The Segregation Potential (SP) is one of the most widely used predictors of frost heave in cold regions. Laboratory step-freezing tests determining a representative SP at the onset of the formation of the last ice lens (near the thermal steady state condition) can predict susceptibility to frost heave. Previous work has proposed empirical semi-log fitting for determination of the representative SP and applied it to several fine-grained soils, but considering only frost-susceptible soils. The presence of fines in coarse-grained soil affects frost susceptibility. Therefore, it is required to evaluate the applicability of the empirical semi-log fitting for both frost-susceptible and non-frost-susceptible soils with fines content. This paper reports laboratory frost heave tests for fines contents of 5%-70%. The frost susceptibility of soil mixtures composed of sand and silt was classified by the representative SP, and the suitability of the empirical semi-log fitting method was assessed. Combining semi-log fitting with simple laboratory frost heave testing using a temperature-controllable cell is shown to be suitable for both frost-susceptible and non-frost-susceptible soils. In addition, initially non-frost-susceptible soil became frost susceptible at a 10%-20% weight fraction of fines. This threshold fines content matched well with transitions in the engineering characteristics of both the unfrozen and frozen soil mixtures.
In this study, the following factors are investigated from experiments for a vertical parallel plate heat exchanger under the frosting condition ; the growth of frost layer, the characteristics of heat and mass transfer, the change of mass flow rate of the air passing through the heat exchanger, and the pressure drop of the air in the heat exchanger. The amount of heat and mass flux of water vapor transferred from the air stream to the heat exchanger surface is large at the early stage of frosting and then decreases dramatically, and the extent of decreasing rate becomes moderate with time. The frost layer formed near the inlet of the heat exchanger is thicker and denser than that formed near the outlet. It is found that the gradient of the amount of frost along the flow direction increases with time. In the early period of frost formation, the thermal resistance between the air and the cooling plate increases dramatically and then the extent of change decreases with time. Initially the convective thermal resistance is dominant. Then, while the convective thermal resistance decreases with time, the conductive thermal resistance continues to increase with time and finally the conductive thermal resistance becomes dominant.
A heat exchanger analysis is performed to investigate the heating characteristics of cryogenic nitrogen by ambient air for the purpose of cryogenic automotive propulsion. The heat exchanger is a concentric triple-passage for supercritical nitrogen, and the radial fins are attached on the outermost tube for the crossflow of ambient air. The temperature distribution is calculated for the nitrogen along the passage, including the real gas properties of nitrogen, the fluid convections and the conductions through the tube walls and the fins. Since the wall temperature of the outer (ambient side) tube is very low in most cases, a heavy frost can be formed on the surface, affecting the heat exchange performance. By the method of the similarity between the heat and the mass transfer of moist air, the frost growth and the time-dependent effectiveness of the heat exchanger are calculated for various operating conditions. It is concluded that the frost formation can augment the heating of nitrogen during the initial period because of the latent heat, then gradually degrades the heat exchange because of the increased thermal resistance. Practical design issues are discussed for the flow rate of nitrogen, the velocity and humidity of ambient air, and the sizes of the fin.
This work presents an analytical model, so called modified LMTD method, to predict the thermal performance of finned-tube heat exchanger under frosting conditions. In this model, the total heat transfer coefficient and effective thermal conductivity of the frost layer were defined as a function of frost surface temperature. The surface temperature of the frost layer formed on the heat exchanger was calculated through the analysis of the heat and mass transfer process in the air and frost layer. To examine the validity of this analytical model, the computed results from the present model, such as heat transfer rate, frost mass and thickness of frost, were compared with the ones of the expermental work and LMED method.
