Cu-Matrix sintered brake pads and low alloyed heat resistance steel are most applied to basic brake system for high energy moving machine. In this research, we analyzed tribological characteristics for influence of air velocity between disk and pad. At low brake pressure with air flow, friction stability was decreased due to no formation of tribofilm at disk surface. But there are no significant change of friction coefficient at all test conditions. Wear rate of friction materials were decreased with increasing of air flow velocity. In result, air flow velocity influenced friction stability, wear rate of friction materials and disk but not friction coefficient.
Cu-matrix sintered brake pads and low-alloy heat-resistant steel are commonly applied to basic brake systems in high-energy moving machines. In this research, we analyzed the tribological characteristics to determine the influence of the air velocity between the disk and pad. At a low brake pressure with airflow, the friction stability was decreased as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficient under any of the test conditions. The wear rates of the friction materials were decreased with an increase in the airflow velocity. As a result, the airflow velocity influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of the friction materials and disk, but not the friction coefficient.

A simultaneous measurement of the wall skin friction and near-wall streamwise velocity fluctuations is performed using hot film and hot wire anemometers to investigate the relation between them. Near-wall turbulence statistics measured with a hot-wire probe are in good agreement with previous results. Turbulence properties of the wall skin friction fluctuations measured with a hot film also show fairly good agreements with those measured by others except that rms level is lower in the present study. Long-time averaged space- time correlations show that the wall skin friction is highly correlated with a turbulence structure which is tilted from the wall in the streamwise direction. Tilting angles are obtained from the phase shifts between the wall skin-friction and streamwise velocity fluctuations. The convection velocity of the near-wall streamwise velocity obtained from the space-time correlation is in good agreement with that from the direct numerical simulation database.
An internal friction model was developed to model the frictional behavior of automotive Constant Velocity (CV) joints by using the test data from an instrumented CV joint friction apparatus with actual driveshaft assemblies. Experiments were conduced under different realistic operating conditions of oscillatory speeds, CV joint articulation angles, lubrication, and torque. The experimental data were used to develop a physics-based semi-empirical CV joint internal friction coefficient model as a function of different CV Joint operating parameters. It was found that the proposed friction model captures the experimental results well not only the static behavior of friction coefficient, but also the dynamic friction terms, which is the main source of force that causes vehicle vibration problems.
A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate if two different age groups(young vs. old) had differences in walking velocity and heel contact velocity and, furthermore, if these gait characteristics could adversely influence initial friction demand characteristics(i.e. RCOF) and the likelihood of slip-initiation. Twenty eight(14 younger and 14 older adults) participated in the study. While wearing a safety harness, all participants walked at their preferred gait speed for approximately 20 minutes on the linear walking track(1.5m× 20m) consisting of two floor-mounted forced plates. During subsequent 20 cameras, respectively. The results indicated that older adults walked slower(i.e., slower whole body center-of-mass velocity), exhibited lower heel contact velocity, and produced lower initial friction demand characteristics (i.e. RCOF) in comparison to younger adults. However, ANCOVA indicated that the diferences in heel contact velocity between the two age groups were due to the effects of walking velocity. The bivariate analysis further suggested that walking velocity was correlated to RCOF and heel contact velocity, while heel contact velocity was not found to be correlated to RCOF. In conclusion, could be a better indicator for predicting initial friction demand characteristics(i.e. RCOF) not hel contact velocity.
This paper presents the analysis of friction master curves for a sliding elastomer on rough granite. The hysteresis friction is calculated using an analytical model that considers the energy spent during the local deformation of the rubber due to surface asperities. The adhesion friction is also considered for dry friction prediction. The viscoelastic modulus of the rubber compound and the large-strain effective modulus are obtained from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). We accurately demonstrate the large strain of rubber that contacts with road substrate using the GW theory. We found that the rubber block deforms approximately to 40% strain. In addition, the viscoelastic master curve considering nonlinearity (at 40% strain) is derived based on the above finding. As viscoelasticity strongly depends on temperature, it can be assumed that the influence of velocity on friction is connected to the viscoelastic shift factors gained from DMA using the time-temperature superposition. In this study, we apply these shift factors to measure friction on dry granite over a velocity range for various temperatures. The measurements are compared to simulated hysteresis and adhesion friction using the Kluppel friction theory. Although friction results in the low-speed band match well with the simulation results, there are differences in the predicted and experimental results as the velocity increases. Thus, additional research is required for a more precise explanation of the viscoelastic material properties for better prediction of rubber friction characteristics.

The brake squeal propensity due to the friction-velocity curve is numerically investigated. The finite element models for the disc and pad are correlated with the modal test. In the friction-engaged system modeling, the friction function is linearized at the equilibrium. The damping term induced by friction-velocity slope is incorporated into the equations of motion. In the complex eigenvalue analysis, it is found that the pad shear mode is very sensitive to the friction curve. The results shows that the squeal propensity of the pad shear mode can be controlled by the design parameters such as pressure and stiffness.
A GAF (generated axial force) is produced at a plunging-type CVJ (constant velocity joint). A high GAF can cause vibrations in a vehicle. Grease is used to reduce friction between the roller and the track of the outer case of a CVJ. The grease performance depends on the surface conditions and operating temperature. The surface of the outer case is extremely rough and hard. In recent times, the maximum operating temperature of CVJs has crossed $140^{\circ}C$, because the exhaust line is now located close to the CVJ. In this study, we examined the friction characteristics of friction additives at $25-150^{\circ}C$ and determined an optimal formulation with a low friction coefficient. This formulation can be used to develop low-friction grease that can reduce the GAF produced at a CVJ by approximately 7-26%.

This paper presents simple and effective nonlinear friction compensation methods. When the direction of position command reverses, the integrator output of the PID controller does not change the sign of its output instantaneously, due to friction at zero velocity, i.e. stiction resulting tracking errors, that results in continuous push even though the command direction has been changed. To overcome this problem, we attempt to reverse the sign of the integrator output as the sign of velocity changes. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by experiments on a 3-PRPS (Prismatic-Revolute-Prismatic-Shperical joints) in-parallel 6-D.O.F manipulator. The control strategy has been analyzed for stability. Also discussed are disturbance observer and velocity observer approaches for friction compensation.

In the case of a automobile marking skid on road for a period of braking, in general, the automobile velocity just before rapid braking can be obtained by evaluating the coefficient of friction between tires and road. Up to now, the coefficient of friction has been derived from mean velocity measured by a time watch, but the automobile velocity obtained in this manner would be deviated from actual value considerably, due to errors arising from not only measuring time but other various factors. In this paper the presumption method of automobile velocity by accelerometer is presented so as to improve the accuracy of measurement, and to determine the velocity readily. The results obtained in this experiment show that the frictional coefficients between tires and road under the given experimental conditions are considered to take linear relation over the fixed velocity limits 30km/h to 50km/h while for the same limits of velocities the coefficients of friction by the time watch method are not valid ar low velocity range. It will be seen that the former is simple and reliable whilst the latter is cumbersome and unreliable.
