  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used for imaging surfaces and measuring surface forces at the nano-scale. Force calibration is important for the quantitative measurement of forces at the nano-scale using AFM. Normal force calibration is relatively straightforward, whereas the lateral force calibration is more complicated since the lateral stiffness of the cantilever is often comparable to the contact stiffness. In this work, the lateral force calibrations of the rectangular cantilever were performed using torsional Sader's method, thermal noise method, and wedge calibration method. The lateral optical lever sensitivity for the thermal noise method was determined from the friction loop under various normal forces as well. Experimental results showed that the discrepancies among the results of the different methods were as large as 30% due to the effect of the contact stiffness on the lateral force calibration of the cantilever used in this work. After correction for the effect of contact stiffness, all the calibration results agreed with each other, within experimental uncertainties.

  • In the case of an elevated railway station, structure borne noise and vibration due to structural limitations allow the load and vibration from railway vehicles to be directly transmitted to the station structure, resulting in an increase in the number of civil complaints from customers and staff of the station. The floating slab track system, which is well known as one of the solutions for reducing the noise and vibration from elevated railway stations, usually contains rubber mounts or rubber pads under the railway slab which act as a damper. These types of device have the disadvantage that is difficult to predetermine the exact stiffness and damping ratio under the nonlinear loads resulting from train services. In this study, an isolator with a friction type of wedge is introduced, which can be applied to floating slab track systems and to be designed with precisely the required stiffness. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the stiffness between the designed and experimental values is carried out, while the damping ratio, which is closely related to the friction wedge blocks, is deduced according to the train load condition. The performance tests of the isolator were conducted in accordance with the DIN 45673-7 standard which includes both static and dynamic load tests. The load conditions for the performance tests are designed to conform to the DIN standard related to the weight of the train and rail track, in order to perform vertical and horizontal load tests, so as to ensure the secure structural safety of the railway. Also, by checking the change aspect of the friction coefficients of the friction elements according to the loading rate, the vibration reduction performance of the friction type isolator with variable loading rate conditions is examined.

  • In this study, a standard section of a railway bridge abutment wall was designed to satisfy the external stability condition in accordance with the design criteria; this design was used to compare and analyze the active earth pressure and to calculate various types of earth pressure acting on the virtual back (wall, plane) according to the frictional angle of the backfill materials. Also, the external stability, member force and construction cost were analyzed according to the frictional angle of the backfill materials using various theories of earth pressure such as Rankine, Coulomb, Trial Wedge, and Improved Trial Wedge. As for the results, it was found that lateral earth pressure at the virtual back plane was higher than at the virtual back wall, and that these values decreased with the increase of the frictional angle of the backfill materials. The increasing of the frictional angle of the backfill materials decreased the active earth pressure (according to Rankine, Coulomb, Trial Wedge, and Improved Trial Wedge results), and the member force as well as the construction cost were reduced.

  • This paper is to investigate collapse mechanisms of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics)composite tubes and to evaluate collapse characteristics on the change of interlaiminar number and ply orientation angle of outer under static and impact axial compression loads. When a CFRP composite tube is crushed, static/impact energy is consumed by friction between the loading plate and the splayed fronds of the tube, by fracture of the fibers, matrix and their interface. These are associated with the energy absorption capability. In general, CFRP tube with 6 interlaminar number(C-type), absorbed more energy than other tubes(A, B, D-types). The maximum collapse load seemed to increase as the interlaminar number of such tubes increases. The collapse mode depended upon orientation angle of outer of CFRP tubes and loading status(static/impact). Typical collapse modes of CFRP tubes are wedge collapse mode, splaying collapse mode and fragmentation collapse mode. The wedge collapse mode was shown in case of CFRP tubes with 0° orientation angle of outer under static and impact loadings. The splaying collapse mode was shown in only case of CFRP tubes with 90°orientation angle of outer under static loadings, however in Impact tests those were collapsed in fragmentation mode .

