  • About 8 million tons of straw (dry matter) become rotten during the monsoon(June to August) season in Bangladesh. The possibility of preserving straw with urea, under wet condition during dry period (December to May) and its utilization by cattle has been studied. Five tons of fresh and wet(600g DM/kg material) rice straw were preserved for six months, with 5% urea(W/W) in either dome or rectangular shaped heap without any polythene cover. The preservation quality, acceptability and nutritive value of preserved straw were then comparted with that of dry straw in growing cattle. In both types of heaps, straw was excellently preserved having strong ammonia smell, dark brown in colour with no fungal infestation. Urea preservation of straw increased its CP and ADF content. Preserved straw was readily accepted by the animals and they were healthy throughout the experimental period. Compared to dry straw, urea preserved straw had nonsignificantly higher rumen degradability, straw intgake and growth rate. Similarly, digestibilities of DM(p<0.01), OM(p<0.01) & ADF(p<0.01) were significantly higher in the preserved than the dry straw. It was concluded that wet straw with relatively lower moisture(400 to 500 g/kg straw) content can be readily preserved by using urea without being covered with polythene. Whether the same phenomenon occurs in the preservation of fresh and weet rice straw with relatively higher moisture(600 to 700 g/kg straw) content is yet to be determined.

  • A field experiment to compare the effects of different granular sizes of fused magnesium phosphate (FMP) on the growth and yield of barley plants was conducted on a loam soil during the 1978/1979 cropping period. The results were summarized as follows: 1. No significant differences in yield were observed between the application of comercial FMP, mixture of large and small granules, and small granular FMP; however, the smaller FMP application increased the yield of barley by 5 percent than the larger FMP application. 2. The fresh root weight and the total dry matter were greater in the smaller granular FMP, and the yield showed a linear relationship with the fresh root weight.

  • The effects of briquette ashes on the growth of vegetable (cabbage, lettuce, spinach and radish) and their fresh weight under the culture of the soil mixed with the briquette ashes, and on the chemical properties of the soil were investigated. The growth rate of these palnts and chemical properteis of the soil has shown some influence due to different concentration of briquette ashes added to the soil. The increase of growth in cabbage and lettuce was remarkably found by the plot treated with 1/50 concentration of briquette ashes. The fresh weight of vegetable plants was increased with high concentration of briquette ashes, but if the concentration of briquette ashes was too high, it was rather depressed. Chemical properties in the soil after cultivation of the plants were more depressed than before cultivation. In contrast the available nitrogen content in the soil after cultivation was more increased than before cultivation of the plants. The reduction of available nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen was associated with the increasing intensity of briquette ashes, but available phosphorus content was increased with high concentration of briquette ashes, though its content was not so high as the results obtained by Han(8). The values of total exchangeable base and pH in the soils treated with briquette ashes were increased with a high degree of the concentration of ashes. The value of pH was not significant, and pH value of lime plots was higher than that of briquette ashes. The average value of the water content did not show any difference, and the difference of the content of organic matter in the soil in which different vegetable grew into the plots reached to the significance of a 5% level.

  • Chemical analysis of salted fish was analyzed in 60 samples collected from various moloha markets in Sohag, Qena and Aswan Governorates, Upper Egypt. Moloha contained 52.9% water content, while organic matter content represented 71.79% of dry weight and 33.81%($338.12{\pm}8.64mg\;g^{-1}$) of fresh weight. Total salts and soluble salts represented 13.29% and 10.19%($132.88{\pm}7.65\;and\;101.93{\pm}5.76mg\;g^{-1}$ of fresh weight), respectively. pH values were more or less neutral. Mycological investigation of examined samples revealed that fifty-five fungal species and one variety belonging to 11 genera were identified. The fungal genera of highest occurrence and their respective number of species were Aspergillus(A. flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, A. montevidensis, A. ficuum, A. parasiticus and A. mangini) and Penicillium(P. citrinum, P. puberulum, P. aurantiogriseum and P. roquefortii). On the other hand, yeast represented 18.2% and 3.0% of total counts of fungi on Czapeks-dextrose agar and 15%NaCl-Czapeks-dextrose agar media, respectively. Samples were assayed for potential presence of mycotoxins. Ten out of 60 samples(16.7%) were proved to be toxic. It is the first record of mycotoxins contamination of salted fish in Egypt. The ability of 340 isolates of recovered fungi was screened for production of mycotoxins and extracellular enzymes.