The present study measured frost pattern on a cylinder to propose empirical correlation equations for the local and average frost thickness, frost density and frost mass. The key parameters were diameter of the cylinders (7mm, 20mm), cooling surface temperature of the circular tube, absolute humidity of air, air temperature and air velocity. A 50% ethylene glycol aqueous solution was applied as a coolant. The frost thicknesses at both front and rear were larger than those at the other parts, while they were increased as diameter of the cylinder was increased. The local frost thicknesses at high air velocity were more uniform than those at low air velocity. The values predicted by Kim et al. under the freezer condition showed larger by the maximum of $30{\sim}50%$ than the measured data under heat pump condition. The empirical correlations for the local and average frost thickness and frost mass were proposed. The correlation equations for the frost thickness and frost mass under the heat pump condition in the present study might predict more accurate than the other correlation equations. The proposed correlations might be applied for the freezer condition within the maximum 15% deviation from the previous correlations under freezer condition.
The integral boundary layer equation for the air side and the diffusion equation for the frost layer are numerically analyzed in order to predict the behavior of frost layer growth. The thickness and density of the frost layer obtained from the present study agree well with those of previous numerical results and experimental data with a maximum error of 13%. The characteristics of heat and mass transfer within the frost layer and the frost layer growth along the flow direction are investigated by performing numerical analysis. The effects of operating conditions on the frost layer growth are also examined.
In this study, the experiment with 2rows-2columns fin-tube heat exchanger under forced convection and frosting condition is performed. The influence of each operating condition(the temperature of air, the humidity of air, the velocity of air, the temperature of coolant) on the growth of frost layer, air-side pressure drop, and characteristics of heat transfer is investigated. The experimental results show that the frost thickness increases rapidly in the early stage of frost formation and increases linearly after sometime. The frost thickness increases with the increase of the inlet air humidity and velocity and the decrease of inlet air temperature and coolant temperature. It is also found that the total energy transfer rate increases with the increase of inlet air temperature and velocity and with the decrease of inlet air humidity and coolant temperature.
This paper presents the effects of the fin array and pitch on the frost layer growth of a heat exchanger. The numerical results are compared with experimental data of a cold plate to validate the present model, and agree well with experimental data within a maximum error of 8%. The characteristics of the frost formation on staggered fin array are somewhat different from those of in-line array. The frost layer at the first fin of the in-line array grows rapidly, compared to second fin, whereas the difference of the frost layer growth between the fins of the staggered array is small. For fin pitch below 10 mm, the frost layer growth of second fin in the staggered array is affected by that of first fin. The frost layer growth and heat transfer of single fin deteriorate with decreasing fin pitch regardless of fin array, however, the thermal performance of a heat exchanger, considering increase of heat surface area, becomes better.
Since liquefied natural gas (LNG) is imported in a liquid state of about -162℃ to increase transportation efficiency in Korea, it must be vaporized in a gaseous state to supply it to consumers. Among them, ambient air vaporizer (AAV) has caught attention due to eco-friendly and low costs characteristics. However, there is a disadvantage that the performance of the heat exchanger is deteriorated due to frost due to mist and icing when used for a long time. In this paper, frost generation model in AAV vaporizer was investigated with numerically to examine utilizing the vaporizer performance with the frost generation behavior. The frost generation behavior of AAV vaporizers was examined with humidity, fin characteristic, and temperature effects. As for the LNG discharge temperature, the 12 fin vaporizer showed the highest discharge temperature when the atmospheric temperature was 25℃, and the 8 fin vaporizer had the lowest LNG discharge temperature when the atmospheric temperature was 0℃. In the case of frost formation, in the case of the 12 fin vaporizer, it was formed the most at the atmospheric temperature of 25℃, and the least was formed in the vaporizer at the 0℃ condition of the atmospheric temperature of 8 fins.

Frost ring formed in the secondary xylem of Pinus radiata was examined using various microscopic techniques. Cell walls in a frost ring were poorly developed, lacking in the proportion of wall components. Formation of secondary cell wall was imperfect and thickness of secondary wall was varied. Cytochemical examinations provided the evidence that the synthesis of structural polysaccharides and lignin was inhibited, resulting in the malformation of secondary cell walls. Judging by the highly irregular nature of the cell wall, it appears that cellulosic/hemicellulosic framework was affected and the template for lignification by frost.
