  • Recently, rock slope in large scale is often accompanied with the construction of mountain roads and power plants. Rock in nature has a number of discontinuities such as bedding plane, joints, fracture zones and others. In order to improve rock slope stability, it is necessary to research shear properties of rock joint. In this paper shear properties of rock joint were studied by tilting test. Relations between properties of roughness and shear behavior of rock joint are investigated experimentally. The roughness are examined by compared with shear strength. Consequently, it becomes clear that the engineering properties and failure state modes of slope is different by JRC, and the peak friction angle is different by percent of filling.

  • In this investigation, experimental attempts were made to observe and determine the variations in elastic and damping properties of the PVC depending on the amounts of MBS added to the mixture, PVC/MBS, and also on the thicknesses of the specimens. An acoustic resonance technique was used for the tests In this investigation. It serves as a method to characterize properties of materials set in vibrational motions, which is initiated by low level stresses generated by externally supplied acoustic energy. Substantial variations were observed in the test results with the addition of the MBS to the PVC. It was found that the magnitudes of elastic constants decrease while the damping capacity improve when MBS rubber was added in the range up to 9 phr.

  • Al-Pb-Si bearing alloys were produced by a forced stirring method and a rapid solidification process to study wear properties of bearing alloys. A homogeneous distribution of Pb particles in Al matrix could be obtained by means of the forced stirring and the rapid cooling during the casting. The wear properties of bearing alloys were tested by a pin-on-disc wear tester. The change in microstructure according to the alloy manufacturing variables was observed by the backscattered electron images. Al-Pb and Al-Si binary alloys showed a transition from mild to severe wear. The transition was not found in Al-Pb-Si ternary alloys. It could be concluded that the lubricatioin effect of Pb and the strengthening effect of Si in the ternary alloys enhanced the bearing properties. A Al-25%Pb-13%Si alloy showed the lowest coefficient of friction in this experiment. It indicated that the optimum concentration of alloy was 25% Pb and 13% Si when the forced stirring of melt and water-cooled-copper-mold solidification were adopted.

  • The wear properties of clutch facing materials with two different copper amounts were evaluated against the fly-wheel materials used in clutch system, such as gray cast iron and spheroidal graphite cast iron. Sliding wear tests were carried out for four different combinations with these clutch facing materials and flywheel materials at different speeds and applied loads. Results showed that the clutch facing material contained a higher copper amount had the better wear resistance. And using the gray cast iron as the counter material, clutch facing material resulted in the much lower wear rate, regardless of the copper amount. It is obvious that the wear properties of clutch facing material are influenced from the thermal conductivities of the clutch facing material and the counter material.

  • An investigation was carried out to understand the effect of the amount of free silicon on the tribological properties of Si-SiC. The specimens of dense Si-SiC composites with various amount of free silicon were fabricated in the temperature of 175$0^{\circ}C$ after molding under various pressure. Wear properties were measured by ball-on-plate wear tester under the constant weight of 4 Kgf at constant sliding speed of 500 mm/sec in water. As the result, the Rockwell hardness and fracture strength of Si-SiC composites remained nearly constant up to 16.62 vol% of free silicon in the Si-SiC microstructure. The Si-SiC composites containing the free silicon of 16.62 vol% was considered to be prominent in the tribological properties, which had the friction coefficient of 0.08 and the specific wear rate of 2.4$\times$10-8$\textrm{mm}^2$Kgf-1. The analysis of the wear surface indicated the complicated processes occuring on the surface such as fine polishing, abrasion, microfracture.

  • $Y_2O_3$ $Er_2O_3$ and $Nd_2O_3$ doped polycrystalline silicon nitride were prepared by hot pressed sintering at $1850^{\circ}C$ and their optical transmittance were investigated in visible and in infrared region. Mechanical and tribological properties were also investigated. Grain growth in silicon nitride was reduced with addition of $Y_2O_3$ and $Nd_2O_3$. 1 wt.% of each rare earth metal were sintered with 3 wt.% MgO, 9wt.% AlN and 87 wt.% of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$. Adding these rare earth metal oxides shows good mechanical properties as high strength and toughness and also shows low friction coefficient.

  • The present work examines the influence of surface coating on the temperature and the thermo-mechanical stress field produced by friction due to sliding contact. A two-dimensional transient model of a layered medium submitted to a moving heat flux is prsented. A solution technique based on the boundary element method employing the multiregion technique is utilized. Results are presented showing the influence of coating thickness, thermal properties, Peclet number, and mechanical properties. It has been shown that the mechanical properties and thickness of coating have a significant influence on the stress field, even for low temperature increase. The effects of the ratios of shear modulus become more important for low temperature increase than the effects of the ratios of other mechanical properties.

  • Plasma source ion implantation (PSII) is a non-line-of-sight technique for surface modification of materials which is effective for non-planar targets. Properties such as hardness, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and friction can be improved without affecting the bulk properties of the material. Type 304 austenitic stainless steel was treated by nitrogen plasma ion implantation at a target bias of -50kV. Surface properties, including microhardness and ion depth profile, were studied.

  • Thin films of amorphous carbon (a-C) generally combine high wear resistance with low friction coefficients and a-C films have widespread applications as protective coatings and passivation of electrical circuit and insulating layer. In this work we deposited the amorphous carbon (a-C) films on silicon substrate with a high rate DC magnetron sputtering system. It is obtained parameters on the deposition rate and physical properties of a-C films using a wide range of Ar gas pressure and DC power. The physical properties of the films were analyzed by Nanoindenter and AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), The electrical properties were investigated by electrical conductivity measurement.

  • In metal cutting at the tool-chip interface, friction generates considerable amount of heat. Thus, tile .knowledge of wear properties or the cutting tool material in high temperature has been known as one of tile important factors in need of clarification. The authors presented the wear properties of 5%V-5%Co-1%Nb high speed steel, fabricated by powder metallurgy, in room temperature in a previous article. The objective of this paper is to clarify tile effects of temperature ell its wear properties. Wear tests in sliding conditions under various temperatures have been conducted. The results indicate that tile wear properties of tile tool material in high temperature as well as in room temperature are excellent. It may be deduced that the oxide layer formed on the vol-n surface at high temperature is stable enough to prevent wear due to tile high temperature strength of its matrix.
