  • Frequency of cavity vibration in air flowing tube is closely related to a velocity of air. In this research, an instrumentation system to estimate frequency of cavity vibration for measurement of the velocity and quantity of a moving fluid is implemented by using DSP TMS320C32. Measurement of the generated sound wave frequency in cavity is difficult because of environmental noise. Adaptive filters are used to eliminate this noise effectively. The estimated velocity and quantity of a moving fluid by proposed system is compared with the results measured by a standard flow meter.

  • This paper proposes a compensation algorithm for reducing a specific ripple component on synchronous reference frame phase locked loop (SRF-PLL) in grid-tied single-phase inverters. In general, SRF-PLL, which is based on all-pass filter to generate virtual voltage, is widely used to estimate the grid phase angle in a single-phase system. In reality, the estimated grid phase angle might be distorted because the phase difference between actual and virtual voltages is not 90 degrees. That is, the phase error is caused by the difference between cut-off frequency of all-pass filter and grid frequency under grid frequency variation. Therefore, the effects on phase angle and output current attributed to the phase error are mathematically analyzed in this paper. In addition, the proportional resonant (PR) controller is adapted to reduce the effects of phase error. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified through several simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive feedforward controller for periodic disturbance and noise cancellation, with a frequency tracking capability. It can be added to an existing feedback control system without altering the original closed-loop characteristics, which is based on adaptive algorithm. We introduce novel algorithm "Constrained AFC(adaptive feedforward controller) algorithm" that increase the convergence region regardless of the delay in the closed loop system. In the algorithms, coefficients of the controller are adapted using the residuals of constrained structure which are defined in such a way that the coefficients become time invariant. The proposed algorithm not only estimate the magnitude and phase of the tonal disturbance and noise but also track the frequency of the tone, which changes in quasi-static manner. The frequency tracking algorithm uses the instantaneous frequency approach based on Hilbert transform. A number of computer simulations have been carried out in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method under various conditions.

  • The separation of spectrally overlapped broadband echo signals from free-swimming Japanese needlefish Hypohamphus sajori using the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) was investigated. The broadband echo signals were measured over frequency ranges of 40-80 and 110-220 kHz. The overlapped echo signals were separated after eliminating noise signals in the smoothed pseudo-Wigner-Ville distribution domain. The echo signal from a 40 mm WC sphere suspended just below a chirp transducer was used to calibrate the broadband of the chirp echo sounder and estimate the frequency dependence of target strength for the separated echo signals. The experimental results show that the proposed FrFT method can analyze the time-frequency image of broadband echo signals from free-swimming individual fish effectively and can be used as a quantitative tool for extracting the acoustic features used for fish species identification.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm to estimate the circulating currents in the transformers in parallel in an ultra high voltage system. For the Y-Y-${\Delta}$ transformers operated in parallel, there exist two kinds of the circulating currents i.e. one is between the tanks and the other between the banks of the delta side. As the former is 90 deg out of phase of the load current, it is estimated by decomposing the line current into the component 90 deg out of phase of the load current in the frequency domain. The latter is estimated in the time domain from applying the Kirchhoff's voltage law on the delta winding which gives a first-order differential equation in terms of the delta winding currents. To estimate the circulating currents between the tanks, the performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated when the impedances of the two transformer tanks are different or the taps of the on-load tap changer of the transformers are mismatched temporarily. To estimate the circulating currents between the banks, the performance of the proposed algorithm is also examined under magnetic inrush and over-excitation. Test results indicate that the algorithm can estimate the two kinds of the circulating currents successfully.

  • Due to recent increasing heavy snow in Korea, the damage caused by heavy snow is also increasing. In Korea, there are many efforts including establishing disaster prevention measures to reduce the damage throughout the country, but it is difficult to establish the design criteria due to the characteristics of heavy snow. In this study, snowfall frequency analysis was performed to estimate design snow depths using observed snow depth data at Jinju, Changwon and Hapcheon stations. The conventional frequency analysis is sometime limted to apply to the snow depth data containing zero values which produce unrealistc estimates of distributon parameters. To overcome this problem, this study employed mixed distributions based on Lognormal, Generalized Pareto (GP), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Gamma, Gumbel and Weibull distribution. The results show that the mixed distributions produced smaller design snow depths than single distributions, which indicated that the mixed distributions are applicable and practical to estimate design snow depths.

  • Background: Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) in human peripheral blood lymphocytes is one of the most extensively studied biomarkers employed to evaluate genetic damage subsequent to pesticide exposure. Objective: To estimate the pooled levels of SCE in human peripheral blood lymphocytes among population exposed to pesticide. Materials and Methods: Meta-analysis on the association between SCE frequency and pesticide exposure was performed with STATA 10.0 software package and Review Manager 5.0.24 in this study. Results: The overall means of SCE were 7.88 [95% confidence intervals (95%CI): 6.71-9.04] for exposure group and 6.05 (95%CI: 5.13-6.95) for controls, respectively. There was statistically significant difference in the SCE frequency in human peripheral blood lymphocytes between pesticide-exposed groups and control groups, and the summary estimate of weighted mean difference was 1.69 (95%CI: 1.01-2.38). We also observed that pesticide-exposed population had significantly higher SCE frequency than control groups among smokers, nonsmokers, pesticide applicator, pesticide producer, other exposure population and Asian population in stratified analyses. Conclusions: Data indicate that the SCE frequency in human peripheral blood lymphocytes might be an indicator of early genetic esffects for pesticide-exposed populations.

  • The horizontal to vertical (H/V) ratio technique in spectral domain is a common useful technique to estimate empirical site transfer function. The technique, originally proposed by Nakamura, is proposed to analyse the surface waves in the micrortremor records. The purpose of this paper is to estimate spectral ratio using observed data at the seismic stations distributed within Southern Korean Peninsula from the Fukuoka earthquake including 11 aftershocks. The results show that most of the stations have fairly good amplification characteristics in low frequency band. However, some of the seismic stations show one (resonant frequency specific to the site) or several local peaks of amplification factors with narrow high frequency band. Even though the site amplification characteristics are important information, we should be careful to analyse the observed ground motions from the seismic stations which have several very high amplification peaks for the deconvolution of seismic source and attenuation parameters.

  • It is necessary to consider the site amplification for estimating SSI (soil structure interaction) and seismic source with more confidence. The horizontal to vertical (H/V) ratio technique in spectral domain is one of several techniques to estimate empirical site transfer function. The technique, originally proposed by Nakamura (1989), is applied to analyze the surface waves in the microtremor records. However, the application of this technique has been widened to the shear wave energy of strong motions for estimating site amplification. The purpose of this paper is to estimate spectral ratio using observed data at the seismic stations distributed within Southern Korean Peninsula from the Fukuoka earthquake including 11 aftershocks. The results show that each station has the its own characteristics of the specific resonance, high-band, and low-band frequency. The characteristics of the resonance frequency is more important because the quality of the seismic records are dependent on the resonance frequency. The result can be used for the study of site classification and removal of the site amplification effects from observed records can give us more reliable seismic source parameters.
