  • Many pharmaceutical products are available through prescription (Rx) only status. As a result, access to physicians and insurance coverage play a key role in the use of these products, and therefore may affect the population to whom advertising is targeted at. The movement of pharmaceutical products from prescription (Rx) to Over-the-Counter (OTC), or Rx-to-OTC switch changes the cost of acquiring the drug and therefore may change the incentives manufacturers have at targeting particular population segments. This study examines whether Rx-to-OTC switch changes the frequency and the distribution of who is exposed to pharmaceutical advertising. Using an archive of pharmaceutical advertisements and National Consumer Survey, this study examines how individuals with particular demographic characteristics are exposed to pharmaceutical advertisements before and after drugs are moved from Rx to OTC. The results provide evidence that individual's advertising exposure increases after Rx-to-OTC switch. Moreover, the increase in advertising exposure is greater for the low socioeconomic status (SES) consumers which implies they may get more information about the disease, treatment and product after the Rx-to-OTC switch through advertising. If low SES consumers have more exposure to the advertising after products switched to OTC, then FDA policies regulating this switch should recognize the potential role of advertising providing access to health-related information.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to help select an appropriate word embedding method when analyzing East Asian traditional medicine texts as data. Methods : Based on prescription data that imply traditional methods in traditional East Asian medicine, we have examined 4 count-based word embedding and 2 prediction-based word embedding methods. In order to intuitively compare these word embedding methods, we proposed a "prescription generating game" and compared its results with those from the application of the 6 methods. Results : When the adjacent vectors are extracted, the count-based word embedding method derives the main herbs that are frequently used in conjunction with each other. On the other hand, in the prediction-based word embedding method, the synonyms of the herbs were derived. Conclusions : Counting based word embedding methods seems to be more effective than prediction-based word embedding methods in analyzing the use of domesticated herbs. Among count-based word embedding methods, the TF-vector method tends to exaggerate the frequency effect, and hence the TF-IDF vector or co-word vector may be a more reasonable choice. Also, the t-score vector may be recommended in search for unusual information that could not be found in frequency. On the other hand, prediction-based embedding seems to be effective when deriving the bases of similar meanings in context.

  • In the literatual studies on the suppurative osteomylitis(附骨疽), the results were as follows. Suppurative osteomylitis(附骨疽) is called 'Mudujur(無頭疽)', is concerned with Pyogenic osteomyelitis in western medicine. The pathogenic factors of Suppurative osteomylitis were caused by exposing to wind-cold-wetness evil, or body weakness, or wound a bodily injury caused by physical means. The symptoms of Suppurative osteomylitis was alternating episodes of chills and fever, pain on buttock or thigh in onset. The differential diagnosis of Suppurative osteomylitis was divided three parts. One was the stagnation of virulent fire-evil. Another was the deficiency of both vital energy & blood. The other was wind-cold-wetness evil. The treatments of Suppurative osteomylitis was clearing away heat-evil and wetness evil, removing blood stasis and promoting meridian. In the frequency of prescription, the most numerous prescription were Osintang(五神湯) and Hwangyunhaidoktang(黃連解毒湯), the next were Neitakganghwaltang(內托羌活湯), Taibangpungtang(大防風湯) etc.
