  • Sawdust is considered one of the cheapest and abundantly available adsorbents, and it is not necessary to regenerate. The spent sawdust can be incinerated or reused as a fuel. The sawdust adsorption can be applied to the removal of color and metal cations from the wastewater. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adsorptive capacities of sawdust with respect to color, COD, SS, turbidity, metal cation from textile wastewater. Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Sips adsorption isotherm were obtained for the sawdust adsorption of Fe(III). The effects of particle size and amount of sawdust on the adsorption of Fe(III) were also studied. COD, SS, color, turbidity and Fe(III) removal efficiencies were examined at the continuous fixed-bed adsorption test. It was showed the removal efficiencies of SS 50.0%, Fe(III) 25.0%, turbidity 79.4%, color 48.6% and COD 50.9%. In addition, the changes of surface structure between before and after adsorption were investigated through SEM analysis. It is confirmed that the waste sawdust can be successfully used as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

  • Adsorption characteristics of $H_{2}S$ on KOH impregnated activated carbon were evaluated using dynamic adsorption method in a fixed bed. The pore properties, including BET's specific surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and mean pore diameter of these KOH impregnated activated carbons, were characterized from $N_{2}$ adsorption/desorption isotherms. Adsorption equilibrium data were correlated with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption of $H_{2}S$ onto the KOH impregnated activated carbon is better fitted by the Langmuir isotherm. An increase in the content of oxygen affects the performance of KOH impregnated activated carbon to the greatest extent.

  • Freundlich isotherms and Toth isotherms were obtained for benzene adsorption on activated carbon and zeolite 13X in static experiments. Breakthrough curves of benzene were measured in adsorption bed packed with the same adsorbents. Relation between breakthrough times and partial pressure of benzene was analyzed and the Freundlich isotherm parameters were determined. Adsorption amount of benzene predicted by the analysis of breakthrough experimental results was relatively consistent with that predicted by the static experimental results. Dynamic experiments for activated carbon bed, where more symmetric breakthrough curves were obtained, produced smaller errors with zeolite bed.

  • Kinetic and isotherm properties of the cadmium adsorption onto calcium sand and granite soil were evaluated by batch experiments. The pHs of calcium sand and granite soil were 9.51 and 6.33, respectively, showing that the precipitation of heavy metals can be occurred due to the increase of pH when the calcium sand is used as an adsorbent. The pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption kinetics satisfactory with correlation coefficients over 0.999. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of calcium sand and granite soil were 2.10 and 2.16 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherm followed the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating the cadmium adsorbed onto the heterogeneous surfaces of adsorbents.

  • Removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by brown sea weeds (Hizikia fusiformis, Laminaria, and Undaria pinnatifida) was 80-96% for lead, cadmium, chromium and copper ions. Fifty percent of the adsorption was completed in 4 min. The uptake of lead and cadmium ions followed Langmuir adsorption. In the adsorption experiments using single and multi metal ions 80-95% of metal ions were removed, and the removal efficiency was the best for lead ion.

  • The paper includes utlization of zeolite as potential adsorbent to remove a hazardous malachite green from waste water. The adsorption studies were carried out at 298, 308 and 318 K and effects of temperature, contact time, initial concentration on the adsorption were measured. On the basis of adsorption data Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model were also confirmed. The equilibrium process was described well by Freundlich isotherm model, showing a selective adsorption by irregular energy of zeolite surface. From determined isotherm constants, zeolite could be employed as effective treatment for removal of malachite green. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo second order model, and the adsorption rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with increasing initial concentration of malachite green. Thermodynamic parameters like activation energy, change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption. The activation energy calculated from Arrhenius equation indicated that the adsorption of malachite green on the zeolite was physical process. The negative free energy change (${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ =-6.47~-9.07 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ = +32.414 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption in the temperature range 298~318 K.

  • Batch adsorption studies were carried out for equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters for adsorption of coomassi brilliant blue G (CBBG) using activated carbon with varying the operating variables like initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. From estimated separation factor of Langmuir and Freundlich, this process could be employed as effective treatment for removal of CBBG. Also from Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model, adsorption energy (E) indicated adsorption process is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption reaction was found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation. Intraparticle diffusion was rate controlling step. Thermodynamic parameters like change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature of adsorption. The change of enthalpy (406.12 kJ/mol) indicated endothermic nature of the adsorption process. The change of entropy (1.66 kJ/mol K) showed increasing disorder in process. The change of free energy found that the spontaneity of process increased with increasing adsorption temperature.

  • Equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics of adsorption of acid black 1 (AB1) by coal-based granular activated carbon (CGAC) were investigated with the adsorption variables of initial concentration of dye, contact time, temperature, and pH. The adsorption reaction of AB1 by activated carbon was caused by electrostatic attraction between the surface (H+) of activated carbon and the sulfite ions (SO3-) and nitrite ions (NO2-) possessed by AB1, and the degree of reaction was highest at pH 3 (97.7%). The isothermal data of AB1 were best fitted with Freundlich isotherm model. From the calculated separation factor (1/n) of Freundlich, it was confirmed that adsorption of AB1 by activated carbon could be very effective. The heat of adsorption in the Temkin model suggested a physical adsorption process (< 20 J mol-1). The kinetic experiment favored the pseudo second order model, and the equilibrium adsorption amount estimated from the model agreed to that given by the experiments (error < 9.73% ). Intraparticle diffusion was a rate controlling step in this adsorption process. From the activation energy and enthalpy change, it was confirmed that the adsorption reaction is an endothermic reaction proceeding with physical adsorption. The entropy change was positive because of an active reaction at the solid-liquid interface during adsorption of AB1 on the activated carbon surface. The free energy change indicated that the spontaneity of the adsorption reaction increased as the temperature increased.

  • 2 (Langmuir, Freundlich, Elovich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich) and 3 (Sips and Redlich-Peterson)-parameter isotherm models were applied to evaluated for the applicability of adsorption of Cu(II) and/or phosphate isotherm using chitosan bead. Non-linear and linear isotherm adsorption were also compared on each parameter with coefficient of determination (R2). Among 2-parameter isotherms, non-linear Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm showed relatively higher R2 and appropriate maximum uptake (qm) than other isotherm equation although linear Dubinin-Radushkevich obtained highest R2. 3-parameter isotherm model demonstrated more reasonable and accuracy results than 2-parmeter isotherm in both non-linear and linear due to the addition of one parameter. The linearization for all of isotherm equation did not increase the applicability of adsorption models when error experiment data was included.
