  • In this paper, w-band frequency synthesizer was developed for frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensors. To achieve a small size and high performance, We designed and manufactured w-band MMIC chips such as up-converter one-chip, multiplier, DA (Drive Amplifier) MMIC(Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit), etc. And interposer technology was applied between the W-band multiplier and the DA MMIC chip. As a result, the measured phase noise was -106.10 dBc@1MHz offset, and the frequency switching time of the frequency synthesizer was less than 0.1 usec. Compared with the w-band frequency synthesizer using purchased chips, the developed frequency synthesizer showed better performance.

  • In this paper, a frequency synthesizer for X-band FMCW radars is proposed. Some X-band FMCW radars have been used as a level sensor for tanker ship and the resolution of the level sensor may be mainly depend on linearity of frequency sweep. For a linear frequency sweep. the proposed synthesizer employs a phase-locked loop using prescalars and a high speed digital PLL chip. The measured results show that the linear frequency sweep range is from 10 GHz to 11 GHz and the output power of the synthesizer is minium 7 dBm. and the phase noise is about -80 dBc/Hz at 100 KHz offset from 11 GHz.

  • With limitation of frequency bandwidth, the range accuracy of typical radars is limited. In this paper, for short distance measurements, the use of an AM(Amplitude Modulated) radar which provides improved range accuracy is proposed. The AM radar signal consists of a carrier frequency signal and double-sideband components. The fabricated AM radar operates with +10 dBm output power and 35 dB receiver gain at 24.128 GHz center frequency with 20 MHz bandwidth, and the range accuracy is measured as ${\pm}15\;cm$.

  • An analysis technique for detecting moving targets on a single-channel airborne frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) technology and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is presented. To analyze the relative velocities of moving targets, an FMCW-based signal model for stationary and moving targets was studied, and a SAR ambiguity function considering its signal model was simulated. The relative velocities of the moving targets on a reconstructed SAR image can be estimated by peak searching of the SAR ambiguity function, and the stationary and moving targets are easily distinguished when there is a large variation of the relative velocity. Analysis results of the moving targets on a reconstructed FMCW-SAR image, using practical airborne data and a SAR ambiguity process, are compared with the in situ testing in the study area.

  • Conventionally, a pulse radar is used for middle-sized or large-sized ships to detect other ships or obstacles located at a long distance. However, it is hardly equipped for most of the small-sized ships due to mounting and maintenance costs. Therefore, FMCW(frequency modulated continuous wave) radar is suggested as an alternative for the small-sized ships. Since it operates with low power and has good range resolution for relatively close objects, it is eligible for the small-sized ships. In previously proposed FMCW radar system, it only estimates distance and velocity of a target ship placed in the direction of main beam and is hard to detect several ships simultaneously. Thus, we suggest the method for detecting several ships at the same time by applying MUSIC(multiple signal classification) algorithm to FMCW radar signal received by a phased array antenna. In addition, by combining digital beam forming with the MUSIC algorithm, better angle resolution is achievable.

  • This paper proposes the design and implementation results for human and object classification systems utilizing frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensor. Such a system requires the process of radar sensor signal processing for multi-target detection and the process of deep learning for the classification of human and object. Since deep learning requires such a great amount of computation and data processing, the lightweight process is utmost essential. Therefore, binary neural network (BNN) structure was adopted, operating convolution neural network (CNN) computation in a binary condition. In addition, for the real-time operation, a hardware accelerator was implemented and verified via FPGA platform. Based on performance evaluation and verified results, it is confirmed that the accuracy for multi-target classification of 90.5%, reduced memory usage by 96.87% compared to CNN and the run time of 5ms are achieved.

  • In this paper, a GPU-accelerated kernel of range Doppler algorithm (RDA) was developed for real-time image formation based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) synthetic aperture radar (SAR). A pinned memory was used to minimize the data transfer time between the host and the GPU device, and the kernel was configured to perform all RDA operations on the GPU to minimize the number of data transfers. The dataset was obtained through the FMCW drone SAR experiment, and the GPU acceleration effect was measured in an intel i7-9700K CPU, 32GB RAM, and Nvidia RTX 3090 GPU environment. Including the data transfer time between host and devices, it was measured to be accelerated up to 3.41 times compared to the CPU, and when only the acceleration effect of operation was measured without including the data transfer time, it was confirmed that it could be accelerated up to 156 times.

  • With the increased demand for automotive radar systems, mutual interference between vehicles has become a crucial issue that must be resolved to ensure better automotive safety. Mutual interference between frequency modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) radar system appears in the form of increased noise levels in the frequency domain and results in a failure to separate the target object from interferers. The traditional fast fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, which is used to estimate the beat frequency, is vulnerable in interference-limited automotive radar environments. In order to overcome this drawback, we propose a high-resolution frequency estimation technique for use in interference environments. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithms, a 77GHz FMCW radar system is considered. The proposed method employs a high-resolution algorithm, specially the multiple signal classification and estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques, which are able to estimate beat frequency accurately.

  • FMCW(Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) Radar can detect the distance and the velocity of forward obstacles using linearly modulated FM signal. For better performance, the RF of radar should be operated with wideband frequency linearity on 300 MHz bandwidth at 77 GHz carrier frequency. In this paper, we propose a simple method for improving frequency linearity of FMCW radar implemented with VCO. The proposed method shows that the Voltage-Frequency relation of VCO could be measured by using the modified Tx waveform of FMCW radar. Then the measured nonlinearity could be compensated using LUT(Look-up Table) with easy. It is noted that the proposed can be adopted in existing system without extra circuit.
