This paper presents an automatic frequency control algorithm for RTLS DS-SS modem based on the standard of ISO/IEC 24730-2. The presented automatic frequency control algorithm consists of frequency acquisition mode and frequency tracking mode, and the frequency acquisition mode is divided into the angle estimation step for frequency offset estimation and the verification step for removing the angle ambiguity. In the angle estimation step, three different sub-bit angles are estimated according to the timing intervals, then the estimates are used to re move the angle ambiguity in the verification step. The theoretical analysis and the simulation results of the proposed frequency control algorithm are presented.

The previous works for WLAN system based on OFDM is mainly individual study for independent frequency offset or symbol synchronization. In this paper, the performance of IEEE 802.11a WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) system in the realistic indoor multipath channel models is analyzed with frequency offset compensation and channel estimation methods. For the performance analysis of the WLAN system indoor Rayleigh multipath channels are adopted, and the BER(Bit Error Rate) of WLAN system is calculated with y2 code-rate 16-QAM based on standard specification. From the simulation results, the difference of required Eb/No for BER of 10-3 is 1-2dB between the channel estimation and frequency offset compensation, and perfect channel estimation and no frequency offset.

The video compression standard required a processing technique for a high resoluion image and increased the coding size to increase the resolution of the image. Accurate motion estimation and increased coding size provide high accuracy and compression rate, but there is a problem of increased computational complexity. In this paper, we use DCT - based motion estimation in the frequency domain to reduce complexity. However, we found that the DCT and quantization process used in a general video encoder are applied to the frequency domain encoder, resulting in problems caused by the scaling process. Therfore, in this paper, we extract the scaling matrix that can be applied in the DCT step and resolve the, and improve the performance of motion estimation using increased coding size.
In this paper, a blind symbol timing offset (STO) estimation method is proposed for offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) modulated signals, which also works for other linearly modulated signals (LMS) such as binary-PSK, QPSK, 𝜋/4-QPSK, and minimum-shift keying. There are various methods available for blind STO estimation of LMS; however, none work in the case of OQPSK modulated signals. The popular cyclic correlation method fails to estimate STO for OQPSK signals, as the offset present between the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components causes the cyclic peak to disappear at the symbol rate frequency. In the proposed method, a set of close and approximate offsets is used to compensate the offset between the I and Q components of the received OQPSK signal. The STO in the time domain is represented as a phase in the cyclic frequency domain. The STO is therefore calculated by obtaining the phase of the cyclic peak at the symbol rate frequency. The method is validated through extensive theoretical study, simulation, and testbed implementation. The proposed estimation method exhibits robust performance in the presence of unknown carrier phase offset and frequency offset.

In this paper, a new indirect feedback active noise control (ANC) scheme based on the fundamental frequency estimation is proposed for systems with a harmonic noise. When reference signals necessary for feedforward ANC configuration is difficult to obtain, the conventional ANC algorithms for multi-tonal noise do not measure the reference signals but generate them with the estimated frequencies. However, the beating phenomena, in which certain frequency components of the noise vanish intermittently, may make the adaptive frequency estimation difficult. The confusion in the estimated frequencies due to the beating phenomena makes the generated reference signals worthless. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts. The first part is a reference generator using the fundamental frequency estimation and the second one is the conventional feedforward control. We propose the fundamental frequency estimation algorithm using decision rules, which is insensitive to the beating phenomena. In addition, the proposed fundamental frequency estimation algorithm has good tracking capability and lower variance of frequency estimation error than that of the conventional cascade ANF method. We are also able to control all interested modes of the noise, even which cannot be estimated by the conventional frequency estimation method because of the poor SIN ratio. We verify the performance of the proposed ANC method through simulations for the measured cabin noise of a passenger ship and the measured time-varying engine booming noise of a passenger vehicle.
In this paper, we evaluate the underwater frequency diversity communication performance of Selective Combination (SC) using Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE). In an underwater multipath frequency selective channel, destructive interference fading due to delay spread of a received signal affects the increase in error and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) variability of an underwater acoustic communication. Selective Combination frequency diversity using a single sensor is applied as a transmission performance improvement technique according to the frequency selectivity of a channel. In the sea experiment applying MLE for SC decision value extraction, we evaluate the performance of SC frequency diversity and MLE-SC frequency diversity. In experiment result, we confirm through experiment that the Bit Error Rate (BER) is relatively lower when the decision value extracted through MLE-SC is applied than when the SC decision value is fixed.
This paper presents a novel method for power system harmonic estimation based on the Park transform. The proposed method firstly extends the signal to a group of three-phase signals in a-b-c coordinate. Then, a linear fitting based method is adopted to estimate the fundamental frequency. Afterwards, the Park transform is utilized to convert the three-phase signals from a-b-c coordinate to d-q-0 coordinate. Finally, the amplitude and phase of a harmonic component of interest can be calculated using the d-axis and q-axis components obtained. Simulation studies have been conducted using matrix laboratory (MATLAB) and power system computer aided design/electromagnetic transients including direct current (PSCAD/EMTDC). Simulation studies in MATLAB have considered three scenarios, i.e., no-frequency-deviation scenario, frequency-deviation scenario and the scenario in the presence of inter-harminics. The results have demonstrated that the proposed method achieves very high accuracy in frequency, phase and amplitude estimation under noisy conditions, and suffers little influence of the inter-harmonics. Moreover, comparison studies have proved that the proposed method is superior to FFT and Interpolated FFT with the Hanning Window (IpFFTHW). Finally, a popular case in PSCAD/EMTDC has been employed to further verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we propose a new estimation method of time offset, frequency offset, and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) using the synchronization channel preamble to provide IEEE 802.16.1a based talk-around direct communications (TDC). The proposed scheme estimates the time offset and frequency offset both in the time domain and in the frequency domain considering the preamble structure. In addition, it improves the estimation accuracy by combining the estimated values in two domains taking into account TDC synchronization scenarios. Through numerical simulations in the TDC channel environments, the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with those of existing techniques such as the time domain estimation and the frequency domain estimation.

In this paper, a fine residual frequency offset estimation scheme is proposed for multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) systems. The basic idea of our approach is based on the fact that two adjacent OFDM symbols carry the identical information in the MB-OFDM UWB system, thus removing the need of pilot symbols. The mean square error of the synchronization scheme is evaluated and simulation results are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed estimator. When compared to the pilot-aided conventional estimator, the proposed estimator has a lower estimation error.
Estimation of power system frequency is an important task because frequency deviation is a good indicator of the system abnormal operating conditions. The algorithms, curve fitting, technique using Taylor series, deviation of phasor angle of fundamental waveform using DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) and Prony method, are tested under operation of the frequency relaying by using EMTP MODELS. The performance of methods is compared with the simulation results.
