Changes in composition of fatty acids and free amino acids in three differently dried Alaska pollack (sun dried, naturally cyclic freeze-thaw dried, and 1-year-aged cyclic freeze-thaw dried Alaska pollack (Hwangtae)) were investigated to correlate them with browning reactions in drying and aging Alaska pollack. Major fatty acids of the sun dried Alaska pollack were palmitic acid, oleic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and those in the Hwangtae were palmitic acid, oleic acid, and gondoic acid. Hwangtae showed the lowest amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids among the three types of dried Alaska pollack. Free amino acids content of sun dried Alaska pollack was higher than that of the cyclic freeze-thaw dried Alaska pollack and Hwangtae. Lesser amount of histidine in Hwangtae (0.02%) than that in the cyclic freeze-thaw dried Alaska pollack (0.087%) may indicate the degradation of histidine due to the browning reaction in aging the cyclic freeze-thaw dried Alaska pollack. Significant changes in compositions of fatty acids and free amino acids among the dried products revealed the browning reaction resulted from carbonyl compounds produced by decomposition of lipid hydroperoxides and free amino acids. Aging the cyclic freeze-thaw dried Alaska pollack for a year contributed to the development of browning.
This work was to study drying characteristics of the brown rice koji, an enzymic health food, using microwave under vacuum. Cooked brown rice was inoculated with Aspergillus oryzae and incubated at $32^{\circ}C$ for 6 days. The brown rice koji was dried by different drying methods: microwave vacuum drying, hot air drying, vacuum drying and freeze drying. Each drier except freeze drier was set to maintain the sample temperature at $40^{\circ}C$. During microwave vacuum drying, the sample reached $40^{\circ}C$ much faster (within $5{\sim}10\;min$) and was dried much faster (2 hrs) than the other drying methods. The initial drying rate of microwave vacuum drying was ten times faster than that of hot air drying. The microwave vacuum drying produced a dry sample of the highly retained enzymic activity, followed by freeze drying, vacuum drying, and hot air drying.
In recent years, there has been an interest to use Moringa oleifera as the natural coagulant due to cost, associated health and environmental concerns of synthetic organic polymers and inorganic chemicals. However, it is known that M. oleifera as the natural coagulant is highly biodegradable and has a very short shelf life. This research was carried out to investigate the effects of storage temperature, packaging methods, and freeze-drying on the preservation of M. oleifera seeds powders. Non freeze-dried M. oleifera was prepared into different packaging namely open container, closed container and vacuum packing, whilst, freeze-dried M. oleifera was stored in closed container and vacuum packing. Each of the packaging was stored at room temperature ($30\;to\;32^{\circ}C$) and refrigerator ($4^{\circ}C$). The turbidity removal efficiencies of stored M. oleifera were examined using jar test at monthly interval for 12 months. The results indicated that non freeze-dried M. oleifera kept in the refrigerator ($4^{\circ}C$) would preserve its coagulation efficiency. In addition, closed container and vacuum packing were found to be more appropriate for the preservation of non freeze-dried M. oleifera, compared to open container. Freeze-dried M. oleifera retained its high coagulation efficiency regardless the storage temperature and packaging method for up to 11 months. Besides, higher increment in zeta potential values for water coagulated with freeze-dried M. oleifera indicated the higher frequency of charge neutralization and better coagulation efficiency of freeze-dried M. oleifera, compared to non freeze-dried seeds. As a coagulant, M. oleifera did not affect the pH of the water after treatment.
This study was to explore the characteristics of 6 mole% CaO stabilized $ZrO_2$ prepared by wet chemical methods. The results of the experiments were as follows: 1. The powder calcined at 1000$^{\circ}$-110$0^{\circ}C$ was partly agglomerated. The morphology of agglomerate was spherical of 0.5-1$\mu{m}$ in size for Hot Petroleum Drying Method, chain-like of 1-2$\mu{m}$ for Freeze Drying Method, and irreqular of 2-3$\mu{m}$ for Coprecipitation Method. 2. Optimum calcining conditions for powder prepared by wet chemical methods were found: 110$0^{\circ}C$, 2h in air for Hot Petroleum Drying Method and Freeze Drying Method, and 100$0^{\circ}C$, 2h in air for Coprecipitation Method. 3. When specimen was calcined at 1000$^{\circ}$-110$0^{\circ}C$ in air for 2h and then sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$ in air for 4h, the specimens prepared by wet chemical methods showed a high sintered density (94% of theoretical density) and a low open porosity (<0.8%); however, the sintered density of the specimen prepared by Oxide Wet Mixing Method was 90%. 4. The amount of cubic phase of sintered body prepared by wet chemical methods was observed to be higher than the one prepared by Oxide Wet Mixing Method. 5. It was found that Hot petroleum Drying Method, Freeze Drying Method and Coprecipitation Method were nearly the same in respect of the results of stabilization grade and sintered density of CaO-stabilized $ZrO_2$.

