An experimental research to evaluate the slip coefficients of high-strength friction-type bolt connection of weathering steel plate has been performed in this paper. The test specimens with mill scale or shot blast had been exposed in open air during 3 and 6 months and cleaning of rust surface by hand brushing, power tool brushing and no cleaning was considered. The relaxation of bolt clamping force had also been measured during 600 hours. It was found that slip coefficients increased to the value over 0.6 with exposure except mill scale surface by power tool brushing. The relaxation of bolt tension force in exposed specimens also increased and maximum value reached to about 10%.

In this study, a new empirical equation for the transverse dispersion coefficient has been developed based on the theoretical background in river bends. The nonlinear least-square method was applied to determine regression coefficients of the equation. The estimated dispersion coefficients derived by the new equation were compared with observed transverse dispersion coefficients acquired from natural rivers and coefficients calculated by the other existing empirical equations. From a comparison of the existing transverse dispersion equations and the new proposed equation, it appears that the behavior of the existing formula in a relative sense is very much dependent on the friction factor and the river geometry. However, the new proposed equation does not vary widely according to variation of friction factor. Also, it was revealed that the equation proposed in this study becomes an asymptotic curve as the curvature effect increases.

Nanocrystalline diamond(NCD) coated SiC balls were applied in a ball-on-disk tribometer. After seeding in an ultrasonic bath containing nanometer diamond powders, $2.2{\mu}m$ thick NCD films were deposited on sintered 3 mm diameter SiC balls at $600^{\circ}C$ in a 2.45 GHz microwave plasma CVD system. Bare $ZrO_2$ and SiC balls were prepared for comparison as test balls. Tribology tests were performed in air with pairs of three different balls and mirror polished steel(SKH51) disk. The wear tracks on balls and disks were examined by optical microscope and alpha step profiler. Under the load of 3 N, the friction coefficients of steel against $ZrO_2$, SiC and NCD-coated balls were between 0.4 and 0.8. After a few thousands sliding laps, the friction coefficient of NCD-coated balls dropped from 0.45 to below 0.1 and maintained thereafter. Under a higher load of 10 N or 20 N with a long sliding distance of 2 km, $ZrO_2$ and SiC balls exhibited the similar friction coefficients as above. The friction coefficient of NCD-coated balls was less than 0.1 from the beginning and increased to above 0.1 steadily or with some fluctuations as sliding distance increased. NCD coating layers were found worn out after long duration and/or high load sliding test, which resulted in the friction coefficient higher than 0.1.
Low alloy heat resistant brake disk and sintered brake pad are applied to mechanical brake system for the speed-up of urban rapid transit. In this research, we analyzed how the frictional characteristics between brake disk and pad are influenced by the disk mass. At a high disk mass, the friction stability was the lower value as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. Wear rates of friction materials showed the higher value at a low disk mass and wear rates of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. Average friction coefficient was the lower value at the 10 mm disk thickness and range of variation of average friction coefficient was also the smaller value at the 10 mm disk thickness. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficients under any of test conditions. Surface roughness of a disk showed the highest value at the 5 mm disk and surface roughnesses of 10 mm and 15 mm showed the similar level. As a result, friction characteristics of disk mass influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of friction pad and disk, but not the friction coefficient.
The inertia friction properties of C/C composites manufactured by the processes of pressure and at-mospheric carbonizaton with a commerciallized and two kinds of modified coal-tar pitch as a matrix pre-cursor were investigated. The modifications of a pitch such as the introduction of mesophase and the ad-dition of sulphur into a raw pitch were not effective for a impregnation efficiency conducted in a vacuum and at the same time in a pressure of 5kg/cm2 due to the increase of the pitch viscosity. There was not a difference in the densification increment between the pitch modifications however it was revealed that a pressure carbonization was more advantageous than an atmospheric in the densification and the formation of anisotropic carbon matrix. The friction and wear propertis of C/C having higher degree of matrix cry-stallization higher density and hardness of friction surface showed superiority. As the braking energy was increased the friction coefficients were decreased and reached almost same level at the high kinetic energy of 99.6kJ. The wear trends at 99.6kJ were different from the behaviors of friction ceofficient under the same energy in which an oxidation wear is being considered along with a mechnical wear although the wear rates were almost similar to the friction coefficient at the low energy.
Effects of resin contents, number of carbonization, graphitization, sliding speed, and oxidation on friction and wear behavior of carbon/carbon composite materials were investigated. Friction and wear tests were carried out under various sliding conditions. An experimental setup was designed and built in the laboratory. Stainless steel disks were used as the counterface material. Friction coefficient, emperature, and wear factor were measured with a data acquisition system. Wear surfaces were observed by the scanning electron microscope. It has been shown that the average friction coefficient was increased with the sliding speed in the range of 1.43~6.10 m/s, but it as decreased in the range of 6.10~17.35 m/s. Specimens prepared by different numbers of carbonization. showed variations in friction coefficient and friction coefficient of the graphitized specimen was the highest. Friction coefficients depended on contribution of the plowing and adhesive components. As the number of carbonization was increased, wear factor was reduced. Wear factor of the graphitized specimens dropped further. In the case of graphitized specimens, sliding speed had a large influence on wear behavior. When the tribological experiments were conducted in nitrogen atmosphere, the wear factor was decreased to two thirds of the wear factor obtained in air. It is obvious that the difference was affected by oxidation. Results of friction and wear tests were applied to a neural network system based on the backpropagation algorithm. A neural network may be a valuable tool for prediction of tribological behavior of the carbon/carbon composite material if ample data are present.
Piston friction is one of the important but complicated sources of energy loss of a hydraulic axial piston machine. In this paper, two formulas are derived for estimating instantaneous piston friction force and average piston friction moment loss. The derived formula can be applicable for piston guides with or without bushing as well as for axial piston machines of motoring and pumping operations. Through the formula derivation, a typical curve shape of friction force found from several experimental measurements during one revolution of a machine is clearly explained in this paper that it is mainly due to the equivalent friction coefficient dependent on its angular position. Stribeck curve effect can easily be incorporated into the formula by replacing outer and inner friction coefficients at both edges of a piston with the coefficient given by Manring (1999) considering mixed/boundary lubrication effects. Novel feature of the derived formula is that it is represented only by physical dimensions of a machine, hence it allows to estimate the piston friction force and loss moment of a machine without hardworking experimental test.

