The following results were obtained from a series of studies to accumulate data to reduce the coefficient of friction for press dies by performing tribological tests before and after the UNSM treatment of SM45C. The UNSM-treated material had a nano-size surface texture, high surface hardness, and large and deep compressive residual stress formation. Even when the load was doubled, the small amount of abrasion, small weight of the abrasion, and width and depth of the abrasion did not increase as much as those for untreated materials. When loads of 5 N, 7.5 N, and 10 N were applied to the untreated material of SM45C, the coefficient of friction was approximately 0.76-0.78. With the large specimen, a value of 0.72-0.78 was maintained at a load of 50 N despite the differences in the size of the wear specimen and working load. Tribological tests of large specimens of SM45C treated with UNSM under tribological conditions of 100 N and 50 N showed that the frictional coefficient and time constant stably converged between 0.7 and 0.8. The friction coefficients of the small specimens treated with UNSM showed values between 0.78 and 0.75 under 5 N, 7.5 N, and 10 N. The friction coefficients of the SM45C treated with UNSM were comparable to each other.

Ice crushing occurs in many situations that involve a sliding frictional component such as sports involving ice-contact, ice interaction with ship hulls, and ice-on-ice sliding/crushing within glaciers and between interacting sea ice floes. Ice crushing-friction tests were conducted in the lab at $-10^{\circ}C$ using a set of acrylic ice-crushing platens that included a flat smooth surface and a variety of high-roughness surfaces with regular arrays of small prominences. The experiments were part of Phase II tests of the Blade Runners technology for reducing ice-induced vibration. Ice was crushed against the platens where the ice movement had both a vertical and a horizontal component. High-speed imaging through the platens was used to observe the ice contact zone as it evolved during the tests. Vertical crushing rates were in the range 10-30 mm/s and the horizontal sliding rates were in the range 4.14-30 mm/s. Three types of freshwater ice were used. Friction coefficients were extraordinarily low and were proportional to the ratio of the tangential sliding rate and the normal crushing rate. For the rough surfaces all of the friction coefficient variation was determined by the fluid dynamics of a slurry that flowed through channels that developed between leeward-facing facets of the prominences and the moving ice. The slurry originated from a highly-lubricating self-generating squeeze film of ice particles and melt located between the encroaching intact ice and the surfaces.
Model material technique, which requires only the small space of experimental set-up and low cost for experiment, is used to estimate the deformed profile and the forging load in rotary forging. The materials and working conditions are determined to satisfy the similitude conditions between the model test and the prototype test. The model material of the so-called plasticine and the mild steel are chosen as specimens, and they represent almost the same value of strain gardening exponent in the stress-strain relationship. Lubricant in the model test is also carefully selected so that it gives the same frictional conditions at the tool-specimen interface. Experiments for two kinds of specimens are carried out in each testing equipment at room temperatue. From the experiments the deformed dimensions and the forging loads are measured and compared with each other by using the simulation coefficients. It is shown that there are good agreements between the model test and the prototype test. Finally, for verifying the availability of the model material technique this mathod is applied to forging of bevel gear product. the good result is obained which can demonstrate that the model material technique is very efficent for estimating or developing a new process.
This paper describes a reliability characteristics of an air foil journal bearing for high speed turbomachinery at room temperature. To verify the reliability of air foil journal bearing, lift-off characteristics, load carrying capacity, and 10,000 cycle start-stop test were performed with motor driven test rig. Lift-off test shows the relationship between the rotating speed of the shaft and the frictional torque with bearing surface. About load carrying capacity, the tested air foil journal bearing produced a load capacity of 500N at an operating speed of 15,000rpm, which is compared with results of numerical analysis and empirical coefficients. Finally, The trends in change of start torque, stop torque, and bearing temperature were shown during 10,000 cycle start-stop test of an air foil journal bearing. from the results of this work, an air foil bearing will be done well, as a supported bearing for high speed turbo-compressor.

