Although the accelerators are used at the early stage to control setting-time and strength of concrete when cold-weather concrete is utilized, no security of workability occurs because the early hydration makes them react rapidly. Therefore, the tablet used in previous study is applied in this study. In particular, because a small amount of fly-ash being replaced in cold weather concrete of domestic, fly-ash concrete incorporating the tablet is discussed in workability by elapsed time, early strength to ensure the development of adequate strength, and freezing-thawing resistance. As a result, both 0.5 and 1.0% tablets were found to be superior. Thus, it was verified in cold weather concrete incorporating fly-ash that workability can be secured, as well as the development of early strength to prevent early frost.
Isolation, indentification, bioassay and distribution of ice nucleation active(INA) bacteria were done on branch rot of mulberry which was severely developed after harvest of mulberry branches in autumn. Twelve isolates and two isolates out of thirty-six isolates had ice nucleation activity from -5$^{\circ}C$ to -1$0^{\circ}C$, and over -5$^{\circ}C$, respercively. Isolates which formed ice nucleation from -5$^{\circ}C$ to -1$0^{\circ}C$ were not inclined to injure tomato and corn seedlings. However, Two isolates, SE9316 and SE9338 which formed ice nucleation over -5$^{\circ}C$ injured mulberry, tomato and corn seedlings. SE9316 and SE9338 were identified as Pseudomonas syringae based on the morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics. Populations of ice nucleation active bacteria, fluorecent pseudomonads, were higer in February and April, but they decreased in May. Populations decreased as they become distant from the center of the symptom. The bacterial populations of all sampling times and sites were higer than 105 cfu/g which was enough to induce frost injury.
In this study, we have investigated monthly changes in temperature extremes in South Korea for the past (1921~2010) and the future (2011~2100). We used seven stations' (Gangneung, Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, Jeonju, Busan, Mokpo) data from KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) for the past. For the future we used the closest grid point values to observations from the RCP8.5 scenario of 1 km resolution. The Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI)'s climate extreme indices were employed to quantify the characteristics of temperature extremes change. Temperature extreme indices in summer have increased while those in winter have decreased in the past. The extreme indices are expected to change more rapidly in the future than in the past. The number of frost days (FD) is projected to decrease in the future, and the occurrence period will be shortened by two months at the end of the $21^{st}$ century (2071~2100) compared to the present (1981~2010). The number of hot days (HD) is projected to increase in the future, and the occurrence period is projected to lengthen by two months at the end of the $21^{st}$ century compared to the present. The annual highest temperature and its fluctuation is expected to increase. Accordingly, the heat damage is also expected to increase. The result of this study can be used as an information on damage prevention measures due to temperature extreme events.

Water pipes manufactured using existing Portland cement suffer from the problem of rapid deterioration and reduced durability due to the hydration product of cement being vulnerable to acids. Therefore, in this study, water pipes were manufactured using slag and fly ash, which are industrial by-products from various industries, and their characteristics were analyzed. As a result of the experiment, slump in unhardened concrete tended to increase due to the ball bearing action of fly ash, and the amount of air was reduced due to unburned coal, indicating that measures for frost resistance were needed. In addition, the initial strength of the compressive strength was increased through steam curing, and the results were equal to or better than OPC when mixing more than 50 % of slag. The acid resistance results showed that the mass reduction rate was less than 5 %, showing excellent durability performance, and the bending failure load of the water pipe also exceeded the KS standards, so it is judged to be commercializable.
The mechanical properties and durability of concrete pavements may be degraded in extreme situations, resulting in the need for partial repair or total replacement. During the past few decades, there has been a growing body of research on substituting a portion of Portland cement with alternative cementitious materials for improving concrete properties. In this study, two different configurations of powdered and granulated blast furnace slag were implemented, replacing fine aggregates (by 12 wt.%) and Portland cement (by 0, 20, 40, and 60 wt.%) in the making of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) mixes. The specimens were fabricated to investigate the mechanical properties and durability specifications, involving freeze-thaw, salt-scaling, and water absorption resistance. The experimental results indicated that the optimum mechanical properties of RCC mixes could be achieved when 20-40 wt.% of powdered slag was added to concrete mixes containing slag aggregates. Accordingly, the increases in compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths were 45, 50, and 28%, in comparison to the control specimen at the age of 90 days. Also, incorporating 60 wt.% of powdered slag gave rise to the optimum mix plan in terms of freeze-thaw resistance such that a negligible strength degradation was experienced after 300 cycles. In addition, the optimal moisture content of the proposed RCC mixtures was measured to be in the range of 5 to 6.56%. Furthermore, the partial addition of granulated slag was found to be more advantageous than using entirely natural sand in the improvement of the mechanical and durability characteristics of all mixture plans.
