The characteristics and good corrosion resistance at room and elevated temperatures led to increasing application of Ti-alloys such as aircraft, jet engine, turbine wheels. In forging of Ti-alloy at high temperature, die chilling and die speed should be carefully controlled because the flow stress of Ti-alloy is sensitive to temperature, strain and strain-rate. In this study, the forging of turbine disk was numerically simulated by the finite element method for hot-die forging process and isothermal forging process, respectively. The effects of the temperature changes, the die speed and the friction factor were examined. Also, local variation of process parameters, such as temperature, strain and strain-rate were traced during the simulation. It was shown that the isothermal forging with low friction condition produced defect-free disk under low forging load. Consequently, the simulational information will help industrial workers develope the forging of Ti-alloys including 'preform design' and 'processing condition design'. It is also expected that the simulation method can be used in CAE of near net-shape forging.
In the present research, an attempt is made to obtain a semi analytical solution for both nonlinear natural frequency and forced vibration of embedded functionally graded double layered nanoplates with all edges simply supported based on nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory. The interaction of van der Waals forces between adjacent layers is included. For modeling surrounding elastic medium, the nonlinear Winkler-Pasternak foundation model is employed. The governing partial differential equations have been derived based on the Mindlin plate theory utilizing the von Karman strain-displacement relations. Subsequently, using the Galerkin method, the governing equations sets are reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The semi analytical solution of the nonlinear natural frequencies using the homotopy analysis method and the exact solution of the nonlinear forced vibration through the Harmonic Balance method are then established. The results show that the length scale parameters give nonlinearity of the hardening type in frequency response curve and the increase in material length scale parameter causes to increase in maximum response amplitude, whereas the increase in nonlocal parameter causes to decrease in maximum response amplitude. Increasing the material length scale parameter increases the width of unstable region in the frequency response curve.

Using the tensor elastic Green functions an exact integral equation is formulated for two anisotropic precipitates embedded in an infinite anisotropic matrix; the matrix is subjected to an applied strain field or the precipitates undergo a stress-free transformation strain. This equation is reduced to an infinite system of algebraic equations by expanding the strains in Taylor series about the two points within each precipitate, and an approximation of the strain distributions within the two spherical precipitates is obtained by truncating the higher order terms. Since the present method requires no symmetry conditio between the two shperical precipitates, it is possible to obtain the strain distribution within the precipitates when the elastic constants and/or the sizes of the precipitates are different each other. The strains are expanded about arbitrary points, giving more accurate distributions of the strains than those presented elsewhere. The present method can be directly estended to the case of more than two spherical precipitates.
bacterium having high abilities to solubilize in-organic phosphate was isolated from cultivated soils. The strain was identified as Aeromonas hydrophila DA33, based on the physiological and biochemical properties. The optimum temperature and initial pH to solubilize insoluble phosphate in sucrose minimal medium were 3$0^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.0, respectively. In these conditions, phosphate-solubilizing activities of the strain against two types of insoluble phosphate were quantitatively determined. When glucose was used for carborn source, the strain had a marked mineral phospahte solubilizing activity. Inorganic phospahte solubilization was directly related to the pH drop by the strain. Analysis of the culture medium confirmed the production of gluconic acid as the main organic acid released by Aeromonas hydrophila DA33.
Ocular lesions induced in 40 specific-pathogen-free Marek's disease (MD) resistant chicks by inoculation at 1 day of age with very virulent strain of Marek's disease virus (WV) were pathologically examined. Grossly,24/40 (60%) chicks had white gel-like materials in the vitreous body, whereas thickening and discoloration of iris (gray eye) were not observed. Microscopically, characteristic ocular MD lesions were observed in choroid (27/40), ciliary (30/40) and iris (23/40) in which small focal inflammatory to diffuse neoplastic Iymphoid cells were infiltrated. Five out of 40 MDV-inoculated birds revealed necrotizing Iymphomas in choroid. These lesions consisted of necrotic and degenerating Iymphoblasts accompanied by intranuclear inclusion body. There was retinal atrophy and necrosis with inclusion body detected in necrotic ganglion, inner or outer nuclear and infiltrated Iymphoblast cells. Conjunctiva showed lymphoid cell infiltration in 29/40 chicks inoculated with MDV, Vitreous body exhibited mild to severe exudation of eosinophilic proteinaceous material in 24/40 chicks. These lesions were associated with Iymphoid cell infutration, edema and fibrosis of choroid. Pecten (7/40) and optic nerve (13/40) were infiltrated usually mildly with Iymphoid cells. From these results, very virulent strain, Md/5 of MDV caused high incidence of ocular lesions in MD resistant chicks. In addition, Md/5 induced exudation of proteinaceous material into the vitreous body and fibrosis of choroid. Necrotizing ocular Iymphoma lesions in choroid is the first report in the MD literature.