The 3-D FEM analysis for simulating the stamping operation of planar anisotropic sheet metals with arbitrarily-shaped tools is introduced. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation with a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive equation is employed. Contact and friction are considered through the mesh-normal, which compatibly describes arbitrary tool surfaces and FEM meshes without depending on the explicit spatial derivatives of tool surfaces. The consistent full set of governing relations, comprising equilibrium equation and mesh-normal geometric constraints, is appropriately linearized. The linear triangular elements are used for depicting the formed sheet, based on membrane approximation. Barlat's non-quadratic anisotropic yield criterion(strain-rate potential) is employed, whose in-plane anisotropic properties are taken into account with anisotropic coefficients and non-quadratic function parameter. The planar anisotropic finite element formulation is tested with the numerical simulations of the stamping of an automotive hood inner panel and the drawing of a hemispherical punch. The in-plane anisotropic effects on the formability of both mild steel and aluminum alloy sheet metals are examined.
Wear and scuffing tests were conducted using friction and wear measurement of piston rings and cylinder blocks in low friction diesel engine. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing in boundary lubricated sliding condition were measured using the reciprocating wear tester. The cylinder blocks were used as reciprocating specimens, and the piston rings with several coatings were used as fixed pin. Several coatings were used such as DLC, TiN, Cr-ceramic and TiAlN in order to improve the tribological characteristics. From the tests wear volume of piston ring surfaces applied various coatings were compared. During the tests coefficients of friction were monitored. Test results showed that DLC coatings showed good tribological properties. TiN and Cr-ceramic coated rings showed good wear resistance properties but produced high friction.

Experimental and numerical analysis on the heat transfer behaviors and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with two inclined perforated baffles($\;5^{\circ}$) mounted on the bottom plate has been systematically performed. The parametric effects of perforated baffles (3, 6, 9 holes) and flow Reynolds number on heat transfer characteristics of the heated target surface are explored. A combination of two baffles of same overall size was considered and the flow Reynolds number for this study is varied between 28,900 and 61,800. Comparisons of the experimental data with the numerical results by commercial code CFX 5.7 are made. As for the investigation of heat transfer behaviors on local Nusselt number with the two baffles installed at $x/D_h=0.8\;and\;x/D_h=8.0$, it is evident that there exist an optimum perforation density to maximize heat transfer coefficients; i.e., the maximum Nusselt number decreases with increasing number of holes.
The friction and wear of mild steel at dry sliding surfaces under different vacuum conditions have been investigated to understand the wear mechanisms. For the test, a ball-ondisk typed wear-rig has been built and implemented, allowing control of sliding speed, load and vacuum. Results show that, at a high sliding velocity, friction of low carbon steel (SS41) under a high vacuum is much higher than that of ambient condition and wear is much severer. It is due to lack of effective oxidation film formation on which steel surfaces could protect themselves against the severe wear. It has been shown, however, that there is a critical regime with contact conditions (at a low sliding velocity, a low load, and under a medium vacuum) at which effective, protective films of low carbon steel have been built on the surfaces in a friction process with a self-regulating way, resulting in both very low coefficients of friction (about 0.3) and mild wear. In order to investigate the protective films on steel surfaces, the worn surfaces and the wear debris have been experimentally analyzed with SEM, AES/SAM and XRD. A theoretical analysis of frictional heating at sliding surfaces, and an experimental analysis of the influence of oxidation wear under various vacuum conditions are described. The important variables on which self-formations of protective films at dry sliding surfaces depend, and the wear mechanisms are also investigated.
The wear resistance of P-bronze which is widely used as worm gear material was investigated. In order 1o study the effect of additional elements on the wear resistance of Pbronze, the applied load and sliding time were selected as variables, and SCM4, were used as against metal. The addition of Fe improve wear resistance, for it precipities hard Fe$_3$ P phase and the work hardening coefficients are lowered due to decreasing solubility of P. When Fe is added in conventional P-bronze, the alloy is rather sliding than forming wear debris by frictional force during wear test. Experimental results indicated that the wear mechanisms for P-bronze are mainly consisted of abrasive wear due to Beilby layer forming mechanism and adhesive wear due to thermally activated wear mechanism. Moreover, the weight loss is decreased in accordance with increasing load and time. However the rate of wear loss is decreased as the sliding time is increased.
