Improved Control Strategy for T-type Isolated DC/DC Converters

  • T-type isolated DC/DC converters have recently attracted attention due to their numerous advantages, including few components, low cost, and symmetrical operation of transformers. This study proposes an improved control strategy for increasing the efficiency of T-type isolated DC/DC converters. Under the proposed strategy, the primary circulating current flows through the auxiliary switches (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors) instead of their body diodes in free-wheeling periods. Such feature can reduce conduction losses, thereby improving the efficiency of T-type isolated DC/DC converters. The operation principles and performances of T-type isolated DC/DC converters under the proposed control strategy are analyzed in detail and verified through the simulation and experimental results.

  • The basic design structure of RC-GCTs (Reserve-Conducting Gate-Commutated Thyristors) is firstly given in this paper. The bulk of wafer is punch-through (PT) type with high resistivity and narrow N-base width. The photo-mask was designed upon the turn-off characteristics of GCT and solution of separation between GCT and diode part. The center part of Si wafer is free-wheeling diode (FWD) and outer is GCT part which has 240 fingers totally. The switching performance of GCT was investigated by Dessis of ISE. The basic manufacture process of 2500V-4500V RC-GCTs was given in this work. Additionally, the local carrier lifetime control by 5Mev proton irradiation was adopted so as to not only to have the softness of reverse recovering for FWD but for reduction of turn-off losses of GCT as well.

진공 스위치를 이용한 Crowbar 시스템의 개발 (Development of the Crowbar System Using a Vacuum Switch)

  • Crowbar system is usually applied to a pulsed power system in which a capacitor bank is discharged into a load. This provides a free wheeling path for the load current and prevents the capacitor from recharging due to a reverse voltage. Usually diodes have been used as a crowbar switch, but it is not a practical system because the cost of the diodes goes up enormously with increasing the system voltage and current. This paper presents a novel protection scheme of a charging and discharging system of a 300 kJ capacitor bank using a low-cost crowbar system which consists of a crowbar switch and resistors. Triggered vacuum switch(TVS) was used for a crowbar switch, and Rogowski coil was used to determine a trigger time of TVS. When this crowbar system is applied to our pulsed power system which consists of capacitor bank($123muF$), inductor() for forming a pulse, load resistor$(100 m\Omega)$, and a closing switch, instantaneous reversal voltage of capacitor bank could be limited less than 1.8 ㎸ until capacitor bank was charred to 17 ㎸.

New Modeling of Switching Devices Considering Power Loss in Electromagnetic Transients Program Simulation

  • This paper presents the modeling of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) in electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) simulation for the reliable calculation of switching and conduction losses. The conventional approach considering the physical property of switching devices requires many attribute parameters and large computation efforts. In contrast, the proposed method uses the curve fitting and interpolation techniques based on typical switching waveforms and a user-defined component with variable resistances to capture the dynamic characteristics of IGBTs. Therefore, the simulation time can be efficiently reduced without losing the accuracy while avoiding the extremely small time step, which is required in simulation by the conventional method. The EMTP based simulation includes turn-on and turn-off transients of IGBT, saturation state, forward voltage of free-wheeling diode, and reverse recovery characteristics, etc. The effectiveness of proposed modeling for the EMTP simulation is verified by the comparison with experimental results obtained from practical implementation in hardware.

  • Recently, SRMs are used in automobiles for power assistant steering, accessory motion control and traction drives. Especially in the motion control and traction drives, safety and efficiency are of paramount important. The paper describes the essential elements, faced in designing and constructing drive circuits for a switched reluctance motor for automobiles. These converters will be referred to as energy efficient C-dump converter and modified C-dump converter Energy efficient C-dump converter topology eliminate all the disadvantages of the C-dump converter without sacrificing its attractive features, and also provide some additional advantages that have lower number of power devices, full regenerative capability, free-wheeling in chopping or PWM mode, simple control strategy, and faster demagnetization during commutation. The experiments are peformed to verify the capability of proposed control method on 6/4 salient type SRM.