  • Calculating the seismic displacement of retaining walls has an important role in the optimum design of these structures. Also, studying the effect of surcharge is important for the calculation of active pressure as well as permanent displacements of the wall. In this regard, some researchers have investigated active pressure; but, unfortunately, there are few investigations on the seismic displacement of retaining walls with surcharge. In this research, using limit analysis and upper bound theorem, permanent seismic displacement of retaining walls with surcharge was analyzed for sliding and overturning failure mechanisms. Thus, a new formulation was presented for calculating yield acceleration, critical angle of failure wedge, and permanent displacement of retaining walls with surcharge. Also, effects of surcharge, its location and other factors such as height of the wall and internal friction angle of soil on the amount of seismic displacements were investigated. Finally, designing charts were presented for calculating yield acceleration coefficient and angle of failure wedge.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the improvement method of MOV(Motor Operated Valve) operability without major modification or change of MOV which needs a great expense and manpower. We studied valve stem lubrication, stem packing thrust and actuator control switch which could give an major effect to MOV operability, and found the some consequences. First, the stem/stem-nut friction coefficient and stem factor is significantly effected by stem lubrication state. Second, the measured packing thrust value is appeared higer than the design value for tested valves and the preparation of optimal value selection criteria is needed. Finally, optimization of MOV control switch is another major factor for MOV operability and structual integrity.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates can be used more efficiently in strengthening applications by applying prestress to the CFRP laminates. A key problem for prestressing with CFRP laminates is anchoring the laminates. These may include fracture to the CFRP laminates due to excessive gripping force or slippage of the CFRP laminates out of the anchorage zone caused by low friction between the anchor device and the lamiantes. The main objective of this study is the development of an applicative wedge-type anchorage system for prestressed CFRP laminates through experimental study. The experimental parameters were the type of anchorage and the effect of elastic modulus of tab. The test results showed that the developed anchor assures 100% CFRP laminate strength.

  • In this study theories of earth pressure such as Rankine, Coulomb, Trial Wedge, Improved Trial Wedge, used in the design for onshore and offshore structures, are analyzed and the characteristics of loaded pressure to virtual back (wall, plane) and wall surface in accordance with the structure type are suggested. To investigate characteristics of earth pressure, gravity retaining wall with inclined angle and cantilever wall with inclined ground are movilized for onshore structures and caisson and block type quay wall are mobilized for offshore structures. Based on various theories, the earth pressure applied angle(wall friction angle) and sliding angle toward the wall, which is influenced by the heel length, are calculated and compared. In the case of long heel, the pressure by Rankine's method in virtual plane and the mobilized angle are most reasonably estimated by the ground slope, and in the case of short heel, the pressure by Coulomb's method and the mobilized angle by the angle of wall friction. In addition, the sliding angle toward the wall estimated by the improved trial wedge method is large than the value of Rankine's method. Finally, in this study the reasonable method for calculating the pressure and the mobilized angle that can be applied to the routine design of port structures is proposed. The proposed method can decide the earth pressure with length of a heel and a self weight of retaining wall according to sliding angle toward the wall.

  • In this study, in order to design a wedge-type anchor that can hold an wide carbon plate with a width of 100 mm or more that can be used in a bridge structure, the mechanical behaviors are evaluated based on the main design variables such as the angle of the wedge and the coefficient of friction between the guide and the wedge. The stress state of the carbon plate was calculated by numerical analysis method for each design variable, and the performance of the anchor in the critical state was evaluated according to the failure criteria for composite material, and the optimal design specifications of the anchor were determined based on numerical results. The performance of the optimally designed anchor was verified through actual experiments, and the results of this study are considered to be useful for the optimal design of the CFRP plate anchor to reinforce large structures.

  • The effect of the rib angle-of-attack on heat transfer in the convergent channel with ${\vee}/{\wedge}$-shaped ribs was examined experimentally. Four differently angled ribs (a = $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$) were placed to only the one sided wall. The ribbed wall was manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) of 10 mm and rib spacing (p)-to-height (e) ratio of 10. The convergent channel had a length of 1,000 mm and a cross-sectional areas of $100mm{\times}100mm$ at inlet and $50mm{\times}100mm$ at exit. The measurement was conducted for the Reynolds numbers ranging from 22,000 to 75,000. The results show that the Nusselt number is generally higher at higher Reynolds number and that an angle-of-attack of $45^{\circ}$ at the ${\wedge}$-shaped rib produces the greatest Nusselt number.
