor(HTS). In this paper, using the method, frozen image model, the force problems between the PM and the HTS were solved and then the dynamic characteristics of the rotor inside of the HTSJB can be expected in advance by using the basic characteristics between the PM and the HTS. The coefficient of friction of the HTSJB was measured in the vacuum environment. From the results, the mechanical characteristics of HTSJB can be identified using the numerical models.
A turbopump turbine consists of rotational part including a rotor and stationary part including nozzles and exit guide vanes, of which shape and relative position affect turbine performance owing to supersonic flows with prevailing unsteadiness. In this study, numerical 3-D flow calculations of the turbine with the different number of exit guide vanes and different relative position of each component are conducted and the effect of flow passage variations on turbine performance is analyzed.

A three-dimensional flow simulation was performed to investigate the flow field in a wind farm on a complex terrain. The present study aims to examine the effects of mountainous terrain and turbine arrangement on the performance of wind power generation. A total of 49 wind turbines was modeled in the computational domain; detailed blade shape of the turbines was considered. Frozen rotor method was used to simulate the rotating operation. The torque acting on the turbine blades was calculated to evaluate the performance of the wind turbines. The numerical results showed details of the flow structure in the wind farm including the velocity deficit in the separated flow regions; this velocity deficit was due to the topographical effect. The effect of the wake induced by the upstream turbine on the performance of the downstream wind turbine could also be observed from the results. The methodology of the present study can be used for selecting future wind-farm sites and wind-turbine locations in a selected site to ensure maximum power generation.

The efficiency of the ventilation system is a key point for durable and reliable electric generators. The design of such system requires a detailed understanding of the air flow in the generator. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has the potential to resolve the lack of information in this field. The present work analyses the air flow inside a generator model. The model is designed using a CFD-based approach, and manufactured by taking into consideration the experimental and numerical requirements and limitations. The emphasis is on the possibility to accurately predict and experimentally measure the flow distribution inside the stator channels. A major part of the work is focused on the design of an intake and a fan that gives an evenly distributed flow with a high flow rate. The intake also serves as an accurate flowmeter. Experimental results are presented, of the total volume flow rate, the total pressure and velocity distributions. Steady-state CFD simulations are performed using the FOAM-extend CFD toolbox. The simulations are based on the multiple rotating reference frames method. The results from the frozen rotor and mixing plane rotor-stator coupling approaches are compared. It is shown that the fan design provides a sufficient flow rate for the stator channels, which is not the case without the fan or with a previous fan design. The detailed experimental and numerical results show an excellent agreement, proving that the results reliable.
This paper presents an improved estimation procedure for the contribution to no-load flux linkage created by the permanent magnet (PM) in interior permanent magnet synchronous machines. In the proposed method, the saturation effect in stator and rotor cores are taken into account by utilizing the frozen permeability method (FPM). This improved procedure can evaluate the contribution for each local element in the PM to the no-load flux linkage. According to the analysis results, an effective PM topology optimal design can be carried out to achieve high utilization ratio of PM in the machine. In order to determine the threshold of the low contribution of PM for removing, one multi-objective optimization model is proposed. Based on the optimal threshold, the final optimal topology design of PM can be achieved.