In this study, we wanted to determine if the respirotropic JMK strain of infectious bronchitis virus(IBV), which has a spike glycoprotein gene that is 99% similar to the nephropathogenic Gray strain of IBV, could adapt and cause lesions in the kidney following intracloacal passage in chickens. Two day old specific pathogen free(SPF) cchickens were infected with Gray and JMK strains by the intraocular and cloacal route. Several tissue samples were collected at various times. Viruses were recovered from more tissues and earlier in the infection from chickens infected cloacally than chickens infected intraocularly. Virus was isolated from the kidney of chickens infected with Gray by the intraocular route and JMK by the intracloacal route, but not from chicken given JMK the intraocular route. Histopathologically, interstitial nephritis was observed in Gray infected chickens. However, viral RNA or antigen were not detected in the kidney by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. We further passaged the JMK strain ten times in two day old SPF chickens using cloacal inoculation. We examined the virus titer and histopathological change in the kidney at each passage level. The amount of virus recovered from the kidney was stable throughout this serial passage and the passaged virus did not caused renal damage. Further, virus could not be isolated from the kidney when chickens were infected with the passaged virus by the intraocular route. We conclude that the JMK strain has a strict upper respiratory tract tropism since cloacal passage did not produce nephrotropism or nephropathogenicity.
In this study, the effect of the hole spacing and the detonation delay time in the long hole blasting of two free surface rock mass on the variation of the principal strains in the vicinity of blasting holes is investigated by use of the finite element program, Visual FEA. The cross section perpendicular to blasting holes is modelled and the maximum principal strains at some major points in the cracking zone are examined. As a result, it was found that the maximum principal strain in the cracking zone becomes larger in the long hole blasting with the narrower hole spacing and the longer detonation delay time. The maximum principal strain was affected by the detonation position in charge hole.
This paper analyzes nonlinear free vibration of the circular nano-tubes made of functionally graded materials in the framework of nonlocal strain gradient theory in conjunction with a refined higher order shear deformation beam model. The effective material properties of the tube related to the change of temperature are assumed to vary along the radius of tube based on the power law. The refined beam model is introduced which not only contains transverse shear deformation but also satisfies the stress boundary conditions where shear stress cancels each other out on the inner and outer surfaces. Moreover, it can degenerate the Euler beam model, the Timoshenko beam model and the Reddy beam model. By incorporating this model with Hamilton's principle, the nonlinear vibration equations are established. The equations, including a material length scale parameter as well as a nonlocal parameter, can describe the size-dependent in linear and nonlinear vibration of FGM nanotubes. Analytical solution is obtained by using a two-steps perturbation method. Several comparisons are performed to validate the present analysis. Eventually, the effects of various physical parameters on nonlinear and linear natural frequencies of FGM nanotubes are analyzed, such as inner radius, temperature, nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, scale parameter ratio, slenderness ratio, volume indexes, different beam models.
A restricted facultatively methanol-oxidizing bacterium, Methylovorus sp. strain SS1, was isolate dfrom soil samples from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, through methanol-enrichment culture technique. The isolate was nonmotile Gram-negative rod and did not have complex internal membrane system. The colonies were small, pale-yellow, and raised convex with entire margin. The cell did not produce any spores and capsular materials. The cell was obligately aerobic and exhibited catalase, but no oxidase, activity. Plasmid, carotenoid pigment, and poly-.betha.-hydroxybutyric acid were not found. The guanine plus cytosine content of the DNA was 55%. The isolate was found to grow only on methanol methylamine, or glucose. Growth factors were not required. Cells growing on methanol was found to produce extracellular polysaccharides containing glucose, lactose, and fructose. Growth was optimal (t$_{d}$= 1.7) with 0.5%(v/v) methanol at 40.deg.C and pH 6.5. No Growth was observed at over 60.deg.C. Cell-free extracts of the methanol grown cells exhibited the phenazine methosulfate-linked methanol dehydrogenase activity Methanol was found to be assimilate dthrough the ribulose monophosphate pathway.y.
An accurate and highly efficient inverse element labelled iPCB is developed based on the inverse finite element method (iFEM) for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures (such as arch bridges) utilizing onboard strain data. This inverse problem, named shape sensing, is vital for the design of smart structures and structural health monitoring (SHM) procedures. The iPCB formulation is defined based on a least-squares variational principle that employs curved Timoshenko beam theory as its baseline. The accurate strain-displacement relationship considering tension-bending coupling is used to establish theoretical and measured section strains. The displacement fields of the isoparametric element iPCB are interpolated utilizing nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) basis functions, enabling exact geometric modelling even with a very coarse mesh density. The present formulation is completely free from membrane and shear locking. Numerical validation examples for different curved structures subjected to different loading conditions have been performed and have demonstrated the excellent prediction capability of iPCBs. The present formulation has also been shown to be practical and robust since relatively accurate predictions can be obtained even omitting the shear deformation contributions and considering polluted strain measures. The current element offers a promising tool for real-time shape estimation of plane-curved structures.
