A numerical procedure for optimizing the shape of three-dimensional channel with V-shaped ribs extruded on both walls has been carried out to enhance the turbulent heat transfer. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-stoked analysis. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss-related terms with a weighting factor. Three dimensionless variables such as, rib pitch-to-rib height ratio, rib height-to-channel height ratio, and the attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. Nineteen training points obtained by D-optimal designs for three design variables construct a reliable response surface. In the sensitivity analysis, it is found that the objective function is most sensitive to the ratio of rib height-to-channel height ratio. And, optimal values of design variables have been obtained in a range of the weighting factor.

A numerical optimization procedure for the shape of three-dimensional channel with angled ribs mounted on one of the walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer is presented. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analyses of flow and heat transfer. SST turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for local heat transfer rate show reasonable agreements with experimental data. The pitch-to-height ratio of the rib and rib height-to-channel height ratio are set to be 9.0 and 0.1, respectively, and width-to-rib height ratio and attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. Full-factorial experimental design method is used to determine the data points. Optimum shapes of the channel have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

A numerical optimization has been carried out to determine the shape of the three-dimensional channel with oblique ribs attached on both walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Numerical results fur heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data. four dimensionless variables such as, rib pitch-to-rib height ratio, rib height-to-channel height ratio, streamwise rib distance on opposite wall to rib pitch ratio, and the attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related coefficients with a weighting factor. D-optimal method is used to determine the training points as a means of design of experiment. Sensitivity of the objective parameters to each design variable has been analyzed. And, optimal values of the design variables have been obtained in a range of the weighting factor.
A numerical study is performed to investigate the effect of inner surface roughness and micro-particles on adiabatic single phase frictional pressure drop in a perfect square micro channel. With the variation of particles sizes (0.1 to $1{\mu}m$) and occupied volume ratio (0.01 to 10%) by particles, the Eulerian multi-phase model is applied to a $100{\mu}m$ hydraulic diameter perfect square micro channel in laminar flow region. Frictional pressure loss is affected significantly by particle size than occupied volume ratio by particles. The particle properties like density and coefficient of restitution are investigated with various particle materials and the density of particle is found as an influential factor. Roughness effect on pressure drop in the micro channel is investigated with the consideration of roughness height, pitch, and distribution. Additionally, the combination effect by particles and surface roughness are simulated. The pressure loss in microchannel with 2.5% relative roughness surface can be increased more than 20% by the addition of $0.5{\mu}m$ diameter particles.

We trace the cosmological origin of satellites around isolated dwarf galaxies using a very high resolution (12 pc/h) cosmological hydrodynamic zoom simulation. To realistically describe the formation and evolution of small-mass stellar satellites, our model includes a full baryonic physics treatment. We find that the mini-halos form objects resembling dwarf galaxies. The majority of their star forming gas is accreted after reionization, thus the survival of a mini-halo's gas to reionization is not an important factor. Instead, the key factor seems to be the ability for a mini-halo to cool its recently accreted gas, which is more efficient in more massive halos. Although the host galaxy is only a dwarf galaxy itself, we find that ram pressure is an efficient means by which accreted mini-halos lose their gas content, both by interacting with hot halo gas but also in direct collisions with the gas disk of the host. The satellites are also disrupted by the tidal forces near the center of the host galaxy. Compared to the disrupted satellites, surviving satellites are relatively more massive, but tend to infall later into the host galaxy, thus reducing the time they are subjected to destructive environmental mechanisms and dynamical friction.

In this study, the two-dimensional crack problem was investigated by using the finite element method (FEM)-based ANSYS package program and the artificial neural network (ANN)-based multilayer perceptron (MLP) method. For this purpose, a half-infinite functionally graded (FG) layer with a crack pressed through two rigid blocks was analyzed using FEM and ANN. Mass forces and friction were neglected in the solution. To control the validity of the crack problem model exercised, the acquired results were compared with a study in the literature. In addition, FEM and ANN results were checked using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2), and a well agreement was found. Numerical solutions were made considering different geometric parameters and material properties. The stress intensity factor (SIF) was examined for these values, and the results were presented. Consequently, it is concluded that the considered non-dimensional quantities have a noteworthy influence on the SIF. Also FEM and ANN can be logical alternative methods to time-consuming analytical solutions if used correctly.

This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.

This study presents the behavior of unsteady saline wedge in which it is examined velocity profile variations at the lower layer (inner wedge) and wedge tip responses to a tidal action in a rectangular open channel. Unsteady saline wedge has just tidal excursions corresponding to tidal amplitudes at the river mouth, although two wedge tips in flood and ebb tide remarkably have different shapes. Maximum velocities at the lower layer appear immediately from high water to low water level (or low to high water). Numerical computation results obtained by only just interfacial friction factor at the steady state show satisfactory agreements with experimental data. However, the numerical model on one-demensional two-layer flor still has some problems to date.

In the present work, shape of the mixing vane in Plus7 fuel assembly has been optimized numerically using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model is used as a turbulence closure. The Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as a combination of heat transfer rate and inverse of friction loss. Bend angle and base length of mixing vane are selected as design variables. Thermal-hydraulic performances for different shapes of mixing vane have been discussed, and optimum shape has been obtained as a function of weighting factor in the objective function.

A method is presented to calculate the fiction factor and velocity distribution of asymmetric flow in rough channels and annuli. This method is derived from an assumption of linearly-varying shear stress which is different from Maubach's constant shear stress assumption. This method gives continuous velocity gradient at the position of maximum velocity and the predicted velocity profiles are in better agreements with experimental data than those obtained by Maubach's method. In this paper, a new correlation of roughness function is proposed and the predictions of friction factors by this correlation agree well with experimental data.
