  • The construction of free-form structures with intricate curved exteriors necessitates the use of bespoke molds. To fulfill this requirement, a blend of Phase Change Material(PCM) and Ultra-High Performance Concrete(UHPC) is utilized. PCM endows the solution with recyclability, while UHPC facilitates the effortless execution of curvature in the mold fabrication process. However, it's worth mentioning that the melting point of PCM hovers around 58-64℃, and the heat emanating from UHPC's hydration process can potentially jeopardize the integrity of the PCM mold. Hence, experimental validation of the mold shape is a prerequisite. In the conducted experiment, UHPC was poured into two distinct mold types: one that incorporated a 3mm silicone sheet mounted on the fabricated PCM mold(Panel A), and the other devoid of the silicone sheet(Panel B). The experimental outcomes revealed that Panel A possessed a thickness of 3.793mm, while Panel B exhibited a thickness of 5.72mm. This suggests that the mold lacking the silicone sheet(Panel B) was more susceptible to the thermal effects of hydration. These investigations furnish invaluable fundamental data for the manufacturing of ultra-high strength irregular panels and PCM molds. They contribute substantially to the enrichment of comprehension and application of these materials within the realm of construction.

  • Free-form buildings have a curved shape and are composed of geometric shapes, which require high precision. Therefore, this study proposed a new extrusion method, a piston method, that improves the precision of FCP by automatically extruding a predetermined amount of concrete by improving the aforementioned limitations. The technology to extrude a predetermined amount of concrete by applying pistons is expected to shorten construction period and increase economic efficiency by improving the precision and productivity of free-form panels.

  • New technologies using a CNC machine to reduce the production cost of free-form buildings are being developed. To produce free-form members with such technologies, a vast free form building should be first divided into multiple panels that can be produced. Considering the curved surface of free-form buildings, the shape and size of divided freeform panels vary, which will lead to a great deal of errors. Currently, the engineers and designers complete the panelizing work through trials and errors even in large-scale projects, which results in increased construction duration and cost. Thus, it is necessary to develop a freeform panelizing technology to maximize the economic effects of free-form concrete member production technology. The purpose of the study is to analyze influence factors on panelizing of free-form buildings, which is a preceding research for development of a panelizing technology. The influence factors drawn will provide a core basis for development of panelizing technologies for free-form buildings.

  • The production technologies of free-form concrete panels are emerging to satisfy the need of modern complex shaped in architectural design. This study aims for introducing and improvising the innovative technique called Rod type mold that overcomes the difficulties in some extent by enabling the mold to be used many times, making the shape of the mold adjustable in a flexible way and describing its production process to provide the alternative solution for the construction of free-form mold with considering the features including reusability and optimization cost across its production process. In this study, the freeform concrete panel shape was designed and experiment was done using computerized numeric control machine and rod type mold. The problems appeared on achieving desired shape while operating on rod type mold. The process of identifying all the root causes and contributing causes that may have generated an undesirable condition were done. Consequently, the conical or semicircular shaped was proposed for the end of Numerical control rod and replaced it with the existing flat shaped end to avoid the detachable problem and to improve rod type mold performance.

  • New technologies using a CNC machine are being developed to reduce the production cost of free-form buildings. For production of free-form members using such technologies, vast free-form buildings should be first split into multiple panels that are productible. Taking into consideration of the curved surface of free-form members, the segmented free-form panels may vary in shape and size, which may cause a lot of errors. In addition, it is time-consuming for the work. However, the current panelizing work is completed with the trials and errors of engineers and architectural designers even in large-scale projects, which results in increased construction duration and cost. Thus, it is necessary to develop a technology for panelizing free-form panels so as to maximize the economic feasibility of production technologies for free-form concrete members. The study intends to develeop automatic panelizing algorithms of free-form buildings considering the curved surface and size of free-form panels and the production conditions. The developed algorithms will be useful in applying the production technologies of free-form buildings using CNC machine and reducing the cost.

  • Thanks to the latest developments in digital architectural technologies, free-form designs that maximize the creativity of architects have rapidly increased. However, there are a lot of difficulties in forming various free-form curved surfaces. In panelizing to produce free forms, the methods of mesh, developable surface, tessellation and subdivision are applied. The process of applying such panelizing methods when producing free-form panels is complex, time-consuming and requires a vast amount of manpower when extracting production data. Therefore, algorithms are needed to quickly and systematically extract production data that are needed for panel production after a free-form building is designed. In this respect, the purpose of this study is to propose mathematical algorithms for the automatic generation of production data of free-form panels in consideration of the building model, performance of production equipment and pattern information. To accomplish this, mathematical algorithms were suggested upon panelizing, and production data for a CNC machine were extracted by mapping as free-form curved surfaces. The study's findings may contribute to improved productivity and reduced cost by realizing the automatic generation of data for production of free-form concrete panels.

  • Demand on free-form buildings is gradually increasing, yet owing to the difficulty of production-installation work, several problems occur in the construction phase upon construction of a building, including the increased cost and construction duration, and reduced constructibility. To solve these problems, a techonology to produce FCP using a CNC(Computerized Numeric Control) machine is developed. The technology is that the information of designed free-form buildings to the CNC machine is transferred, and the transferred information is used for RTM(Rod-Type Mold, the mold shaped by back-up rods) and PCM(Phase Change Material) shaping, and the shaped RTM and PCM have the role of molds to produce FCP. Construction duration and project cost are limited in building sites, so the efficiency of processes like production-installation of FCP for application of the technology is significant. Since it is almost impossible to change the production-installation process at the construction phase when they are established, process should be deliberately decided. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to propose a production-installation simulation model of free-form concrete panels, in aspect of PCM. This paper is establishing the process for production-installation of FCP, estimating time required by each construction type and proposing a time simulation model that changes according to various constraints based on the analyses. With the time simulation model, it will be possible to build a cost model and to review the optimal construction duration and project cost.

  • Appearance finish is important for amorphous buildings to maximize amorphousness, and GFRC, glass, and metal are mostly used as exterior materials for amorphous buildings currently applied. However, the existing exterior materials showed limitations in amorphous expression, texture, and color expression. In this study, a 3D stereoscopic panel mold was manufactured using the FDM method, one of the 3D printing technologies, and 3D stereoscopic panel production was reviewed using Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), which has excellent physical and mechanical performance and expression. In order to overcome the limitations of unstructured expression, a UHPC 3D stereoscopic panel using the FDM method, one of the 3D printing technologies, was manufactured. Unlike steel molds, FRP molds, and EPS molds, the FDM method can be applied to various materials, and complex shapes are implemented. If it is used using recyclable materials as well as PLA filaments used in the FDM method, it will overcome the limitations of amorphous expression and activate the production of 3D stereoscopic panels that have secured eco-friendliness.