다분할 디밍구조를 갖는 LED BLU 구동회로에 관한 연구 (Study on the LED BLU Driving Circuit with a Local-dimming Structure)

  • This paper presents an LED BLU driving circuit with a local-dimming structure. The efficiency of the proposed LED driver has been improved by parallel driving 8 serial-connected LED arrays. It employed the soft-switching boost converter topology to reduce the switching power loss of the hard switching boost converter. Soft- and hard-switching converters have the same structure except that the free-wheeling diode in the hard-switching converter is replaced with the n-channel MOSFET in the soft-switching one. The proposed boost converter was compared with the hard switching converter. The soft-switching converter reveals superior ripple and efficiency. A smaller inductance can be used for the soft-switching converter contrasting to the hard-switching one. We also studied on an over-voltage protection circuit of the output of the driver at the no load condition. The protection circuit was applied to the proposed driver, and its operation was confirmed by experiment. Using a local-dimming technique, power consumption of LCD BLUs can be reduced as low as possible according to the brightness of its image.

  • 영전압 영전류 스위칭 3레벨 DC/DC 컨버터를 제안한다. 이 컨버터는 높은 순환 에너지, 정류다이오드들의 제한적인 기생순환, 그리고 내부 스위치에 의한 제한된 영전암 스위칭 부하뜰 갖는 일반적인 영전압 영전류 스위칭 3레벨 DC/DC 컨버터 약점을 극복한다. 본 논문에서 제안된 컨버터는 외부스위치가 영전압 스위칭을 이룰 수 있도록 하고 1차 측에 플라잉 커패시터로 위상전이 제어하도록 되었다. 또 컨버터는 내부 스위치플이 영전류 스위칭을 이루는 구간동안 l차 측에 에너지 회생 스너버에 의해 리셋 하는 보조회로를 갖는다. 제안된 컨버터들은 6kW, 30kHz 의 실험 장치를 제작하였고 해석하였다.

SVM를 적용한 매트릭스 컨버터의 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of Matrix Converter Based on Space Vector Modulation)

  • 매트릭스 컨버터는 VS떼 비하여 장수명, 입력역률 직접제어 및 에너지 회생 등의 장점을 갖고 있으나, 제어의 복잡성, ride-through 대책 및 낮은 전압이용률 등은 상용화를 위해 해결해야 할 난제이다. 본 논문에서는 SVM를 적용한 매트릭스 컨버터의 설계 및 구현방법을 제안한다. 입력 고조파를 저감시키기 위한 입력필터와 입출력의 과전압 방지와 free-wheeling을 위한 클램프 회로의 설계기법을 제시하고, 고속 DSP와 CPLD를 사용하여 공간벡터 제어 및 4 단계 전류(commutation) 제어를 구현하며, 매트릭스 컨버터의 양방향 스위치 구동을 위한 전용의 전원회로를 설계하여, 최적 구조의 전력회로를 제안한다. 그리고 구현된 매트릭스 컨버터를 유도전동기에 적용하여 성공적인 운전 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • 브러시리스 직류 전동기(Brushless U Motor : BLDCM)는 기존의 직류 전동기의 단점인 브러시를 제거한 것으로 제어가 간단하면서도 넓은 범위에서 속도 제어가 가능하고 효율이 높으며 경제적으로 제어기 제작이 가능하여 산업용 뿐 아니라 가전에까지 널리 사용된다. 그러나 BLDCM을 구동하는데 필수적인 센서는 제품 가격을 증가시킬 뿐만 아니라 운전 환경이 열악한 곳에서는 동작 오류를 발생하는 원인이 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 BLDCM의 센서리스 구동에서 정상상태 운전뿐만 아니라 안정된 초기 구동에 관한 연구를 수행한다. 정상상태 운전은 측정된 역기전력을 이용하여 회전자의 위치를 결정함으로써 이루어지며, 초기 구동을 개선하기 위해 환류 다이오드로부터 측정된 전류 신호를 이용하여 초기 구동을 하게 된다. 이것은 실험을 통해 타당성을 확인하였다.

Fast Regulation Method for Commutation Shifts for Sensorless Brushless DC Motors

  • Sensorless brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive systems are often subjected to inaccurate commutation signals and can produce high current peaks and conduction consumption. To achieve accurate commutation, a fast commutation shift regulation method for sensorless BLDC motor drive systems considering the influence of the inductance freewheeling process is presented to compensate inaccurate commutation signals. The regulation method is effective in both steady speed and variable speed operations. In the proposed method, the commutation error is gained from the line-voltage difference integral in a 60 electrical-degree conduction period and the outgoing phase current before commutation. In addition, the detection precision of the commutation error is improved due to the consideration of the freewheeling period. The commutation error is directly obtained, which avoids successive optimization and accelerates the convergence rate of the proposed method. Moreover, the commutation error features a positive or negative sign, which can be utilized as an indicator of advanced or delayed commutation. Finally, experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. The results obtained show that the proposed method can accurately regulate commutation signals.