  • Seven bacterial isolates (viz., AB05, AB10, AB11, AB12, AB14, AB15, and AB17) were derived from the rhizosphere and evaluated in terms of plant growth-promoting activities and the inhibition of Phytophthora infestans affecting tomatoes in Korea. According to 16S rDNA sequencing, a majority of the isolates are members of Bacillus, and a single isolate belongs to Paenibacillus. All seven isolates inhibited P. infestans by more than 60% in vitro. However, AB15 was the most effective, inhibiting mycelial growth of the pathogen by more than 80% in vitro and suppressing disease by 74% compared with control plants under greenhouse conditions. In a PGPR assay, all of the bacterial isolates were capable of enhancing different growth parameters (shoot/root length, fresh biomass, dry matter, and chlorophyll content) in comparison with non-inoculated control plants. AB17-treated plants in particular showed the highest enhancement in fresh biomass with 18% and 26% increments in the root and shoot biomass, respectively. However, isolate AB10 showed the highest shoot and root growth with 18% and 26% increments, respectively. Moreover, the total chlorophyll content was 14%~19% higher in treated plants.

  • To determine nutritive value and suitability of deep-stacked broiler litter for deer, the influence of supplementary levels of broiler litter on digestibility, dry matter intake, and nitrogen balance was investigated in male spotted deer (Cervus nippon) fed a commercial mixed(complete) ration. The deep-stacked and ground broiler litter was supplemented at the level of 0%(Control), 15%(T1) and 30%(T2) on the basis of fresh matter to the mixed ration. All treatments had similar palatability at about 3% body weight of dry matter intake. Dry matter digestibility was highest in Control and lowest in T2(P<0.05). Digestibility of crude protein was lowest(P<0.05) in T2. Dry matter and digestible dry matter intake was similar in all treatments. Daily body weight gain was not affected by treatments. Feeding 15 or 30% of broiler litter to male deer resulted in similar nitrogen intake, fecal nitrogen excretion and daily nitrogen retention(g/d), compared with feeding Control. These results suggest that up to 30% of broiler litter may be fed to male deer without deleterious effects on deer performance.

  • The effect of rare earth(RE) at three difference levels of nitrogen on the growth and nitrate content of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) were studied in terms of leaf size, fresh and dry weight increase, and chlorophyll and nitrate content grown in plastic pots within glasshouse. Leaf size was enlarged as the level of nitrogen applied was high, and leaf within, length, and thickness of leaf were increased by RE treatment showing significant difference at high nitrogen(N+1) plot. As the level of nitrogen applied was high, as fresh and dry weight per plant was increased significantly(p<0.05), and sprinkling cabbage with RE increased fresh and dry matter yield to 2∼12, 4∼6.2% more, respectively. Dry matter content of Chinese cabbage was increased by RE sprinkling. At all levels of nitrogen fertilized chlorophyll contents were increased by RE treatment. As the level of nitrogen was high, as the content of chlorophyll was highly increased by RE. Nitrate was accumulated more at high level of nitrogen application, but nitrate was decreased by RE application, 40% decrease at very high nitrogen plot(N+2). RE stimulated the growth of chicory with high chlorophyll content, and showed the possibility producing high quality agricultural products low in nitrate content.

  • Allium hookeri is used for food and medical materials in Asia. This study was carried out to elucidate the effects of shading rates on growth and quality of A. hookeri cultivation in greenhouse. Treatments were given with 35%, 55%, 75% and 95% shading rates and non-shading (Control). Photosynthesis photon flux density (PPFD) of control, 35%, 55%, 75%, and 95% shading were 792, 515, 351, 182, and $78.2{\mu}mol{\cdot}m{\cdot}s^{-1}$ respectively. The emergence ratio was 98% under non-shading, 35% and 75% shading condition, and it was 100% under 55% and 95% shading condition on April 20, 2016. These results showed no correlation between emergence rate and shading treatment. When shading net was set up inside at greenhouse, fresh weights in control, 35%, 55%, 75%, and 95% shading treatments were 1,142, 3,511, 5,936, 6,408 and 3,779kg/10a, respectively. When shading net was set up outside at greenhouse, fresh weights in control, 55%, 75%, and 95% shading treatments were 1,372, 5,442, 6,238 and 3,595kg/10a, respectively. Dry weight, percentage of dry matter, number of leavesand branches, plant height and root length in 75% shading treatment were higher than other shading treatments. From these results, we suggested that the proper shading rate in a greenhouse is 75% for A. hookeri cultivation in middle area of Korea.

  • Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of storage time and formic acid (FA) on fermentation characteristics, epiphytic microflora, carbohydrate components and in vitro digestibility of rice straw silage. Methods: Fresh rice straw was ensiled with four levels of FA (0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% of fresh weight) for 3, 6, 9, 15, 30, and 60 d. At each time point, the silos were opened and sampled for chemical and microbial analyses. Meanwhile, the fresh and 60-d ensiled rice straw were further subjected to in vitro analyses. Results: The results showed that 0.2% and 0.6% FA both produced well-preserved silages with low pH value and undetected butyric acid, whereas it was converse for 0.4% FA. The populations of enterobacteria, yeasts, moulds and aerobic bacteria were suppressed by 0.2% and 0.6% FA, resulting in lower dry matter loss, ammonia nitrogen and ethanol content (p<0.05). The increase of FA linearly (p<0.001) decreased neutral detergent fibre and hemicellulose, linearly (p<0.001) increased residual water soluble carbohydrate, glucose, fructose and xylose. The in vitro gas production of rice straw was decreased by ensilage but the initial gas production rate was increased, and further improved by FA application (p<0.05). No obvious difference of FA application on in vitro digestibility of dry matter, neutral detergent fibre, and acid detergent fibre was observed (p>0.05). Conclusion: The 0.2% FA application level promoted lactic acid fermentation while 0.6% FA restricted all microbial fermentation of rice straw silages. Rice straw ensiled with 0.2% FA or 0.6% FA improved its nutrient preservation without affecting digestion, with the 0.6% FA level best.

  • This study was investigated to estimate the relations between benthic environments and benthic polychaetous community from April 2012 to February 2013. Twenty four stations were selected sequentially with Seomjin River Estuary from the northern part of Gwangyang Bay. The study area could be divided into three characteristic zones based on salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH such as Saline Water Zone (SWZ), Brackish Water Zone (BWZ), and Fresh Water Zone (FWZ). Salinity was above 30.0 psu in SWZ, drastically decreased toward inland in BWZ, and nearly zero psu in FWZ. SWZ showed its specific environmental characters like that water temperature fluctuated with little seasonal change and DO showed the lowest values among three zones, and pH maintained as consistent value without seasonal fluctuation. In FWZ, on the other hand, water temperature showed high seasonal fluctuation, DO showed the highest values among three zones, and pH fluctuated greatly. In sedimentary environment, mud, sand and sand/gravel were found as dominant sedimentary deposits in SWZ, BWZ and FWZ, respectively. Organic matter content and AVS in surface sediment were high in SWZ, while Chl-a content high in FWZ. This study area showed a marked environmental difference between FWZ and SWZ as follows: FWZ has coarse sediment and low salinity, low organic matter content, low AVS in FWZ but SWZ has fine sediment and high salinity, high organic matter content and AVS. Species number and mean density of benthic polychaete community was highest in Saline Water Zone (SWZ), drastically decreased in Brackish Water Zone (BWZ), and lowest in Fresh Water Zone (FWZ). Dominant polychates above 5.0% of individual numbers were 6 taxa. Lumbrineris longifolia, Prionospio cirrifera, Tharyx sp. occurred as main dominant species of all study periods, and Hediste sp., Praxillella affinis, Tylorrhynchus sp. dominantly occurred at some seasons. Inhabiting areas of dominant species were separated characteristically. Representative species in SWZ were Lumbrineris longifolia, Tharyx sp., Mediomastus sp.. Wide-appearing species between SWZ and BWZ were Prionospio cirrifera, Heteromastus filiformis, Aricidea sp.. Characteristic species in FWZ were Tylorrhynchus sp. and Hediste sp.. As the results of cluster analysis and nMDS based on the species composition of polychaetous community, unique station groups were established in SWZ and FWZ. Stations in BWZ were sub-divided into several groups with season. Pearson's correlation analysis and PCA between benthic environments and ecological characteristics of polychaetous community showed that salinity, sediment composition, organic content and dissolved oxygen played a role to determine the temporal and spatial distribution of the ecological characteristics as species number, mean density, abundance of main species, and ecological indices.