In this paper, friction coefficients between ices and model ship were studied in order to predict the resistance of ice. The friction coefficient is a dimensionless scalar value which describes the ratio of the force of friction between two bodies and the force pressing them together. The coefficient of friction depends on the materials, roughness on surface, lubrication, etc. We tested and analyzed the friction coefficient for the development of the test methodology. The friction coefficient for ice model test is very dominant to predict the ship performance, so every ice tank uses their own painting technique. In this study, the friction coefficient with changing the moving speed of ice was studies by using a flat plates which were made by the MOERI's paining technique and the basic research for the developing the paining methodology in the MOERI ice model basin was carried out.
The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has emerged as a groundbreaking technology for harvesting clean and sustainable energy cost effectively. For reliable TENG design, minimizing wear damage at the friction layers is crucial. This review provides a comprehensive overview of tribometer-integrated TENG testing configurations used in the simultaneous investigation of both tribological and electrical performance. It considers configurations such as plate-on-plate, ball-on-disc, and ball-on-flat tribometers designed for linear reciprocating or rotating sliding friction tests. These tribometers are either specifically designed or adapted for TENG testing. Triboelectric material holders facilitate friction tests by establishing electrical connections from the triboelectric materials or electrodes, thereby enabling accurate measurement of electrical signals. Electrometers and oscilloscopes record electrical outputs such as short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage. This integration enables the simultaneous measurement of both friction and electrical outputs, providing a thorough understanding of TENG performance. The review also summarizes how factors such as normal force, sliding frequency, and rotating speed affect friction coefficients and TENG performance. It also examines the relationship between the coefficient of friction and tribocharges under various loads and frequencies. The review emphasizes the importance of these testing configurations for evaluating both friction and electrical performance, which are crucial for optimizing TENG efficiency. Finally, the review explores future prospects for developing innovative tribometer designs suited for both tribology and TENG testing.

In this study, a series of push-off tests for lean concrete, aggregate, asphalt subbases mainly used in Korea were performed to investigate the friction characteristics between the slab and subbase layers. Use of separation membrane and wet condition of subbase were other parameters in the tests. Horizontal displacements of the slabs and friction coefficients were measured at 1st loading, stable condition (2nd and 3rd loadings), and wet condition (4th loading) by applying 40mm/hour horizontal loadings. Larger maximum friction coefficients were measured in order of the lean concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and subbases using the separation membrane at 1st loading, and in order of the asphalt, aggregate, lean concrete, and subbases using the separation membrane at stable and wet conditions. The friction coefficients of the aggregate and asphalt subbases which did not used the separation membrane decreased by the wet condition while the subbases using the separation membrane were not affected. Additional push-off tests for effects of slab thickness and temperature sensitivity of asphalt will be performed. And, effects of the friction characteristics between the slab and subbase layers on behavior and performance of concrete pavements will be investigated by structural analyses using the test results.