Chemical properties of barley leaf were investigated using different drying methods. Moisture contents of barley leaf were 75.22%, 7.54%, 2.57%, 6.74% and 8.91% for samples dried using raw, hot-air dryer, freeze dryer, shade dryer, vacuum freeze dryer and microwave dryer, respectively. Mineral contents were high Ca, Mg, Na, P, and K in barley leaf regardless of drying methods. Organic acid contents were oxalic acid, acetic acid, citric acid and fumaric acid with no differences between drying methods. Contents of vitamin C were 142.56 mg%, 629.23 mg%, 598.48 mg%, 657.62 mg% and 724.34 mg% for samples using raw, hot-air dryer, freeze dryer, shade dryer, vacuum freeze dryer and microwave dryer, respectively. Chlorophyll contents of barley leaf dried by hot-air dryer and shade dryer were higher than in that of freeze dryer and microwaves dryer. b-values were lower in freeze dryer than in that of other dried methods.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of starch noodles (dangmyeon; SNs) with different starch sources and porcine intestines (PIs) with different pH on the rehydration stability of Korean blood sausage (sundae). Mungbean SN3 and PI3 (pH 9.18) showed significantly higher values of 80.69%-91.67% and 79.66%-80.98%, respectively, regardless of the drying methods (hot air, vacuum and freeze drying) (p<0.05). A number of larger pores were observed only in the cross-section of the freeze dried SN and PI through SEM. SN2 (potato starch) and PI3 (pH 9.18) showed lower expansion (⁎ΔL 6.90 mm) and higher expansion ratio (⁎ΔL 26.29 mm), respectively, after rehydration of freeze dried sample (p<0.05). From the application of SN2 (potato starch) and PI (0.5%-2.0% Na-pyrophosphate) to freeze dried sundae manufacturing, higher rehydration stability of more than 91.5% was obtained. These results suggested that potato SN and treatment of PI with Na-pyrophosphate is useful for desirable rehydration stability of freeze dried sundae.
Production of biomass by fed-batch culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hansen CBS5926, which is used to treat intestinal disorders, was investigated using ethanol as the sole carbon source. Ethanol was a better carbon source than glucose for high cell density culture of the st-rain since it could decrease the frequency of contamination while increasing the efficiency and final productivity of the fermentation process. Under optimal conditions, 38 g/ℓ of dry cell weight with $2.2{\times}10^{9}$ cfu/㎖ of maximum viable cell count was achieved after 72h cultivation. Freeze-drying of the cultured yeast cells resulted in severe reduction of viability. Of the freeze-drying protectants tested, 20% sucrose and 30% lactose were most effective for the preservation of yeast cells with a viability level of 16.3%. A combination of skim milk and lactose with 20% sucrose(w/v) exerted no synergistic influence upo the viability of the cells during cryopreservation by freeze-drying.
Objective : Okchun-San(OCS) is known as an effective herbal medicine on Type 2 diabetes. We performed to change OCS formulation for freeze drying capsulation. Methods The mixtures of OCS were extracted with water. finally, the filtered solution were evaporated and lyophilized to dry granules. The various ratio of excipients were studied to determine the formation for capsulizing. The samples were inspected for any difference in color, taste and appearance. Results: The prepared form of OCS were dried and weighted 260kg. The lyophilized dry powder yielding 40kg. The suitable ratio of OCS-dry powder and excipient was 10:1. The average weights of On and placebo capsules were $440{\pm}5.28mg$, $465{\pm}7.95mg$, respectively. There was no notable change in color and appearance for both capsuled samples throughout the study period. Conclusions: Therefore in can be concluded that freeze drying capsulation is appropriate form of OCS.
The compressive strength of PEG along processing concentration and solvent is willing to be measured and proper processing condition for exhibition and storage is also willing to be measured by comparing with dimensional stability. In the advanced research of setting PEG-preprocessing concentration & solvent for freeze drying of waterlogged archaeological wood of high water content, vacuum freeze drying showed the highest dimension stability after 40% PEG-preprocessing of aqueous solution. In this study, the compressive strength increased in proportion of processing concentration and water showed the relatively-higher compressive strength than t-butanol regarding solvent. Especially, it showed that there is no big strength difference between PEG 40% and PEG 50% in aqueous solution by 6.6%(16kgf/$cm^2$). According to the above results, it was recognized that it is most effective to implement freeze drying after 40% PEG-preprocessing when want to dimensional stability and compressive strength simultaneously.
When used for amplicon sequencing, Illumina platforms produce more than hundreds of sequence artefacts, which affects operational taxonomic units based analyses such as differential abundance and network analyses. Nevertheless it has become a major tool for fecal microbial community analysis. In addition, results from sequence-based fecal microbial community analysis vary depending on conditions of samples (i.e., freshness, time of storage and quantity). We investigated if freeze-drying samples could improve quality of sequence data. Our results showed reduced number of possible artefacts while maintaining overall microbial community structure. Therefore, freeze-drying feces prior to DNA extraction is recommended for Illumina-based microbial community analysis.
