  • Most of machines and structures contain the elements which contact each other directly. When these elements subjected to vibration or repeated load, local relative movement occurs between the elements in contact which results in, a kind of wear. In order to know the factors which govern fretting, we have to analyze the phenomenon of microslip which causes fretting by using a general and efficient method from a viewpoint of contact mechanics. Based on the results of analysis, it is necessary to propose the way of minizing fretting which is one of the most significant surface failure. In this report, a general and efficient algorithm is applied to analyze the contact problem of the bolted joint, which is one of the typical elements damaged by fretting, with ratios of plate thickness, the ratios of Young's moduli, the ratios of the plate thickness to bolt radius varied. Finally, the ways of minizing fretting for the boked joint are suggested.

  • The tubes in a heat exchanger, such as a steam generator (SG), are subjected to crossflow, and interaction between tubes and supports can happen, which can cause fretting wear of tubes. Although many experiments and models have been established, some detailed mechanisms are still not sufficiently clear. In this work, more attention is paid to obtain the regulation of impact and sliding in the complex process and many factors, such as excitation forces and clearances. The responses and contact forces were analyzed to obtain clear understanding of the influences of these factors. Room temperature tests in the air were established. The results show that the effect of clearance on the normal work rate is not monotonous and instead has two peaks. The force ratio can influence the normal work rate by changing the distribution of contact angles, which can result in higher sliding in the contact process. Fretting wear tests are conducted, and the wear surfaces are analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The results of this work can serve as a reference for impactsliding contact analysis between AVBs and tubes in steam generators.

  • In the study, corrosion characteristics under various corrosion environments(neutral solution, acid solution), for various hinge materials(SM20C, BsC3 and STC4H), were investigated by immersion test, and the behaviour of fretting wear under atmosphere was studied. In immersion test, corrosion potential of those materials showed to be noble in the sequence of $0.5\%HNO_3$> underground water> $0.5\%\;H_2SO_4$ solution, and potential of a sole material, except BsC3, was more noble than these of mixed materials. In same material SM20C, the fretting wear loss of rotary materials increased about 1.9 times to that of moving materials, because of surface hardening by frictional force.

  • Nuclear fuels are always exposed to hot temperature and high speed coolant flow during the reactor operation. Thus the fuel rod accompanies small amplitude vibration due to the turbulent flow. The random vibration causes friction between the fuel rod and the grid structure which provides the lateral supports. The friction is critical to the fuel rod fretting wear, and it degrades fuel performance when a severe wear is developed. LuGre friction model is introduced in the paper, and the performance was evaluated comparing to the classical Coulomb model. It is shown that the developed friction force considering the Coulomb friction is not enough to stop or delay the motion while the stick-slip can be simulated using LuGre friction model. Numerical solutions of the two dimensional spacer grid cell model with the modern friction are also reviewed, and it is discussed that the new friction model simulates well the nonlinear mechanism.

  • To study the influence of the shape of contacting bodies (especially the end profile) on slip regime, wear test is conducted in the case of the contact between tube and support. Two different end profiles of the support are used such as truncated wedge and rounded punch. During the test, 10, 30 and 50 N are applied as normal force and slip displacement varies between 10-200 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The tube and the support specimens are made of Zircaloy-4 and a specially designed wear tester is used. Tests are carried out in air at room temperature. Wear on the tube is examined by measuring microscope. Partial and gross slip regimes are classified from the observed wear shape. Surface roughness tester is also used to measure the wear depth and contour, from which wear volume is evaluated. The transition from partial to gross slip is also investigated by investigating the considerable increase of wear volume. From the result, the boundary between the partial and the gross slip is newly determined in the conventional fretting map for the present specific contact configuration. Since the transition is related with the amount of energy dissipation from the contact surface so is wear, it is regarded that wear can be restrained by designing a proper shape of support.

  • Fretting is a kind of surface degradation mechanism observed in mechanical components and structures. The fretting damage decrease in 50-70% of the plain fatigue strength. This may be observed in aircraft, automobile and nuclear power plant used in special environment and various loading conditions. In the present study, the characteristics of the fretting fatigue are investigated using the two aluminum alloy(Al2024-T3511 and Al7050-T7451). Through the experiment, it is found that the fretting fatigue strength of the Al7050-T7451 alloy decreased about 50% from the plain fatigue strength, while the fretting fatigue strength of the Al2024-T3511 alloy decreased about 45%. The tire track was widely observed in fracture surface area of oblique crack which was induced by contact pressure. These results can be the basic data to the structural integrity evaluation of aluminum alloy subjected to fretting damage.

  • The in-reactor fuel rod support conditions against the fretting wear-induced damage can be evaluated by residual spacer grid spring deflection or rod-to-grid gap. In order to evaluate the impact of fuel design parameters on the fretting wear-induced damage, a simulation methodology of the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions as a function of burnup has been developed and implemented in the GRIDFORCE program. The simulation methodology takes into account cladding creep rate, initial spring deflection, initial spring force, and spring force relaxation rate as the key fuel design parameters affecting the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions. Based on the parametric studies on these key parameters, it is found that the initial spring deflection, the spring force relaxation rate and cladding creepdown rate are in the order of the impact on the in-reactor fuel rod supporting conditions. Application of this simulation methodology to the fretting wear-induced failure experienced in a commercial plant indicates that this methodology can be utilized as an effective tool in evaluating the capability of newly developed cladding materials and/or new spacer grid designs against the fretting wear-induced damage.

  • Inconel-600 alloy has been used as steam generator tube material for current pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The long-term operation of steam generators showed that the use of this material induced localized corrosion damages and increased tube wear of steam generator. To protect these problems, steam generator tube material is being changed to Inconel-690 alloy. Based on the current trend, we have chosen Inconel 690 as the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) steam generator(SG) tube material and performed the design optimization of preventive measure against tube fretting wear for the APR1400 steam generator. In this paper, we examined the technical consideration in this modification : the selection of material, wear characteristics, effect of the Egg-crate Flow Distribution Plate installation, and effect analysis of vertical strip installation.
