To stop a high speed train running at the speed of 300 km/h, the disc brake for the train should be able to dissipate enormous kinetic energy of the train into frictional heat energy. Sintered pin-type metals are mostly used for friction materials of high speed brake pads. A pad comprises several friction pins, and the topology, length, flexibility, composition, etc. have a great influence on the tribological properties of the disc brake. In this study, the topology of the friction pins in a pad was our main concern. We presented the optimization of the topology of a railcar brake pad with nine-pin-type friction materials by thermo-mechanical contact analysis. We modeled the brake pad with/without a back plate. To simulate a continuous braking, the pad or friction materials were rotated at constant velocity on the friction surface of the disc. We varied the positions of the nine friction materials to compare the temperature distributions on the disc surface. In a non-optimized brake pad, the distance between two neighboring friction materials in the radial direction from the rotational center of the disc was not equal. In an optimized pad, the distance between two neighboring friction materials in the radial direction was equal. The temperature distribution on the disc surface fluctuated more for the former than the latter. Optimizing the pad reduced the maximum temperature of the brake disc by more than 10%.
Frictional heat greatly influences the friction behaviors during clutch engagement. Therefore, the engagement of a wet or dry clutch is frequently not under control by the frictional heat. In a wet clutch, the frictional temperature also specially needs to be controlled, and in many cases, the clutch material is selected to prevent a temperature rise from the friction between friction pad and separator. However, only the selection of the clutch material cannot ensure sufficient control of the temperature rise by the friction. The groove pattern on a friction pad is designed for more flow rates of transmission fluid between the contact gap of clutch pad and separator for the cooling effect. In this work, grove patterns are designed for more flow rates out of the contact gap between friction pad and separator plate. Selected groove design shows the improvement flow rates of transmission fluid through both inner and outer radius, where most of the transmission fluid flows through the outer radius when the clutch is engaged due to the centrifugal force in conventional wet clutch groove. Several comparisons of the amounts of frictional heat generated on clutch pads are made in order to verify the decrease of the temperature rise according to the flow rates along the groove patterns.
The wet brakes used on a forklift often produce noise upon engagement. The elimination or reduction of this squeal noise is an important task for the improvement of the comfort of those operating these machines. In this paper, a test rig was developed for the testing of brake noise, and the squeal noise was measured with this apparatus. Automatic transmission fluid and grooves in the material of the friction-plate pad were found to be the main factors causing squeal noise. In order to identify the characteristics of this type of noise, signal analyses of the noise were conducted using different frequency spectra. The experimental results showed that the viscosity of the automatic transmission fluid and the groove pattern on the friction-plate pad largely affected the reduction of the wet brake squeal noise made by an industrial forklift.
The wet brakes used in an industrial forklift often produce noise on braking. Elimination or reduction of this squeal noise is an important task for the improvement of comforts. In this paper, a test rig was developed which was possible for testing of brake noise and an experimental measurement on squeal noise was performed. The causes of the brake noise are identified by experimenting how the factors such as automatic transmission fluid, the groove of friction-plate pad and the material of friction-plate pad affect the squeal noise. In order to identify the squeal characteristics, the signal analyses for noise are performed by using frequency spectrums. Experimental results showed that the viscosity of automatic transmission fluid and the groove pattern of friction-plate pad largely affect the reduction of the wet brake squeal noise in an industrial forklift.
Continuous contraction and expansion of disk brake can be due to friction and temperature difference at repeated sudden braking. As serious vibration at disk is produced, the braking force will be changed ununiformly and braking system can not be stabilized. Temperature and heat flux at disk brake are investigated by structural and thermal analysis in this study. The maximum equivalent stress and displacement are shown respectively at the ventilated hole and the lower part of disk plate. At thermal analysis of initial state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95.9^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The maximum heat flux of $0.0168W/mm^2$ is shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. At thermal analysis of transient state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95^{\circ}C$ to $96.5^{\circ}C$ after 100 second. The maximum heat flux of $0.0024W/mm^2$ is also shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. By comparing with initial state, the temperature on disk plate is more uniformly distributed and heat flux is more decreased by 7 times at transient state.
The drag torque in the wet clutch system of a dual clutch transmission system is investigated because it is relatively high, up to 10 of the total output torque of the engine, even when the clutch is in the disengagement state with zero torque transfer. Drag torque results from the shear resistance of the DCTF between the friction pad and separator plate. To reduce the drag torque for ensuring fuel economy, the groove pattern of the wet clutch friction pad is designed to have a high flow rate through the pattern groove. In this study, four types of groove patterns on the friction pad are designed. The volume fraction of the DCTF (VOF) and hydrodynamic pressure developments in the gap between the friction pad and separator plate are computed to correlate with the computation of the drag torque. From the computational results, it is found that a high VOF and hydrodynamics increase the drag torque resulting from the shear resistance of the DCTF. Therefore, a patterned groove design should be used for increasing the flow rate to have more air parts in the gap to reduce the drag torque. In this study, ANSYS FLUENT is used to solve the flow analysis.
The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the improvement method for the failure examples including the vehicle brake system in actual field. It was verified that the indicator plate of pad wear scratched the brake disk because of wearing after displacement of non- identification parts pad. The caliper of other vehicle was installed with brake system verified the phenomenon produced groove in center point because of one side wear when the pad was not fully contacted with the rub disk by other action surface pressure and pad action condition. It verified that the crack phenomenon fatigue was produced by brake thermal deformation because of decreasing the thickness by grinding to modify the non-uniformed wear of brake disk. It verified that the friction sound was produced by the friction phenomenon because of non-uniformed contact of lining and an alien substance with inner of the drum and lining braking by crack phenomenon with brake drum surface.
Transmission fluid film behaviors in the gap between the wet clutch pad and separator plate are analyzed using the CFD software ADINA. Three pattern groove designs are selected and are used to validate the fluid film behaviors based on the outlet flow in the gap when the wet clutch pad and separator plate are engaged. The main design goal for pattern grooves is faster engagement. In most cases, much of the outlet flow of transmission fluid in the gap occurs on the outer radius boundary due to the centrifugal force generated by the clutch pad circular motion. Groove patterns are created to ensure faster transmission fluid outlet flow in the direction of the inner radius boundary. Computational results of the selected groove patterns are compared.
There are two types of noises in running the rail vehicle. The one is periodic by electric motors, dehumidifiers, and dusting machines. And the other is aperiodic squeal noise by the frictions between the wheels and the rail or the disks and pads. The periodic noises in rail vehicle have been reduced by changing DC motors to AC motors with silencers, and by improving the lubricants. However, almost nothing relating a periodic noise has been studied. In this paper, the experimental methods were applied to understand phenomena of the squeal noise, which was occurred by the friction variation due to aperiodic stick and slip with low repeatability in the process of dry friction of the disk and the pad when a rail vehicle was being braked. By the experimental acoustic test, it was found the specific frequencies relating the squeal noise. And by modal testing, it was measured the resonant frequencies in the disk and the pad-plate which were the components of the braking system, and in the whole braking system, and it was found the specific frequencies having the effects on the squeal noise.
