Seawater with salinity of 32.5 psu or less is observed in the southern Japan/East Sea (JES) every autumn. It is confined to a surface layer 30-45 m in depth that expands to cover the entire JES in October. Two sources of "autumn low-salinity water" have been identified from historical hydrographic data in the western JES: East China Sea (ECS) water mixed with fresh water discharge from the Yangtze River (Changjiang) and seawater diluted with melted sea ice in the northern JES. Low-salinity water inflow from the ECS begins in June and reaches its peak in September. Low-salinity water from the northern JES expands southward along the coast, and its horizontal distribution varies among years. A rare observational study of the entire JES in October 1969 indicated that water with salinity less than 33.0 psu covered the southwestern JES; the lowest salinity water was found near the Ulleung Basin. In October 1995, the vertical distribution of salinity observed in a meridional section revealed that water with salinity of 33.6 psu or less was present in the area north of the subpolar front.
Any significant inflow of fresh water due to flood or snow melting can rapidly reduce salinity at the bay. In such a case, the habitat environment in the sea near river mouth can be partly destroyed. Therefore, research to understand the salinity distribution quantitatively at the bay for the utilization of natural environment and for the inhabitant conservation must be very important. In this study, the investigation on the relationship between satellite image and turbidity is carried out first, and then the salinity distribution at the bay using the relationship between turbidity and salinity is derived. The main results are as follows. First the reappearance ability of RGB bands respectively of the satellite image is investigated, and then it was confirmed that the combination of band2 and band3 expressed best the movement characteristics of turbid water at the bay is chopped up into 4 small areas. Second the turbidity of river mouth is estimated using the travel time from the upward monitoring station to the river mouth. Finally the satellite image is converted into the salinity distribution by the correlation of salinity and turbidity. It is confirmed that the salinity distributions obtained from above three investigation methods are quite reasonable and clear.

Seawater intrusion phenomenons of coastal area happen by natural or artificial factor. For example, density difference of seawater and fresh water, surface of the water change by tidal current, pumping, aggregate picking from mouth of a river, large scale reclamation in water area business etc. This research analyzed effect that groundwater TDS changed by pumping. As a result, it was expose that TDS density increases by sudden inflow of seawater when do pumping up more than $200m^3/day$. Finally, We are expected to prevent calamity by seawater intrusion in coastal area through this study and propose optimum pumping amount to use groundwater safety.
To investigate the variations of environmental and microbial populations in six stations at water region of Gangjin Bay, nutritive salts, water temperature, COD, DO, pH, heterotrophic bacteria, fungi and facal coliform bacteria were analysed four imes from February to November, 1998. These data were subjected to simple statistics, correlation analysis and principal factor analysis. Ecosystem of Gangiin Bay was regulated by 2∼4 factors during four seasons. We estimated that it was mainly influenced by inflow of fresh water, nutrient salts, suspended solids, salinity and variation of water temperature. These results suggested that influences of environmental factor of Gangiin Bay was relatively less than those of other bays.

The extreme 2017 spring drought affected a large portion of South Korea in the Southern Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do districts. This drought event was one of the climatologically driest spring seasons over the 1961-2016 period of record. It was characterized by exceptionally low reservoir water levels, with the average water level being 36% lower over most of western South Korea. In this study, we consider drought response methods to alleviate the shortage of agricultural water in times of drought. It could be to store water from a stream into a reservoir. There is a cyclical method for reusing water supplied from a reservoir into streams through drainage. We intended to present a decision-making plan for water supply based on the calculation of the quantity of water supply and leakage. We compared the rainfall-runoff equation with the TANK model, which is a long-term run-off model. Estimations of reservoir inflow during non-irrigation seasons applied to the Madun, Daesa, and Pungjeon reservoirs. We applied the run-off flow to the last 30 years of rainfall data to estimate reservoir storage. We calculated the available water in the river during the non-irrigation season. The daily average inflow from 2003 to 2018 was calculated from October to April. Simulation results show that an average of 67,000 tons of water is obtained during the non-irrigation season. The report shows that about 53,000 tons of water are available except during the winter season from December to February. The Madun Reservoir began in early October with a 10 percent storage rate. In the starting ratio, a simulated rate of 4 K, 6 K, and 8 K tons is predicted to be 44%, 50%, and 60%. We can estimate the amount of water needed and the timing of water pump operations during the non-irrigation season that focuses on fresh water reservoirs and improve decision making for efficient water supplies.

