  • Recently, demands for lithium-ion batteries (LIB) in various fields are increasing. In particular, understanding of the reaction mechanism occurring at the electrode-electrolyte surface/interface is significant for the development of advanced LIBs. Meanwhile, research and development of LIBs highly requires a new specific characterization approach. For example, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been utilized to the LIB research field for various purposes such as investigation of topography, electrochemical reactions, ion transport phenomena, and measurement of surface potential at high resolution. Advances in the AFM analysis have made it possible to inspect various material properties such as surface friction and Young's modulus. Therefore, this technique is expected to be a powerful method in the LIB research field. Here, we review and discuss ways to apply AFM to LIB studies.

  • In order to understand the laminar heat transfer enhancement by swirl flow, the effects of heat transfer in a circular pipe with twisted inserts are investigated experimentally. In the present study, a uniform heat flux condition is considered. Laminar heat transfer correlations are developed using least square fit method from surface temperature distributions of an electrically-heated pipe and flow properties. Average Nusselt number correlations with twisted inserts are expressed as a function of swirl parameter, Reynolds number and prand시 number. When the twisted ratio is 6.50, mean Nusselt number and friction factor increase by approximately 500% and 300%, respectively, compared with the values for a pipe without inserts.

  • The planar anisotropic FEM analysis for predicting the earing profiles and draw-in amounts in the deep-drawing processes is introduced. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation with a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive equation is employed. Contact and friction are considered through the mesh-based unit vectors and the normal contact pressure. the consistent full set of governing relations, comprising equilibrium and geometric constraint equations, is appropriately linearized. Barlat's strain-rate potential is employed, whose in-plane anisotropic properties are taken into account with anisotropic coefficients and potential parameter. The linear triangular membrane elements are used for depicting the formed sheet. with the numerical simulations of deep drawing processes of flat-top cylindrical cup for the 2090-T3 aluminum effects on the earing behavior are examined. Earing predictions made for the 2090-T3 aluminum alloy sheet show good agreement with experiments, although some discrepancies were observed in the directional trend of cup height and thickness strains.

  • Shearing, including blanking, trimming, piercing, etc, is one of the most frequently used processes in sheet metal manufacturing. In this paper, an individual set of tooling with an in-die sensor was designed and precisely fabricated to carry out the experiment for the shearing process investigation. Through various experiments, it has been examined the influence of process parameters such as clearance, edge material properties and pad configuration. Since the tension between the part and the scrap increases when the clearance increases, the clearance should be selected properly in order to reduce the burr height. Also removal of the lower pad makes the sheared surface worse and the shearing system unstable. The shearing force increases when the clearance decreases and the friction of the tooling material decreases. Dynamic reaction force is also important to obtain the fine sheared surfaces.

  • The central burst defects, so-called chevroning, in wire drawing are analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The occurrence of central burst defects in wire drawing is estimated by the distribution of the hydrostatic pressure around the central part of the workpiece. It has been possible to obtain numerical boundaries which, in reduction in area vs. semicone angle plane, divide the safe and the danger zones, depending on friction factors and material properties. Based on the results of the analysis, it is suggested that the previous criterion derived from the upper bound analysis should be modified for better prediction of the defects. The back tension and the billet with a spherical hole on the central axis are also included in the analysis of the defects.

  • For the pressure compaction process of the ceramic powder, the green density is very different with both the ceramic body shape and the processing conditions. The density difference cause non-uniform shrinkages and deformations, and make cracks in the sintered ceramics. In this paper, Material properties of the alumina powder mixed with binder and the friction coefficient between the powder and the tool set were determined through the simple compaction experiments: Also the powder flow characteristics were simulated and the green density was analyzed during the powder compaction process with Finite Element Method (FEM). The results show that the density distributions of the green body were improved at the optimized processing condition and both the possibility of the farming crack generation and rho deformation of the sintered Alumina body were reduced.

  • In this study, the surface of inorganic fine powders is hybridized with nanovesicles containing tocopheryl acetate prepared with hydrogenated lecithin via a coating process. From AFM and SEM analyses it is found that the surface of the nanovesicle-coated fine powders lost their traditional topology and improved in terms of their roughness, skewness, and kurtosis. In addition, TEM observations revealed the formation of a 5 nm thick coating layer on the surface of the fine powders. These hybridized powders, in which bioactive materials such as tocopheryl acetate can be embedded, can be employed as a part of a drug delivery system due to their special ability to control release rate and temperature selectivity. Physical properties of the powders, i.e., the different angle and friction coefficient, were excellent.