Due to the latitudinal location of Korea, the seasonally frozen ground has been focused on as research topics such as the frost heaving under the asphalt road rather than the permafrost ground. However, the recent construction of the second Korean Antarctic research station, the Jangbogo station and the participation on the development of the natural gas pipeline in Russia arouse the research interests on the behavior of the permafrost ground. At the design process of the geotechnical structures on the permafrost ground, the evaluation of the creep characteristics of the frozen soil is very crucial. Since the domestic specification on the frozen soil testing does not exist currently, it is necessary to evaluate the creep characteristics of frozen soils systematically with regard to the affecting factors. Therefore, the creep characteristics of the frozen specimens of dense Jumoonjin sand were evaluated under various loads at -5 and $-10^{\circ}C$. Based on the test results, as the load became close to the strength and the temperature became lower, the duration of the secondary creep became shorter and more distinct tertiary creep responses were observed.
For finding out the proper method of developing Buxus koreana var. insularis, this study was carried out in Pokil-Do, Wan-Do, Chonnam, in 1975. The ecology, morphology and characteristics of the plant were mainly investigated and analyzed. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The small islands of the southern sea of Korea; Pokil-Do, Chin-Do and So-Huk-San-Do, turn out to be the site of the natural communities of B. koreana var. insularis. 2. The growth of the plant is fairly good in the acid soil of these islands. 3. This vegetation of composed as the three-layered communities, these communities consit of Camellia, Buxus and Cares. 4. The plant is a board leaved evergreen shrub that is tolerant to shade and native to the temperate zone. 5. The size of the leaves, fruits and seeds is slightly larger than those of B. koreans. 6. As fruiting and germination of the seeds are favorable. it is easy for us to make a number of seedlings. 7. The proper times for sowing and harvesting the seeds are around the middle of July and August, respectively. 8. The seedlings is difficult to grow in the naked ground because the germinated seeds are seriously damaged by frost. 9. The plant growth per annum is about 8 to 10cm in height, 1.5mm in diameter. It is graceful looking as the branches and leaves as of the dense foliage type 10. It is possible to develop the plant in many ways, such as; ornamental plant, bee plant, sculptural and industrial materials.
The spatial characteristics of changes in extreme temperature indices for 2070-2099 relative to 1971-2000 in the Republic of Korea were investigated using daily maximum (Tmax) and minimum (Tmin) temperature data from a regional climate model (HadGEM3-RA) based on the IPCC RCP4.5/8.5 at 12.5km grid spacing and observations. Six temperature-based indices were selected to consider the frequency and intensity of extreme temperature events. For validation during the reference period (1971-2000), the simulated Tmax and Tmin distributions reasonably reproduce annual and seasonal characteristics not only for the relative probability but also the variation range. In the future (2070-2099), the occurrence of summer days (SD) and tropical nights (TR) is projected to be more frequent in the entire region while the occurrence of ice days (ID) and frost days (FD) is likely to decrease. The increase of averaged Tmax above 95th percentile (TX95) and Tmin below 5th percentile (TN5) is also projected. These changes are more pronounced under RCP8.5 scenario than RCP4.5. The changes in extreme temperature indices except for FD show significant correlations with altitude, and the changes in ID, TR, and TN5 also show significant correlations with latitude. The mountainous regions are projected to be more influenced by an increase of low extreme temperature than low altitude while the southern coast is likely to be more influenced by an increase of tropical nights.

In Korea, the average air temperature has been elevated twice faster than the average global warming. And the climate warming is characterized by the smaller rise of air temperature in summer and the greater rise of air temperature in spring and winter. Therefore, the number of frost-free days to determine the cultivation ability of crops has increased by more than 15 days in 10 years according to climate warming. This climate warming trend has extended and is projected to extend not only the sweet potato growing season but also the sweet potato early cultivating area to higher altitude and latitude region. This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of sweet potato double cropping in the southern island area of Korea by assessing the growth and yield performance of sweet potato cultivated at extremely-early and -late time. We had performed at Yokji Island Yokji Island($E128^{\circ}$ 18' $N34^{\circ}$ 36'), a representative specified complex area of sweet potato cultivation in southern Korea. As the test varieties, the major cultivars of the this region, Shinyulmi and early hypertrophic cultivars, Dahomi were used. The prior cropping were planted with PE film mulching on March 30 and April 10, and harvested after 110 days. So the succeeding cropping were planted without PE film mulching on July 25 and August 5 according to the harvesting time of the prior sweet potato and harvested after 120 days. As a control, it was harvested on September 15, 120 days after planted on May 15. Each experimental plot had an area of 12 square meters consisting of 4 beds, and was planted one at a time at intervals of 25cm. We had investigated growth characteristics - main vine length, node number, branch number, total vine yield, and tuberous root characteristics - tuberous root number, average weight, starch value, and etc. After harvesting, we analyzed the economic effects by examining the postharvest quantity, the input labor, the management cost, and the income. The total yield of marketable products in prior and succeeding cropping was 46~70% higher than that of control. The average unit price of sweet potato was 36% higher than the conventional culture, and the gross income increased by 98%, but the operating cost increased by 83%, and the farm income increased by 103%. There are considerations such as the difficulty of enlargement of cultivation area due to lack of labor in limited space and the need for watering measures due to spring drought. However, if the area of application for sweet potatoes double system is increased by 10%, it can be used as a new cropping system.
