  • A Low cost and variable speed brushless motor drive system with single switch per phase is presented. The motor drive is realized with a novel two-phase flux-reversal-free switched reluctance motor and a split AC two switch converter. The strategy of the controller and the converter for its realization are described. Comparisons between a split AC converter, asymmetric converter, split DC converter, single controllable switch converter, and N+1 converter are performed for its device rating, cost, switching losses and conduction losses, and converter efficiency. The split AC converter is analyzed and simulated to verify the characteristics of the converter circuitry and control feasibility and the simulation results are presented. The efficiency with various loads is numerically estimated and experimentally compared from viewpoint of subsystem and system in details. The focus of this paper is to compare the presented motor drive system to the asymmetric converter system throughout experiments and demonstrate single switch per phase converter having comparable efficiency as the asymmetric converter system.

  • A nonparametric test for the parallelisim of k regression lines against ordered alternatives is proposed. The test statistic is weighted Jonckheere-type statistic applied to slope estimators obtained from each lines. The distribution of the proposed test statistic is asymptotically distribution-free. From the viewpoint of efficiencies, the proposed test desirable properties and is more efficient than the other nonparametric tests.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) video technologies are becoming increasingly popular, as it can provide users with high quality and immersive experiences. However, color inconsistency between the camera views is an urgent problem to be solved in multi-view imaging. In this paper, a perception-based color correction method for multi-view images is proposed. In the proposed method, human visual sensitivity (VS) and visual attention (VA) models are incorporated into the correction process. Firstly, the VS property is used to reduce the computational complexity by removing these visual insensitive regions. Secondly, the VA property is used to improve the perceptual quality of local VA regions by performing VA-dependent color correction. Experimental results show that compared with other color correction methods, the proposed method can greatly promote the perceptual quality of local VA regions greatly and reduce the computational complexity, and obtain higher coding performance.

  • Content-based image retrieval has been the most important technique for managing huge amount of images. The fundamental yet highly challenging problem in this field is how to measure the content-level similarity based on the low-level image features. The primary difficulties lie in the great variance within images, e.g. background, illumination, viewpoint and pose. Intuitively, an ideal similarity measure should be able to adapt the data distribution, discover and highlight the content-level information, and be robust to those variances. Motivated by these observations, we in this paper propose a probabilistic similarity learning approach. We first model the distribution of low-level image features and derive the free energy kernel (FEK), i.e., similarity measure, based on the distribution. Then, we propose a learning approach for the derived kernel, under the criterion that the kernel outputs high similarity for those images sharing the same class labels and output low similarity for those without the same label. The advantages of the proposed approach, in comparison with previous approaches, are threefold. (1) With the ability inherited from probabilistic models, the similarity measure can well adapt to data distribution. (2) Benefitting from the content-level hidden variables within the probabilistic models, the similarity measure is able to capture content-level cues. (3) It fully exploits class label in the supervised learning procedure. The proposed approach is extensively evaluated on two well-known databases. It achieves highly competitive performance on most experiments, which validates its advantages.

  • Multi-view images, which are widely used for providing free-viewpoint services, can enhance the quality of synthetic views when the number of views increases. However, there needs an efficient representation method because of the tremendous amount of data. In this paper, we propose a method for generating point cloud data for the efficient representation of multi-view color and depth images. The proposed method conducts sequential reconstruction of point clouds at each viewpoint as a method of deleting duplicate data. A 3D point of a point cloud is projected to a frame to be reconstructed, and the color and depth of the 3D point is compared with the pixel where it is projected. When the 3D point and the pixel are similar enough, then the pixel is not used for generating a 3D point. In this way, we can reduce the number of reconstructed 3D points. Experimental results show that the propose method generates a point cloud which can generate multi-view images while minimizing the number of 3D points.

  • The Korean government has tried to introduce pipeline natural gas from Russia, instead of liquefied natural gas from Middle East Asia since 1990s. While this energy cooperation in North East Asia has been discussed in real politics and academic societies, the previous studies have shown the limits on policy implication because they just suggest necessity and possess the problems of weak theoretical frameworks. Therefore, this study tries to analyze the motivations, conditions, and stages for energy cooperation in this region from the viewpoint of economic integration theory. As a result of analysis, these countries in North East Asia have only one motivation, namely economic interest. On the contrary, they have several conditions including real benefit, complementation in economic structures, and convergence in policy goals. In conclusion, this study suggests that low level cooperation such as preferential trade agreement in the field of natural gas is possible and necessary in North East Asia.

  • As a result of the development of information and communication technology and the negative phenomenon of using smart devices including smart phones, many people are stressed. In this paper, we examine the effect of independent variables(mobile use ability, technical limit, speed of change, popularity) and control variables(manual service) on technostresses, which is derived from previous studies conducted from the negative viewpoint of existing information technology. For empirical analysis, empirical data were collected from a total of 206 individuals, and hypothesis tests were conducted using AMOS 22.0. In addition, by the qualitative research, we have examined smartphone usage and the technostress of smartphone usage. Focus group interviews were conducted with 24 ordinary people who purchased and used smartphones in order to verify the user's response to the smartphone user manual service.

  • Fluid transport is a key issue in the development of microfluidic systems. Recently, Myong (2014) has proposed a new concept for droplet transport without external power sources, and numerically validated the results for a hypothetical 2D shape, initially having a hemicylindrical droplet shape. Myong and Kwon (2015) have also examined the transport mechanism for an actual water droplet, initially having a 3D hemispherical shape, on a horizontal hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface, based on the numerical results of the time evolution of the droplet shape, as well as the total kinetic, gravitational, pressure and surface free energies inside the droplet. In this study, a 3D numerical analysis of an initially spherical droplet is carried out to establish a new concept for droplet transport. Further, the transport mechanism of an actual water droplet is examined in detail from the viewpoint of the capillarity force imbalance through the numerical results of droplet shape and various energies inside the droplet.

  • We studied the variety and affinity between the successive words in the text document A number of groups were defined by the frequency of a following word in the whole text (corpus). In the previous studies, the Zipf's power law was explained by Chinese restaurant process and hub node was searched after by examining the edge number profile in scale free network. We have observed both a power law and a hub profile at the same time by studying the conditional frequency and degeneracy of a group. A symmetry between the affinity and the variety between words were found during the data analysis. And this phenomenon can be explained within a viewpoint of "exploitation and exploration." We also remark on a small symmetry breaking phenomenon in TIPSTER data.

  • Film flows applied to shell-and-tube heat exchangers in various industrial fields have been studied for a long time. One boundary of the film flow interfaces with a fixed wall, and the other boundary interfaces with a gaseous region. Thus, the flows become so unstable that wavy behaviors are generated on free surfaces as the film Reynolds number increases. First, high-amplitude solitary waves are detected in a low Reynolds number laminar region; then, the waves transit to a low-amplitude, high frequency ripple in a turbulent region. Film thickness is the most significant factor governing heat transfer. Since the wave accompanied in the film flow results in temporal and spatial variations in film thickness, it can be of importance for numerically predicting the film's wavy behavior. In this study, various turbulent models are applied for predicting low-amplitude ripple flows in turbulent regions. The results are compared with existing experimental results, and finally, the applied turbulent models are appraised in from the viewpoint of wavy behaviors.