Budgets of fresh water, salt, DIP and DIN in the Youngsan river estuary were estimated seasonally in order to clarify the characteristics of material cycling and flux of nutrients with a simple box model. Inflow volumes of freshwater into system was approximately $36.481{\times}10^6{\sim}663.634{\times}10^6m^3/month$ and existing water mass of freshwater in system calculated by salt budget was approximately $2.515{\times}10^6{\sim}5.812{\times}10^6m^3$. Mean residence time of freshwater was calculated to be about 0.26~2.03 day. water exchange $1,248{\times}10^6{\sim}9,489{\times}10^6m^3/month$ assumed with salinity between estuary and adjacent ocean. Inflow mass of DIN and DIN were approximately 76.63~1,149.91 ton/month and 2.91~61.22 ton/month, respectively. Residence times of DIP and DIN were calculated to be 0.45~1.10 day and 0.28~1.92 day, respectively. The ratio of water residence time versus DIP, DIN residence time was calculated that freshwater residence time was longer than DIP, DIN residence time except for summer season. Thus, We assume that circulation of Nutrients in the system will happen rapidly except for summer season. Specially DIP in Winter could assume to outer input source existence because of seawater inflow in system and high DIP concentration in open sea.
The variations of D.O and pH due to the inflow of seawater by sluice gates operation were observed in the Lake Shihwa, Korea. The distributions of D.O and pH were investigated at 11 stations during Feburary 1997 to July 1998. The concentration of D.O before gate operation was 10 mg/l or more all over the watershed, yet 5 mg/l or less in the water layers of 11 m or below from March to June 1997. Anoxic layer appeared in June 1997 and expanded during rainy season. The anoxic layer in the lake depleted the oxygen in seawater as seawater was inflowed. It may be interpreted that the phenomenon comes from the contact of seawater to lower fresh water. The contact of seawater in pH 7.8 to 8.2 to lower water less than pH 7.4 enhanced to oxidize. After January 1998, D.O of the lake increased over 10 mg/l and the stratification was weakened. As a result, it may be concluded that the best way to improve the water qualities is to increase the amount of seawater inflow and outflow so as not to be generated pycnocline in summer.
The latest-Quaternary paleoceanographic history of the Ulleung Basin, the East Sea (the Sea of Japan) is reconstructed on the base of planktonic foraminifera, oxygen and carbon isotopes, and accelerator mass spectrometer radiocarbon (AMS-$^{14}$C) data from two cores. Sinistral populations of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma are dominant during the last glacial period while dextral forms of Neogloboquadrina pachydeyma are abundant in the Holocene. An abrupt increase in ${\delta}^{18}$O values in both cores that began about 11 ka B.P may indicate the Younger Dryas cooling episode. A low-salinity event, marked by light ${\delta}^{18}$O values (0-1 %), is observed before the Younger Dryas event. As previous works suggested, the low-salinity event is probably due to the freshening of surface water caused by fresh water input from Huang Ho river and/or the excess of precipitation over evaporation. The lowest salinity water in the Ulleung Basin was probably continued from approximately 18 ka B.P. to 15 ka B.P. The ${\delta}^{18}$O values have gradually decreased since the Younger Dryas as a result of the continuous inflow of the warm Tsushima Current into the East Sea.

The behavior characteristics of the saltwater intrusion in the Seomjin River Estuary by the inflow of fresh water were analysed by the field observation using CTD in the neap tide in January, June, and August 2013 as well as a numerical model, EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code). As a result, Seomjin River Estuary is found that the saltwater intrusion is sensitive to the tide and tidal and freshwater flow. The results of field observation and numerical model were similar in the range of salt, but the results of salt wedge distribution were quite different. The observation of tide and tidal current as well as hydrographic surveying the Seomjin River Estuary will be jointly conducted for the accurate analysis.
In order to determine the effect of fresh water inflow from the Heongsan river on the changes of water quality in the Yeongil Bay (Korea), the seasonal changes of water temperature, salinity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN) and phosphate phosphorus ($PO_4$-P) concentrations were examined using the data set obtained five fixed points of Yeongil Bay from 1998 to 2000. The distributions and changes of COD and concentrations of total inorganic phosphorous (TIP) and nitrogen (TIN) at three points Heongsan river, were also compared with those of Yeongil Bay. Based on the correlations of DIN and $PO_4$-P, it was found that the inflow of freshwater affected on the water quality of Yeongil Bay. Such a complicacy was confirmed by the prominent differences in n few water quality measures between Site 1(the innermost area) and Site 5 (the mouth of the bay). The negative correlations in $\Delta N/\Delta P $ at sites 1, 2 and 3 of the inner-part of the bay also indicated a large effect of freshwater inflow on the water quality of the bay. The extremely low atomic ratio of an average of 6.4 in $\Delta N/\Delta P $ compared to the Redfild ratio suggested that the DIN was depleted in the overall bay system. In contrast, it was inferred that the excessive PO$_4$-P concentration was due to the inflow of freshwater from the Heongsan river.
